Second Test, Colombo, day two
Scorecard
The runs continued to flow on day two of the second Test between Sri Lanka and India in Colombo, where India closed on 95 without loss in reply to Sri Lanka's impressive 642 for four declared.
The omens were not good for the tourists after Kumar Sangakkara reached his seventh Test double-century, something which to date has never preceded a Sri Lankan defeat.
Having started the day on 130, he made his way to 219, reaching his double-century in 304 balls before he was caught by Rahul Dravid off the bowling of Virender Sehwag, ending a partnership worth 193 with Mahela Jayawardene.
Jayawardene went on to reach his 28th Test century, making 174 in 244 balls and it was his dismissal, caught by Suresh Raina off Harbhajan Singh, which prompted the declaration, with Thilan Samaraweera unbeaten on 76 at the other end.
He had become the third centurion of the innings after Tharanga Paranavitana's day one innings of 100.
The four frontline Indian bowlers all conceded more than 100 runs with Ishant Sharma, Pragyan Ojha, Harbhajan and Sehwag taking a wicket apiece.
Sehwag then showed that he was prepared to take the fight to Sri Lanka with an innings of 64 in 63 balls, including 12 fours as India scored at more than five runs per over in reply.
Dammika Prasad's opening three overs disappeared for 27 and he was swiftly taken out of the attack and while Angelo Mathews and Suraj Randiv provided more control, Dilhara Fernando (seven overs for 31) and Ajantha Mendis (one over for nine) were also expensive).
Murali Vijay was unbeaten on 22 from 50 balls when stumps were drawn.
Sri Lanka lead the three-match series 1-0 following a comprehensive ten-wicket win in Galle.
