West Indies Women 235-6 (Jack 81, Lavine 49) beat
England Women 195 (Edwards 58, Nation 3-22) by 40 runs
First One-Day International, Saint Kitts
The West Indies Women continued their winning run by beating world champions England Women by 40 runs in the opening One-Day International in Saint Kitts.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, the home side posted 235 for six before bowling England out for 195.
Cordel Jack top scored for the West Indies with 81 and Pamela Lavine fell one short of a half-century but their score proved to be enough.
Charlotte Edwards, opening the batting alongside Ebony Rainford-Brent, made 58 and Lydia Greenway hit 41 but three wickets apiece from Chedean Nation and Lavine ensured that the West Indies were celebrating.
England are missing two of their star players in Sarah and Claire Taylor, but there were no excuses from captain Edwards or coach Mark Lane after the match.
"Congratulations should go to the West Indian team for playing well today in front of their home crowd," Edwards said. "They outplayed us and deserved to win but we'll come back fighting tomorrow."
Lane added: "I'm bitterly disappointed with the result today. We were outplayed in all three disciplines and in all honesty we just weren't good enough. We need to show plenty of character tomorrow, we're a great team so we'll dust ourselves down and I'm confident that we'll perform far better tomorrow and play at the level we know are capable of."
