Andrew Flintoff has turned down the offer of an incremental contract from the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and newspaper reports in the UK have claimed that he is to undertake some coaching in the United Arab Emirates while he recovers from a knee operation.
A statement from his representatives explained:
“Andrew Flintoff has rejected the offer of an incremental contract from the England and Wales Cricket Board in an attempt to expand his cricketing experience and become the best one-day player in the world.
“The 31-year-old all-rounder remains committed to playing one-day and Twenty20 cricket for both England and Lancashire, but wants to expand his cricketing education by playing around the world.”
He already has a $1.55 million contract with Indian Premier League side the Chennai Super Kings and reports have suggested that he could feature in tournaments in South Africa, Australia and even the West Indies.
A statement from Lancashire CCC, with whom he also holds a contract to play county cricket, said:
"Following Andrew Flintoff’s decision today not to accept the offer of an incremental contract with the England and Wales Cricket Board, LCCC Chief Executive Jim Cumbes says; 'Lancashire, as we have been throughout his entire career, are fully supportive of Fred’s ambitions and we hope to see him play a leading role for us in our one day team’s for years to come.'
“To that end, we are currently in talks with Fred and his Management team about a new contract which will help support his goals and the ambitions of Lancashire.”
Flintoff is currently recuperating after knee surgery and is not expected to be fit enough to play any cricket until 2010.
