West Indies Women 182-5 (Taylor 108no) beat
South Africa Women 181-7 (Brits 48) by five wickets
First One-Day International, Paarl
Opening bat Stafanie Taylor guided the West Indies Women to an impressive five-wicket win over South Africa Women in the first One-Day International in Paarl.
Taylor scored an unbeaten 108 in 117 balls, registering her maiden ODI century as her team reached their target of 182 to win having earlier restricted the home side to 181 for seven.
Taylor was one of four bowlers to pick up a wicket, along with Pamela Lavine, Cordel Jack and Chedean Nation as three South Africans, debutant Kirstie Thomson, Trisha Chetty and Alicai Smith, were run out before Cri-Zelda Brits top scored with 48.
Taylor then marshalled her side's run chase expertly, hitting 11 fours and two sixes, dominating an opening stand worth 56 with Amanda Samaroo (16) and although captain Sunette Loubser grabbed a couple of wickets and there were also two for Smith, they could not remove Taylor and that enabled the West Indies to get home with some nine overs to spare,
"We let ourselves down in the field today, we praise ourselves on our fielding but today our minds were not there," Loubser told Cricket South Africa's website (www.cricket.co.za).
"We missed a lot of run-out opportunities and that could have been the difference between winning and losing.
“We always felt that 180 was a good total on this wicket but we let ourselves down when it came to defending the total. We bowled in all of Stafanie’s good areas and she capitalised hard on that,” she added.
The second of five matches is in Cape Town on Sunday 18th October.
