LV County Championship Division One, day three of four
Durham already look to have done enough to ensure they will not be beaten this season. They waited for Shivnarine Chanderpaul to reach 201 before declaring their first innings on 634 for eight after Michael di Venuto and Dale Benkenstein had also scored centuries. Worcestershire, all out for 356 on day two, were 41 for one at stumps.
Already-relegated Sussex showed some fight against Nottinghamshire, reducing their hosts to 236 for seven in their second innings at Trent Bridge. Samit Patel top scored with 54 as Dwayne Smith took three wickets but Nottinghamshire are well ahead having been bowled out for 328 in their first innings and they shot out Sussex for 243 yesterday.
Hampshire and Yorkshire have set up what is almost a one-innings match at Headingley. In reply to Hampshire's 351, Joe Sayers made 95, Jacques Rudolph 68 and Jonathan Bairstow 50 not out as they posted 348. Hampshire were 41 without loss in their second innings when stumps were drawn.
Lancashire finished off Warwickshire by ten wickets. Having bowled the Bears out for 148, Lancashire eventually closed their innings when they were dismissed for 389 and Gary Keedy then picked up six for 50 as Warwickshire's 244 all out left Lancashire a single-figure target, which they achieved with ease.
LV County Championship Division Two, day three of four
Northamptonshire pulled off a thumping innings and 196-run win which has distilled the battle for promotion into one between them and Essex. They saw off Leicestershire's challenge by bowling them out for 186 in their second innings, James Benning at least going down fighting by hitting 72 in 64 balls as David Lucas picked up seven for 45.
Needing to win and claim at least 19 points from their match against Derbyshire to go up, Essex declared behind on 356 for nine in reply to Derbyshire's 474. That came after Tom Westley completed his maiden first-class century, making 135 in the end. Derbyshire then reached 103 for three at stumps, Danish Kaneria giving Essex some hope with two wickets.
With Glamorgan's slim hopes of promotion finally extinguished, they set about racking up a monster score against Surrey, declaring on 702 for eight in reply to 430. Gareth Rees (154) and Mark Cosgrove (175) extended their opening stand to 315 and after a slight wobble, James Allenby (137) and Mark Wallace (139) put on 240 for the sixth wicket. Surrey showed either admirable restraint or a lack of ideas as four of their bowlers bowled the vast majority of the overs and only six were used overall. Surrey closed on 24 for one having lost Michael Brown for 17.
Gloucestershire ended their season with a big win over champions Kent. The margin of victory was an innings and 23 runs after Kent were bowled out in their second innings for 265, Sam Northeast carrying his bat for 128. Jon Lewis, Steve Kirby, Hamish Marshall, and Anthony Ireland, the replacement for James Franklin, summoned to South Africa for Champions Trophy duty, all picked up two wickets. Franklin had earlier had to retire on 104 and Steve Adshead made 114 in Gloucestershire's innings of 552 all out.
