2008 County Preview - Derbyshire

Last year Derbyshire finished in sixth place in the County Championship Division Two,which was a great improvement from finishing bottom as they had done the year before. They will want to forget their year in one day cricket, but on the whole, there was an improvement on the years before to show that the club was moving forward. Last years performances will give them heart as they definitely showed that they were a much more competitive side, having brought in some good players and it definitely showed.

The 2008 off season is no different. John Morris has been very busy since replacing Dave Houghton, and he has brought in some very interesting signings that
again should help Derbyshire improve on last year, which was definitely their best season for a few seasons.

Rikki Clarke is a brilliant signing, he will go straight in as captain of the side and will add extra quality to both the bowling and batting department. His move from Surrey shows that he has faith in Derbyshire Revolution and that he must believe that they can develop into a brilliant side in future years. Derbyshire’s batting line up will posses a greater threat than years before as Mahela Jayawardene and Chris Rogers are bolstering the Phantoms line up. T

he signing of spinner Nayan Doshi should help Derbyshire in their one day campaigns in 2008. He is statistically the best Twenty20 bowler since the start of the competition and should offer some experience to the side. Derbyshire used two promising youngsters during the season in Daniel Redfern and Tom Poynton. Should an injury arise, they have two exciting talent that will look to further their impressive 2007 starts to county cricket.

Derbyshire also have signed West Indian batsman Wavell Hinds on a Kolpak. With the retirement of Phil Weston, a slot at the top of the order was left so Hinds will replace him. Another Kolpak signing is talented youngster Dominic Telo, who moves from South Africa - hoping to fulfil international duties with England, he is definitely one to watch out for with his classy batting. Tom Lungley will look to try and regain his 2007 form as he claimed 59 first class wickets in the County Championship. He bowled brilliantly and the Phantoms will look to him to make early inroads into opposition line ups. He will be backed up by Graham Wagg who had his best season since coming back from his ban; he bowled with heart and will again look to help the Phantoms in 2008.
