The Indian Premier League (IPL) governing council has confirmed a number of details for the fifth edition of the tournament, which will begin on 4th April.

After the Kochi Tuskers Kerala's ejection from the competition, the nine remaining teams will play each other on a home and away basis as per the first three runnings of the competition, meaning the total number of matches to be played is 76.

The auction for the 2012 season will be held in January or February and each of the remaining franchises will have $US 2 million to spend on new players.

For the 2012 and 2013 seasons, each franchise will also now be able to have a maximum of 33 players in their squad and have up to 11 overseas players which is an increase by one from previously although a team may still only field four players in any one game.

Ahead of the new season, there will be a trading window open from 15th December until 20th January 2012 and another short window open following the auction.

The competition will then see the three play-off matches held in Bangalore and Chennai and the final held in Chennai on 27th May.

Kolkata Knight Riders clinched their maiden Indian Premier League title by beating reigning champions Chennai Super Kings by five wickets in a high-scoring final. An innings of 89 in 48 balls from Manvinder Bisla helped them overhaul a stiff target of 191 to win the game with two balls to spare at Chennai's home ground.
Chennai Super Kings maintained their remarkable Indian Premier League record by advancing to their fourth final in five attempts, beating Delhi Daredevils by 86 runs in the second qualifier in front of their own fans. Their convincing victory was set up by Murali Vijay's brilliant 113 in 58 balls and although Mahela Jayawardene hit 55 for the Daredevils, no other batsmen could produce an innings of substance and in reply to 222 for five, they were dismissed for just 136.
Reigning Indian Premier League champions Chennai Super Kings kept their hopes of glory alive by beating Mumbai Indians by 38 runs in the 2012 Eliminator in Bangalore. The battle to face Delhi Daredevils in the final knock-out game was won by Mahendra Singh Dhoni's team, who recovered from a terrible start to run out convincing winners.
Kolkata Knight Riders booked their place in the Indian Premier League 2012 final as they produced a strong performance to beat Delhi Daredevils by 18 runs in the qualifier in Pune. Yusuf Pathan's late blast of 40 not out helped them accelerate to a score of 162 for four and Delhi closed on 144 for eight in reply, unable to pick up the pace when it was required.
Mumbai Indians warmed up for the Indian Premier League 2012 play-offs in style, inflicting a 10-wicket defeat on Rajasthan Royals in the last league match of the season at Jaipur. Mumbai had already finished third and Rajasthan are now confirmed seventh in the points table.
Royal Challengers Bangalore shot their own chances of making the Indian Premier League 2012 play-offs, going down to Deccan Chargers by nine runs at Hyderabad. The visitors had needed to win this game to displace Chennai Super Kings from the fourth spot and instead made a dismal exit.
