Was wondering if any of you read Gilly's Cowdrey Lecture and what were your thoughts on it?

I thought it was quite an honest and insightful lecture.  He makes some good points.

If you havent read it and would like to, you can search for Gilchrist on Cricinfo and the lecture comes up as one of the links at the bottom of his page.

Yes he does make some good points and some not so good. He seems to be advocating for T20 cricket more than it deserves. cricket should not be at Olympics. At Olympics we have the pure forms of those respective games. T20 is certainly not the pinnacle of the sport and it should certainly not come at the expense of 50 over games. I still do rate the 50 over game above the T20s, for they test the skills of the players to a reasonable extent. But sadly the ICC doe snot seem to be doing enought o save the 50 over game.

I disagree.

While it is true that in terms of testing players' skill levels, the order of precedence is tests, odis and then T20s, the very nature of test cricket makes it hard to enjoy for cricket newbies.  If the global expansion of cricket is important, and it is, it is T20 that will appeal to most 'non-cricket playing' countries.

I think the message he was trying to get across was that cricket has to change in order to preserve its greatest treasure - test match cricket.  It might be too late to save ODIs already, but its not too late to save test cricket.

I, too, at first, belittled T20 as a trivial fun form of the game, but it has turned into a monster now and if it gives us the easiest way to get cricket to the olympics, then so be it.

Also, like Gilly said, it would be incorrect to assume that T20 does not test a player's skill in terms of batting, bowling or fielding.  I'm keen to know what you mean when you say ODIs test a player's skill to a reasonable level.  At what point does that reasonable level occur?  25, 30, 40 overs?

It certainly tests the skill to a greater level than the T20s. It is also evident that the gap between a quality team and an ICC associate member narrows down in T20 games. T20 is here to stay, but it should not come at the expense of ODIs.

Don't listen to enough of the Cowdrey lectures. Love the concept but only ever listened to Boyc's effort.

Don't agree that any sport should have global expansion as a priority. It's killing football.

Yes why should cricket be eying a global spot? Baseball is so widely popular wherever it is played and they follow it madly. Let cricekt remain the same.

Downloads of the lectures here (not the first three though for some reason).

You dont think baseball is trying to expand?

Cricket like all other sports is run ultimately for money.

Globalization, in the end, means more money.  This isn't the reason I'd like to see it globalized.  I'd just like to see more people playing, more teams battling it out, new rivalries etc.  Unfortunately, for the people running the sport, each new country entering the sport is viewed as a new market.  Hopefully, that doesnt blind them of the bigger picture.

Wishful thinking on my part, Sledge.  One can always hope.  ;-)
