Actually I have another 14 year old lad who was a fairly aggressive batsman when he was 10-11 years old, his stregnth being drives but he would not defend. So I taught him the defensive stuff, specially the backfoot defensive. Although he learnt this defensive stuff quickly it had a terrible effect on him - he became a totally defensive player in a matter of weeks. Over the last 3 seasons he has gone more defensive and cant attack the ball to save his life. I have tried to get his attacking shots back, I coach him, shout at him, push him hard but to no avail.

This is not what I want the younger 11 year old to do.
He hit one yesterday and today he hit the ball out of the ground. Thats quite an achievement for an 11 year old I guess. And he does this without much effort; he knows where the middle of his bat is. I have ever only hit one six in my 30 years of playing cricket!

I think the way to go with him is to teach him to be selective in his shots but not necessarily discourage him from going for the big hits. And I want him to keep his confidence which is at high at the moment. After all confidence is 90% of cricket.
This will not lose any of his natural ability but infact improve his batting skills. Picking the right shot at the right time to each individual delivery is the art to batting so in my opinion, work on his shot selection including defending the ones that need to be defended.

I too had tried to whack the leather off everything when i was a younger bloke but realised that nothing makes you improve moe than training in the nets and playing this great game, whether its with friends in the backyard, nets, street, park or grade cricket didint matter to me at all i just kept improving.

I remember myself a few years back in this situation - use to pull almost anything back of a length and back. I had to get more conventional and I lost some of my flairy self in the process so this leads me to say this, if he ought to be somehow good, he'll have to sacrifice some of his flair now and try to regain it when he gets good.

I remember a commentator, I think it's Holding, saying that when Viv Richards started to play, he use to try and hit anything and after a while he realized that it ain't always going to work. Holding said that he went and develop a solid forward defense and he was a much better player after that.

Unfortunately they have far too many 13-year olds for the team and this kid cant get in even though he is much better than most 13 year olds.

But I certainly dont want to curb his natural flair and basic instict with which he hits the ball hard, very hard and plays the shots to perfection. He just wants to hit every ball out for a boundary; thats his only problem.
