Only change something if you think it needs fixing. The only time I would say a coach should really try to change something in an action is if it's a danger to the bowler (or the batsman, for that matter, if you're bowling a lot of beamers or overstepping the crease by a long way). Not eveyone has to have an action straight out of the MCC coaching manual. Lots of very successful quickies have had unorthodox actions.

I had one in my team 5'4" 48kg in weight, bowled around 130-135k with banana outswing. He had a beautiful high arm action, but since he was so flexible he threw every possible thing in his body back and then catapulted forward on the delivery stride. He was a fearsome prospect to face on the matting wickets.

So start slowly, then try to fine tune your action. Smooth actions (see Vaas) will have longevity, unorthadox ones (like that of Andre Nel, Anrew Hall) will have more pace

Most of the advice above is good, but it also lacks the fact that you won't take wickets by just running in and bowling as fast as you can.

Try to develop a compact action and work on carrying your momentum through the crease. A good action will help you bowl as fast as someone whose bigger with a sloppier action.

The key is to be comitted and confident.

Try to concentrate more on being able to put the ball where you want.... watch the batsmen closely and look for weekness, technical or mental. Then work on them. That will get you far more wickets than pace alone

How many short guys do you see generate pace from an orthodox action?
This would mean you are bending your back as much as possible as you come into your delivery stride, reaching back as far as you can, slamming your front foot down and whipping through, putting every ounce of strength into that one explosive movement. Watch Shoaib closely (well, watch old videos since you probably won't get another chance to watch him bowl live...), he does that beautifully.

As for the run-up, it varies depending what you find comfortable but most 'slingy' bowlers tend to come in from fairly wide rather than straight in. My personal technique for generating momentum and pace is to start slow and low, so as you approach the crease you're powering upwards and accelerating, hitting full speed as you're front foot slams down. Remember though, more important than any small detail is getting a good consistant rhythm to your run up, not stuttering and being loose and relaxed

Edited by Chin Music
