He used to bowl left-arm spin. He was okay and played domestically and batted down the order. He then got a case of the 'yips' and lost his ability to bowl spin pretty much overnight. He was unable to recapture his bowling talent and instead focused on his batting. This was because of an urge to succeed at international level.

 

Overtime, after working very hard in the off-season, he managed to work his way into his domestic side based upon his batting, and not bowling skills. After several seasons of scoring successfully he was picked as a NZ test opener. He made the spot his own for several years, scoring proficiently and consistently. His talents, naturally, as a batsman were very limited. He had never succeed as a batsman before. Though with his ability to garner his mental toughness with hardwork he managed to develop a way of scoring runs uniquely, but effectively.

 

This example shows that if your head is in the right place, and you are willing to work hard, then you can achieve anything. Don't be fooled by talent, it only goes as far as you want it to.
