I'm just curious Clobber, did you take offense to wiseguy calling you 'my dear'?

Anyway, I agree with your comments about stats. They do lie sometimes and can be made to fit any argument.

I did not take offence even though it was both bizarre and patronising

The only way players are judged once they are gone, is by stats, we never saw bradman play but stats say he was the greatest, same would be the case with afridi 20 -30 years down the line when cricket would be played probably 10/10 or 5/5 the only comparison would be on stats, Infact if you take away stats the most exciting batsman I have ever seen is VIV RICHARDS, so he should be the greatest.

Dead right. Statistics, sometimes the worst of lies, not always though. How on earth would anyone believe Afridi to be a good Test Batsman. I would be the last of all.

And the same stands for Dhoni, as well. Real test is on fast tracks, with a lot of support for the bowlers.

pitches dont mean anything especially for afridi cause no matter how the pitch is he will still go out there trying to smash it

I love the jelousy of you posts when someone says something good about Afridi.

Anyway, yes, his test average is good. Destroyed Singh with those beatiful 4 6ers in a row and is now averaging at fourty, which is very good for an allrounder.

Take it easy people .... Afridi is a good test batsmen no doubt about it and there is no point on making predictions because no one knows what will happen in the future. But i think Afridi should also mature in tests because even when has 50+ overs to play a game he is slogging and takeing risks some call it entertainment some call it stupidity but I think If he doesnt slog all the time he will do better at cricket. It is definetly entartainment.. though he should mature.

If Afridi has free rein from Woolmer and Inzamam to smash the ball to all parts of the ground , irrespective of the score , then he's doing a good job.

Pakistan has plenty of responsible batsmen who can score heavily. Afridi is the dangerman who can destroy an attack within an hour or so.

Krisdy , lighten up and stop using so many colours , it's annoying. Afridi would be the 1st to say that he's not a classical batsman , but he IS effective. If he's just following orders , he's doing a grand job and he can't be critized.

I believe he's doing EXACTLY what is asked of him , or he wouldn't be in the side.

I think he's good for the game and no matter what his average ends up as , he'll send a LOT of bowlers to bed dreading the Afridi nightmares.

Fellas , the beauty of cricket is that it can be played effectively in many different ways. Afridi has his method , just as Tendulkar has his - they both have a part to play in the greatest of games.

Agreed Sledger. I can see the very fine line between different opinions. Afridi, no doubt is a very useful test player contributing well towards batting, bowling and fielding. In my previous post, it was wrongly written that "he is not a good test player", I rather intended to say that "He is not a good test batsman".

Even though he is a useful test player and sometimes his knocks, in addition to good fielding and bowling, really help Pakistan to achieve quick runs and drag the match in their favour, still he is not a Good Test Batsman. When the ball swings and bowlers extract support form the wicket, you need to have good batting tehnique to counter it.

Bottom line: Afridi is a useful test player, not always though. He is not a good test batsman.

Fair comments Shan and I hear you! I haven't seen Afridi in a situation where he has to bat to save a game. Has he the technique and patience to do that job - it's unlikely.

But I still say he's good for cricket and I admire the way he takes the bowling on. His bowling mustn't be underestimated either - he takes wickets at regular intervals , he's not a part-timer.

If he were English he might struggle to make the test side on typical English wickets , but imagine him in a one day side with Pietersen and Flintoff - now that would be incredible to see!

When Afridi comes to bat there is a roar among the crowd "boom boom Afridi" and there are certain reasons for that. He is absolutely incredible when it comes to ODIs. He thrashes the opponents and is worth watching when he is in top form. He really adds good flavour to this game of cricket.

Yes there is mate , but there's a mass exodus when he gets out! Those aren't real supporters , cricket is still a team game and he's but one small cog in the machine.
