Hi,
Any tips on how to improve my bowling speed ? I am right hand medium pace bowler and have short run up (like 10 feet or so). I realized that I bend a bit more when the ball leaves my hand, could that be slowing down the pace ? Thanks, CricStar |

Try to leave the ball with high arm action, it would provide you extra bounce also. And concentrate on your grip also, dont hold the ball too firmly and try not to place your thumb across the ball, while delivering. And mate your run up is too short to generate pace multliply it at least by three. You must be a spinner with 10 ft. run up. |

you need to have good rythm you cant just run in fast and release slow or run in slow and rip the ball through you need to have a good steady run up the action and relese and a good follow through

Also be sure to finish off your action properly. That means bringing
your arm all the way through after you release the ball, down and
across your body - as a right handed bowler your hand should pass by
your left thigh in your follow through stride.

Do push-ups. I do 70 push-ups every day. That makes your chest stronger. My coach says that when bowling the power also comes from the chest, not just the arms.

Yeah of course, do some work with your body, fast bowlers need to have atheletic build up.

I have the same problem, but i also don't use my height to full effect as well, is this causing problems with pace as well.

If you are not utilizing your height to fuller extent, it is not good. You must be bending your frong leg while bowling? Try to keep it straignt and deliver the ball with high arm action, it would be more effective, i can bet. But i don't think that this problems particularly affects bowling speed. |

I am a fast bowler, who is currently mastering leg spin. As we have a spin topic i thought we should discuss the aspects of fast bowling. Seam, swing, slower balls, you name it, we can discuss it. I would be happy to offer any advice that i have but i also have much to learn. Unfortunately, everyone seems to be a spin bowler on this forum, i would welcome some fast bowlers too. So to begin, can anyone help me with getting serious swing? |

thats easy to increase your speed. I was a pace bowler to but am a leggy now. Use your wrist for more pace and also a smooth run up. Warnester pm me for swing bowling cause I was the master of that as well.

i have spin wizard but i am looking forward to discussing on this topic too. i am 14 and my speed range to my age goes like this: 10-25mph-medium pace bowler 26-45mph-medium pace bowler 45+-fast bowler I tend to bowl between 40 and 50 mph, i need to master swing though, i know the grip almost, i could do with a bit more explanation, but what action do you need? mine is like shaun pollocks to give you an example.

I dont know my speed at the minute, but im having serious run up
problems what messes up my delivery strie and i tend to over
stretch
so my un up is about the size of a spinners at the minute

hi, im new, but here some things i feel will definately help faster bowling, as mentioned stregth and rhythm, but core body strength and lower body strength is more important, e.g. no use in having huge triceps to help you bowl fast(by core i mean back, stomach, chest shoulders) lower body i mainly mean the gluts, quads and hamstrings, but also an extremely improtant aspect is flexibility, you need to strecth all the time, make sure all the joints are working smoothly, inproving flexibility may help you improve your technique and rhythm hope this helps |

i beleive the outswinger is more lethal than the inswinger, the edge is more common. its a great delivery

yeah, the inswinger can be a lethal yorker, but if you've just bounced a batsman, and he's slightly nervous becuase of it, an outswinging yorker that starts leg stump is probably harder to play than the inswinging one

im a leggie so im no expert on swing, i always thought you could bowl it at an optimum speed, such as pollocks pace to get loads of swing, but then to watch brett lee work over kallis in the tests, and destroy my beloved SA in the odi's with all that swing i guess it is mainly to do with the wrist position and seem of the ball

The secret to bowling faster as far as your physical attributes and
training is concerned is in your lower body. Pace is originally
generated by the legs (hence why we have a run-up). The area where most
bowlers tend to lose their pace is in the core region (abs/ lower
back). Stong muscles around your hips, stomach, and lower back prevent
the dissipation of energy from the lower body and allow the power and
speed you generated from your run-up to be transferred along the
kinetic chain and into your shoulder. Of course you still need a strong
chest, shoulders and arms or else you place will be lost in these
regions.

Some people do huge run ups and then when they go to the crease the stop and inly use their shoulder, Shaoib does this somewhat and wastes too much energy with his run up. What you need to do is ryn and bowl and see what feels comfortable, just run freely and it will cme to you. Some of these guys here keep on saying..I can swing it both ways and i can do reverse and i can bowl yorkers evry ball and i can seam and cut the ball at will. No u cant, if u could you would be representing your nation, not even Lee, Mcgrath, Vaas, Harmy, Polly and any of them can do that properly. DOn't lie to yourself, go by your abilities and improve from there.

Theoretically, yes- it is possible for slingers to bowl faster (due to
muscle pre-loading, elastic energy etc.). However, these bowlers are
much more vulnerable to fatigue and injury and cannot keep the pace up.
Often slingers have to hold back slightly in order to control the ball
anyway. Overall, I would say that slinging has no benefit and a more
conventional action is the way to to.
Did anyone see Tait's performance in the ING cup final (the Australian domestic one day competition)? He got 6 wickets but also bowled about 20 wides. A strange display of fast bowling. |

I watched it on television, he was awesome, when he gets it on line he is devastating...he bowled 12 wides because his skipper Darren Lehmann told him to just gofor it and bowl fast. In a test match it would have only been about 5 wides, many of tem were harshly called.

I have a sling action when I bowl pace. Allthough, it does generate some good pace to mess up the batsman, especially when bowling short to him. You are more prone to getting injuries, I have had an elbow problem when bowling with my sling action, nothing much on the injury list now.. Oh, and Shaun Tait was bloody awesome. He lands them on the spot, he will be a pain in the ass, and very scary, with that pace. Imagine it, Brett Lee, and Tait against the English. ![]() I also watched every minute of that ING Cup Final. He bowled superbly. Those wides would not have been called wides in Test Match cricket. I believe he deserves a spot for the SA Test Matches, over Kaspa, and Gillespie. Glenn McGrath said he would be un-available for the test series. A good attack would be including, two fast bowlers, a genuine swing bowler, and Shane Warne. Fast bowling comes naturally , though , you should work on your
shoulder strength , when you bowl the ball should be above your head or
say just close to your right ear, and stick your chest out.
Go for long run-ups & simple bowling action , do not let your arm bend , keep it stretch when releasing the ball. You should have a balanced action, I mean your shoulders and the hips must fall in the same line, try to have a balanced follow through hey try this , pitch the ball up between 4-8 yards area close to off-stump and tell me does it affect the batsman? ![]() ![]() |

i am a quick bowler, and my action used to be pretty good then something changed and i went really rubbish, i bowled balls that rubbish batsmen could eat for breakfast, but since i have been working on my action and found it was my follow through that was most important, and now i get loads of pace, bounce and accuracy simply because i have a proper follow through. Does anybody know anywhere were i can find out how fast i bowl? |
