SAME AGAIN
England's selectors have announced an unchanged squad for the 4th npower Test at Trent Bridge. The same XI has played in the first three Ashes Tests. Just compare that with the last four losing Ashes series at home. When David Gower was captain in 1989, 29 players were used, 24 played in 1993 under Graham Gooch and Michael Atherton, 18 in 1997 under Atherton, and four years ago when Nasser Hussain was skipper 19 were used.
In 1989, only Gower and Jack Russell were ever-present. In 1993, it was Gooch, Atherton and Alec Stewart. The last two played throughout the 1997 series, along with Hussain and Graham Thorpe. In 2001, six England players appeared in all five npower Tests - Atherton, Stewart, Mark Butcher, Marcus Trescothick, Darren Gough and Andrew Caddick.


TRESCOTHICK NEARS RECORD
Marcus Trescothick is 30 runs short of Trevor Bailey's total of 875 runs against Australia, the highest by an English batsman without scoring a century. Bailey's best was 88 at Brisbane on Len Hutton's 1954/55 tour, while Trescothick's top score, 90, came in this summer's Edgbaston victory.


VAUGHAN & TRESCOTHICK NECK AND NECK
England skipper Michael Vaughan and Marcus Trescothick have both scored 845 runs in Ashes Tests. Trescothick's runs have come in 13 Tests at an average of 32.50, while Vaughan has only played eight times against Australia. His average of 52.81 includes four centuries.


TRESCOTHICK CHALLENGES FOR TOP SPOT
Marcus Trescothick has already scored 859 runs in 2005 and is closing in on the current leader for the year, Jacques Kallis (896 runs). Trescothick has five more Tests in 2005 to reach 1,000 runs for the third year in a row and looks certain to reach his highest total yet. In 2003, the Somerset left-hander made 1,003 - and last year his total was 1004.


FLINTOFF CHALLENGES WARNE
Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff is this year's second-highest Test wicket-taker with 40, two behind Shane Warne. Freddie's best year was 2004 (43 wickets). In his first six years of Test cricket, Flintoff scored 1209 runs and took 52 wickets. Since the start of 2004, he's scored 1224 runs and taken 83 wickets. He now needs another 67 runs and 15 wickets to become only the second England cricketer to reach 2500 runs and 150 wickets in Tests. Ian Botham, of course, leads the way (5200 runs and 383 wickets)


GERAINT ON TOP
Geraint Jones heads the test list of wicket-keeping dismissals this year. His total of 36 victims (all catches) is three ahead of South Africa's Mark Boucher. Australia's Adam Gilchrist has played one more test that Jones in 2005 (9), but is in fifth place with 21 catches (no stumpings).


BOTHAM'S DEBUT/BOYCOTT'S RETURN
England have only won one Ashes Test at Trent Bridge since 1930 - and that was in 1977 when Ian Botham made his debut and Geoff Boycott returned to test cricket after his self-imposed exile. Botham took 5/74; his first test wicket was the Australian captain Greg Chappell. Boycott, after running out local hero Derek Randall, went on to score his 13th test century in England's seven-wicket win.


WARNE CLOSES IN ON LILLEE
Shane Warne needs 16 wickets from the final two npower Ashes Tests to become the highest wicket taker in England-Australia Tests. Warne's 600th Test wicket at Old Trafford took him ahead of Ian Botham (148) and now only Lillee (167) is ahead of him. Warne is already the highest wicket-taker in Ashes history as all his victims have been Ashes wickets. Lillee and Botham both played in Centenary matches and in the 1979/80 series when the Ashes were not at stake.


ANOTHER MILESTONE
This week's npower Ashes Test will be the 150th Test between England and Australia in England. The overall record stands at 42 England wins, 46 for Australia and 61 draws. It was only in 1997 that Australia went ahead in this particular contest for the first time.

Lord's has the worst record of England defeats against Australia - Trent Bridge has the poorest return of England victories, just three in 19 Tests. The best overall record belongs to the Brit Oval, with 15 wins and six defeats in 33 Tests.
