Amla/de Villiers partnership is crucial. They need to extend the lead to at least 150-160 before either is dismissed because SA lower MO and tail seem extremely fragile. If SA can get to about 250 then this Test match is set up wonderfully. Anything below 250 and I fancy AUS to chase it down.

This looks set to be another excellent match, though as things stand you would have to think that SA will need to implode or Australia play exceptionally well for the visitors to win it. Every day of Test cricket in the series has been absolutely absorbing, which makes it all the more sickening that there is only 2 Tests.

as usual AUA and RSA have given us another riveting contest, this has always been the case in the series between these two nations.
Two future legends at the crease have put RSA in total command of the game, Prince and Boucher to come, I'd expect RSA to set a target in excess of 400 which will be very difficult to chase, 2-0 to RSA in my view.

Australia really missed out in the first test - should have led by 400 and won. Still in shock with what happened. South Africa need to collapse yet again for Australia to have a chance.
Any script writers here? How about writing a fairytale for Ponting... matchwinning ton in what is supposedly his last innings!! |

Mikey Ponting is a champion player and there is no way that he is going out like this, Ponting has another 7-8 tons in him before he calls it a day, look no one is doing exceptionally well with the bat in this series, may be except for Hashim no one has been really good in the test series so far both sides combined, so why blame Ponting alone?
Australia's next two series are against two teams they really hate to lose to, New Zealand and India, I expect Ponting to score at least 2-3 centuries in those 6 tests. Ricky is a legend, he is the only player I'd rate at par with Sachin as the best of this era.

I wish Sam, Ponting is a legend but his performances have not been up to test standard. He has been a burden, and it's frustrating for everyone because we don't want him to go, but he can't justify his spot. Eventually he'll walk away if he can't make any runs, because he'll know he has become a liability. Hayden did the same thing, even though we could see from IPL where he was scoring a lot of runs that he still had it in him.
Hashim has been in lovely form, no doubt about that, he has shown fluency for a long period of time now and is much improved. He won't be a test captain though after we saw his ODI performance and his comments, so I think that'll be a great benefit to his batting and he'll continue to improve. I do think however, that Johnson is playing his last match. He's bowling off about 10 strides now, and it's kind of pathetic to be honest. Extremely non penetrative here, while Siddle as usual can't even buy a wicket. The selectors need to move on. Against NZ at the 'Gabba I expect the attack to consist of Cummins, Harris and Copeland, unless they feel that Cutting deserves a debut at his home ground. Lyon should retain his spot, although O'Keefe is my pick. Personally, I feel that Cummins has proved himself in this test. To be the best bowler for his nation and probably the 2nd best after Steyn (who is the no1 bowler in the world in my opinion) in this match is a great show. He has a very good technique and action, bowls accurately and has genuine pace and bounce. His lack of experience is of course a worry, but his selection was an inspired one and I'm satisfied with his performance and his 3-for so far. Only thing that worries me about his style is his huge gallop and leap, which can be a burden on the knees and ankles. Edited by Mikey - 20 November 2011 at 8:18am |

I agree he is a champion player and he wont retire so soon Milky this is NOT his last innings mate. I still see him as Australia's best batsman but just need one good innings I REALLY REALLY HOPE HE GETS A MATCH WINNING HUNDRED in this game. |

Pat Cummins takes 6/79 on debut, what a magical time for him. Can you believe it? His 4th first class match, and another Australian debutant to get his maiden 5-for in his debut test (to go along with Krejza and Lyon).

wow! we are in for a thrilling final day, Ponting is still there and for the first time I have seen Khawaja display the talent that he has, for the first time I felt he really is some find.
Much depends on Ponting and Clarke, a wicket early ntomorrow and it will be difficult for AUS, but a 50 or so run partnership and AUS will be on top. I like Australia as a team very much but South Africa are one of my most favorite teams and I would surely support them, Go RSA Go!!!

Khawaja's pulling was sublime. This is the first time we saw him do his thing, and his first opportunity to really impress and make a difference. I'm upset he didn't get a chance to make 3 figures, as he was playing a really classy knock. Ponting looked awesome, and I'm proud of his determination - he's a real great of this game. If he and Clarke can form a partnership tomorrow the Aussies have a chance! This would be a great win for Australia if they can manage it, and I think right now the match is even. This has been a great series and it's shame it's only 2 tests. Take out that stupid 47 Australia made, which I believe was an outlier event, and the series has been quite even.

It's a toss up as to who will win this one , I think we'll have a few hiccups before the winner emerges sometime today. It's been an absorbing encounter with some quality batting and bowling. Steyn's reverse swing on Friday afternoon was simply fantastic and would've troubled any batsman playing the game today. Imran Tahir will be in the spotlight today and could be the match winner , although I think he overreacts when taking a wicket - he bowls a lot of rubbish interspersed with the good ones as well. Young Cummins has had a dream debut and fully deserved his 6 fer and Johnson does look shot - how long will they persevere with him ?
I think the 1st hour will determine the winner - lose a couple quickly and I don't think we'll get past lunch. But if Ponting and Clarke get set I'd fancy the Aussies to make it 1-1. A lot will depend on how SA play this - I'd like to think they'll be attacking and not waiting for something to happen. If there are sweepers on both sides of the wicket , third man and fine leg I want them to get beaten! It's a 5th day pitch and will be a little up and down and should turn , so surely Smith should attack - but SA are known to sit back............. |

I'd back SA to win, now that Punter and Pup are back in the sheds. Two huge blows. All depends now on Hussey and the VERY out of sorts Haddin. Only thing that's helping Australia is that SAF are chokers.

Johnson will probably go and cloud the issue over his place in the side again with a matchwinning innings here.

That'd be a huge issue! If he did play a matchwinning innings what should the selectors do? I'd still drop him, but I'd keep around and see how he goes in Shield cricket. They did it in the last Ashes and then he got 6-for in Perth (then not much else for the rest of the series to be fair). |

Haddin out but I feel that partnership has taken Australia home. Some wonderful counter-attacking batting from Australia after Tea aided by some pretty poor bowling. If SA win from here, it will be something pretty special. This just shows why wicket-keepers need to bat and it shows the value of a good number 8 in the batting line-up.

The most proud Australian right now. Such an amazing match. Patrick Cummins, fittingly, hits the winning runs. What a magical debut. One of the most fascinating series I have watched in a long, long time.
Clobber called it right, Johnson's well paced 40 made the difference. |

for South Africa, great test match, Australia played well, well done, quite disappointed with the result as I was supporting the South Africans. Nonetheless, it's a tied series and I think with the kind of competition we've had between the two sides, a 1-1 scoreline is a justified result.

Two of the worlds great sporting nations, truly. Australia, after the debacle in the first test, which they should have won, have come back and taken victory. Is this another South Africa choke?

They've bowled pretty poorly throughout that second innings, but I wouldn't say they choked, they just couldn't stand up to the resilience of the Aussies.
Quite appropriate that Cummins should hit the winning runs. Just imagine if there was going to be a deciding Test, how great would that have been? |

If Aussies would have lost this match by 25-30 runs , cricket pundits would have closed few cases ( I mean few careers, would have taken CA and Aussies cricketers left right and center), funny result is so much more important than it is acutally thought to be. I agree winning or losing are part and parcel of game, the way you compete is most important than winning ... but in reality, sometimes "Result" matters more than we all think it does.
Anyway it was a fantastic series, deserved a decider for sure. Happy that India back to #2 slot Edited by MalhotraRaj84 - 21 November 2011 at 4:42pm |

Clobber - I wouldn't say they bowled poorly throughout. Just mainly after Tea, they just bowled some horrible deliveries to hand the momentum to Johnson and Haddin. Aside from that, I think they were rather unlucky. So many deliveries just beating the bat of Haddin when he was new, Hussey nearly chopped on to Steyn, Hussey nearly caught at slip off Tahir, dropped catch of Cummins by Steyn and Gould not giving a 50-50 decision when Australia needed 4 to win. Little things went against them; they have a fabulous, complete team that I believe will go on to thrash the Sri Lankans. Well done to the Aussies.

Michael Clarke: "I didn't score many runs in this Test but it feels like I just got my first double hundred for Australia, I couldn't be happier."..... To me this line looks very artificial and I feel Clarke is trying to be too good too soon , none of these cliches' will work when selector sit and disect success/failure percentages, its only results as a captain that counts in their eyes
Has anyone observed Clarke in these Test series ? Captaincy looks to take a heavy toll on him esp. when his team looked down the barrel - Not a good sign for captain. If Aus keep getting better and better, probably this flaw will not be hilighted.
It is still very early days though , but I think he will break soon under pressure (If Aus dont perform well). I really doubt if he can handle captaincy pressure in high profile series like Ashes etc.

What a match this is why Test cricket is the best!! only 2 test match is a joke
and Clarke did very well but he must learn not to over use bowlers. Cummins bowled too many overs he is young and i think he should only bowl around 15 overs in a day no more than that.

Down to the wire with all results possible until the winning hit ! Haddin looked dreadful early on and rode his luck , but after that played with freedom and peppered the boundary. Johnson played positively as well and showed great maturity in picking which ball to free the hands at. I didn't have many thoughts on Smith's captaincy until he chose Tahir for that fateful last over. Philander had been the best bowler for the home side for most of this match and certainly in the 2nd innings. His length and late swing troubled everyone and the ball that did for Haddin was a beauty. I expect Smith thought that Johnson was more comfortable against the seamers , but offsetting that was the dross that Tahir managed to find at least once in every over. No matter that he's knocked a few over I think he's some way from being a test bowler of note and his consistent traipsing all over the pitch will get him in trouble before long. Someone of his age and experience simply shouldn't be doing it!
Everyone's diappointed about the length of this series - it's like having two squares of chocolate - delicious , but nowhere near enough! Both countries' cricketing bodies must make it known to the ICC that this mustn't happen again - in fact 2 test series shouldn't happen at any time , even with the weakest nations. All in all SA came close to 2-0 , but it could well have been 2-0 the other way - that shows just how fascinating the matches were and how little there is between the sides. The return series in Oz could well be just as exciting. Cummings could be something special , but they need to keep him grounded. The papers today will have him thinking he's superman.
