Topic: Australia v Sri LankaPosted: 25 October 2007 at 9:13am |

The Sri Lankans have arrived down under so this is a good time to make this thread.
Schedule; Sat 27 - Mon 29 October 10:30 local, 01:00 GMT Cricket Australia Chairman's XI v Sri Lankans Adelaide Oval Fri 2 - Sun 4 November 10:00 local, 00:00 GMT Queensland v Sri Lankans Allan Border Field, Brisbane Thu 8 - Mon 12 10:00 local, 00:00 GMT 1st Test - Australia v Sri Lanka Brisbane Cricket Ground, Woolloongabba, Brisbane Fri 16 - Tue 20 10:30 local, 23:30 GMT 2nd Test - Australia v Sri Lanka Bellerive Oval, Hobart Sri Lanka Squad Mahela Jayawardene (capt), Kumar Sangakkara, Sanath Jayasuriya, Marvan Attapattu, Upul Tharanga, Michael Vandort, Chamara Silva, Thilan Samaraweera, Jehan Mubarak, Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), Chaminda Vaas, Lasith Malinga, Dilhara Fernando, Farveez Maharoof, Chanaka Welagedera, Muttiah Muralitharan, Malinga Bandara. A lot of interest revolves around the make up of the Australian side though at the moment most believe that Jaques will open and MacGill will assume the spinner's berth. |

Talented squad and experienced too ! They'll be terrific crowds ,
but undoubtably one or two idiots who'll give Murali a hard time.
I still think Australia have too many guns , but I expect a good contest. Nothing will change my opinion of two test series though - just dumb ! Edited by Sledger - 25 October 2007 at 9:28am |

You had to guffaw at Jason Gillespie's comments along the lines of Murali will definitely cop some abuse, some of it maybe even racial, but he'll just have to grin and bear it.
This being the same Jason Gillespie who sulked and bleated his way through the second half of the Ashes 2005 tour because a few people in the crowd mocked his hairstyle. |

Short memory huh ! I'd like to think that decent Aussie fans
will turn on the loudmouths . It's not as if the taunts are going to be
any different from previous ones and not funny either.

I'm looking forward to this series very much so! In my opinion the two strongest sides in Cricket at the moment, despite Sri Lanka's recent ODI losses to England. With Murali they're a different unit. In my opinion this has the potential to be an excellent display with a full-strength Lankan line-up and a recently depleted (not really, though?) Australian side. Agreed though Sledge; two tests?????

Giving just two tests to Bangladesh makes sense , but when top sides meet there must be at least three. I suppose there's only so many weeks in a year and Australia seem to be playing in all of 'em for the next twelve months !
Great organisation , the ICC. |

There's a Commonwealth Bank Series in the early part of the Australian summer which involves India, Sri Lanka and Australia, Monty.

Sri Lanka has a good unit and can cause some problems for the Aussies but for me, that Aussie side is still too strong for them!
And the 2nd test could well see Murali being the leading wicket taker in test history! Good luck to the man and I hope the crowd behaves themself!

There'll be a huge attendance to the game you can be sure fo that. The question is, how many of them will be giving Murali a standing ovation once he passes that record?

He could pass the milestone in the 1st test , but the seamers
usually do the job at the Gabba. Unless he breaks down , he
will pass Warne on this trip and I hope the cricket lovers of Australia
give him the applause he deserves.

I'm sure most of them will. Cricket Australia will be doing everything to make Murali's achievement celebrated, even if it means throwing out those who are misbehaving. They'll be on their best behaviour but the sledging will be done behind backs.

how would the Aussies feel if Murali were to take up Peter Roebuck's challenge and give a public demonstration like he did in England a few years ago where he bowled in an arm brace and still produced all his variations? Would it win over any sceptics?

I always love watching cricket in Aussie. The crowds should be huge and fantastic. The Pitches has pace and bounce which I love so much and it also bring batsman technique off the backfoot into action( my kind of stuff). Also it starts around 8pm for me, which usually leads into a good night sleep for me just be watching the match live.

Don't expect him to be at his best- a shy man Murali, 9 wickets is a number to get, even for him!

Steve Waugh has announced the Australian Test XI
Matthew Hayden

Michael Clarke
Michael Hussey

Adam Gilchrist
Brett Lee
Mitchell Johnson
Stuart Clark
Stuart MacGill
There is a good article written by Steve Waugh about his choice of players here:

I do hope he improves his record in Australia along with getting 9 wickets which I think, he should be able to get, given that he plays both the tests.

I can't view the link. No surprises there, it would have been the team I would have picked. No doubt that Macgill will have to prove his worth, there's not much between him and Hogg. |

Would be nice to see what Steve Waugh had to say, it's possible to search the daily telegraph through google, though.
I was convinced they wouldn't go with Hogg or make an liberal decisions given it's the first test match since the retirement of the trio. Lee taking on more responsibility and the new ball going to....Clark or Johnson? Would've liked to have seen Hogg, but MacGill had to be chosen for the first test- let's see how he goes! Hogg's been in better form to be honest. But I doubt the selectors will go past MacGill and his previous test experience.
I personally think Hogg should be selected, after his success in the World Cup, the Sri Lankans can't pick Hogg's deliveries so they'll be happy if Macgill's selected. |

Australian batting is too strong. Thier bowling might well be exposed, but they will cover it up with thier batting. 2-0 Australia

I don't see how they will cover up their bowling with their batting? Their bowling is still strong and it will come down to other's doing their bit for Sri Lanka, a part from the usual suspect they rely on.
Who's going to take the new ball with Lee?
