Ritchy Beneud has come out said that Ricky Ponting is the best Australian captain in the last 30 years. This is a controversal decision seeing that Ricky was the captain of last years Ashes loss. Who do you think is Australia's best Ashes Captain in the last 30 years.

hey mp12 i think steve waugh. he was more flexible than ponting coz he cood bowl... and get wickets. yes ponting a very good captain and will probabl b a legend. i just think mr. stephen waugh... by a bee's d***

Richie is a legend, if he says Ricky then it is hard to go against him.. Although Waugh and Taylor were inspirational and innovative.

Greg Chappell and Kim Hughes get a mention , yet Ian Chappell is left out - that's just daft!!

I think Shane warne is better as a captain compared to Pontting! thinking of the best ever, I would go for Allen border who actually transformmed ausies to real champions, others just had to carry that through!

Ian Chappell was captain between 1970 to 1975 so unfortunatly he is one year off 30 years from 2006. |

Richie has lost it if he thinks Ponting is a better captain than Border, Greg Chappell or Waugh anyway.
(The other names in the poll aren't relevent to Richie's comments since he has picked his best Ashes XII of the last 30 years and then chosen his captain from that selection, so guys like Taylor, Ian Chappell and..erm...Hughes, weren't elligible). |

I must concur. As good a batsman as Ponting is , he just doesn't strike me as the cerebral type out on the park! Border and Waugh looked subversive and untrustworthy - perfect captaincy material!! |

I would has said Waugh or Border, they were stubborn, innovative, and led by example (pretty much the best in their sides, particularly Border) - Border was like a colonel, leading young lieutenants.

RB has gone absolutaly senile. He was the first Aussie captain to lose the urn in 16 yrs for gods sake, and with the squad he had at his disposal that is criminal. Let's not forget that wonderfull decision to send England into bat at Edgbaston |

Well, from that list, I have only seen Waugh and Ponting and to be honest, Benaud is out of his mind this time by saying Ponting is better than Waugh. Waugh was more aggressive than Ponting! I remember times where the new ball was taken and you couldn't have find a gap between the keeper and Gully. You hardly see that from Punter! Waugh is one of the best skippers I have seen. |

Waugh was a fantastic leader in the way he inspired greatness from his players. By stating Hayden would double his average, his faith in Langer, plus there was never a more intimidating sight than his stare. Forget Merv, Ambrose, etc, the steely gaze of Stephan Roger Waugh cast fear into opponents as they knew regardless of the outcome, they were not here for a game of cricket...they were here for WAUGH. People have said taking over that side it was impossible to fail. What he did was take over a champion side and somehow make them invincible. The aura that surrounded his era makes me envious of anyone who was able to experience the 48 invincibles. I am confident I shall never see such domination in any form of sport again in my lifetime.

No doubt Waugh was one of the toughest men around , losing just wasn't an option. Then again , he probably learnt a lot of the hardnosed stuff from AB !!
Remember the Jones dehydration incident in India - the man nearly died and asked AB to go off , retired hurt. The reply went something like ,"Fine , bugger off and send in a real Australian!" Jones stayed out there and made a double before ending up in hospital! Ponting's a lil fluffy bunny rabbit compared to AB and Tugger! |

Agreed! The test of Ponting's mantle shall come in the next 4-5 years. Ponting will end up with every batting record bar the average by the time he retires but it is how he manages first this aging list and then the transitional one that is soon approaching. Lose Gilchrist, Lanhger, Hayden, Martyn, Warne, McGrath and Ponting will still have a better list than Border inherited. |

 Depressing days.We have like 6 or 7 quicks now to chose from, 3 keepers, at least 10 batsmen, and at least 5 spinners..and this is for an 11 man line up!

Right again!! Marsh did a brilliant job in setting up the academy in England. That , and central contracts are the main reasons for the team's resurgance as a cricketing force.

Brilliant post BOBBI! I always told myself that S Waugh was one of the greatest players I have seen play. S Waugh transfered the game as well. He was a player who liked to see the score board ticking all the time and thats why attacking in batting is a big part of the game these days. S Waugh, not the greatest feet mover but a brilliant batter. He was tough; tell me, how many players have we known to try and slog sweep Akhtar. Waugh is the only I have seen attempt it allthough he was unsuccessful. |

Do you recall his 120 against SA in the world cup where he saved australia. He slog swept Elworthy, the opening bowler who let thm go around 140. That is ballsy or cocky enough for me. I am forever grateful S. Waugh cannot be put in the category of great all rounders as his bowling loss only increased his application with the bat.

Yeah, I recall it allthough I wanted the proteas to win the match. I got to say that Gibbs probably made the biggest blunder of his life in that match too. He was a good hooker too but after he went out in 2002 I think and then came back in 2003, he hardly use to play it again but for me, he was one of the greatest slog sweepers I have seen. |
