Hi,
Do you guys know that the majority of the world's bats are made in India, around 80%. I would like to know if any of you guys actually know where the factories are so that I might go there and check out some bats. Cheers |

Sareen sports are a major manufacturer. They make Sunridges bats,as well as Sommers and bats for many other major brands I suspect. Don't know where they're based though. Mark. |

I would imagine India is a little like China in the respect that people get a couple of days a month off including weekends. The Indian factories will be very volume driven I guess and the workers will probably need the extra money. The SS and BDM bats are excellent value for money and very often perform as well as major label brands from the UK,who tend thesedays to be moving at least some of their production to bat factories in India. BDM is excellent. I have the BDM Sting, a nice thick edge profile and the whole bat is a sweet spot, I once got a thick edge, and it went for six. Not very heavy either. Perfect bat for me.

I saw on an episode of the Aus cricket show a story about a town called gelandah (dunno about the spelling!) but its where a lot of the cricket gear balls, pads etc is made. There are like rows of garage like stores with people in there stitching away.
They also toured the BAS factory where the podshaver claimed to make Sachin's bats. |

It's certainly true that the main batmaker at BAS has made bats for ST.There is an article on Middlepeg's website about this which is very interesting. There seem to be many others who claim to make bats for him.I'm sure he has the pick of what is available in India. His bats are reputed to be made from Mulberry wood which is heavier and denser than willow, and his bats are meant to be over 3 pounds in weight, which is unusual for a pro cricketer these days. Cheers, Mark. |

I have been to Meerut and it is absoluetly amazing. I have found out that one of the people making BDM/SS is also actually making bats for Kookaburra.

JALANDHAR & MEERUT are the two main manufacturing cities of cricket goods. SS make Woodoworm equipment. SG make Kookaburra bats and equipment, and gray nicholls and GM pads and gloves |

I don't think he claims to make Tendulkar's bats, more that he created the S10 in tribute to Sachin

And many other well known brands too!I wish the manufacturers would come clean so to speak.Probably why you don't see phrases like "Made In England" or "hand crafted In England",like you used to at one time on batmakers logos.I think this is a bit depressing and have changed my opinion on whether I would buy an English branded bat.I think you might as well buy the Indian bat and save some money or go to a small hand builder and give them your business. Anyone who has any doubts about the validity of my opening statement, have a look at say a new Slaz SXI and a Sommers XXX.The wood and profile are exactly the same.In fact they could be one and the same bat balance wise etc.In fact on the Slaz bats I've seen there is a barcode on the handle and lettering which states Made in India ( although Kippax are meant to be making the pro bats!!) Mark.

Well said Mark,we are going to include those very words : Hand crafted in England with English willow.
I think all manufactuers should label where they are from and hand or machine made. Bill |

To be honest Charlie.I think most folks accept the soft goods issue,as it has been the case for many years and the manufacturers don't tend to try and camouflage the fact that most pads and gloves are made to very high standards in India and Pakistan.I totally agree with Bill. All manufacturers should have to state where their product is made instead of just conveniently leaving it off their label.Bill best of luck and continued success, hope to be visiting you soon to discuss a new bat. Mark.

I would guess the the Vampire you bought in Jallandhar was a copy. Why on earth would BDM send there bats from Meerut to Jallandhar to sell on the side of the road? When I was in a VERY well know bat factory in Pakistan,I saw a pack of MRF labels on a shelf (these had been printed in Pakistan as the contact number on the bat sheets confirmed this). |
