What is the best ever innings in the history of cricket? I want you to take note of the bowling attack, the state of the pitch, what the rest of his teams scores were and whether or not it was a dead rubber match. I have decided to choose Stan McCabe's 187* against bodyline bowling on a lightning pitch against Larwood, with the second highest score being 49. What do you think is the best ever innings?

Going only on innings I've seen (which basically amounts to matches involving England in the last 10-15 years) I think I'd go for Pontings 156 to sace the Old Trafford test last summer

I would say Graham Gooch's 154 not out against the West Indies at Leeds in 1991. On a seaming tracking against Marshall, Ambrose, Patterson and Walsh he carried his bat in the 2nd innings out of a team total of 252 - to add further context to the brilliance of the innings, the other 3 innings scores were 198, 173 and 162.

I wouldn't include the 400 on the basis that a) it was on the most ridiculously benign pitch and b) it totally killed the game elaving it a pointless draw

Is it possible for a mod to move this thread to general cricket talk because I think it would get more replies there.

I agree with you Slogger but not a lot of people would think along the same lines as we would. Many people would saw that he did not give the team an opportunity to win and it was a selfish innings. Most people would say something like that. However, it was an AMAZING innings and you are dead right about his concentration being incredible. I mean for someone to stay at the wicket for so many hours and make that much runs takes a lot of concentration and focus. It is really not an easy thing to do.

I remember that one daisy! In Barbados in 99! Lara and Walsh was in and lara saw them through with a shot of Gillespie through cover region for 4. Healy had dropped Lara late on I think. And as usual, the Windies fan ran on to the field celebrating.

Best Innings for me, it's hard to say but I liked the 196 & 176 against SA in 2005. They were such electrifing knocks against an in form Ntini and Nel.

to be honest Lara is such a great that most of his big innings have been great, he has had massive scores against all top nations. What a player.

Tendulkar's 114* as a 17 year old on a fast and bouncy Perth Wicket.
"His classical hits down the ground, met with a checked drive, were Tendulkar at his best. It was though he had a new lease of life." - Sachin Tendulkar's return to cricket with a 91-Ball century.

If I remember correctly Adam Gilchrist got the second fastest ever century in an Ashes test against England? Wasn't half bad. Dead

Smith made 148 out of 354, which while a fine effort, I wouldn't put in the same class as Gooch's.

i think lara is a very poor player,he is soo inconsistent and who the hell is selfish enough to make 401* not out.His big innings ahrdly result in wins. The best innings is Viv Richards fastest century 100 off 56 balls-that truly is remarkable and is yet to be broken.

No, but it was still pretty good, those two were the only reason we drew that series.

Thats a dead stupid thing to say, it was a dead rubber game and why not make the most out of a bad pitch? He made it off 500 balls so it was a very quick quadruple century as well.

Selfish?? Are you saying if you played a dead rubber on a great pitch and had the opportunity to achieve a world record score, you would throw your wicket away so people would think you're a nice chap? You're getting delusional mate. Dead

I think Lara's 501* for Warwickshire against Durham, a world record score, I've never seen it but they must have been amazing, most teams don't even score that put together, so for one player to do that is amazing.
