It was a great innings in my book but not the best I have seen. Everyone has their opinions and we see different so.... anyways, that knock got the Aussies out of a hole to make them win the match.

Im my opinion it is a Mark Waugh innings of 130 odd to turn certain defeat into a draw against a brilliant South African bowling attack. Ritchie Benaud ranks this one amongst his best three along with Gilchrist's 149* against Pakistan and Pontings 156 at Lords.

I think the best ever innings has to be Ted Alletson's 189 for Nottinghamshire against Sussex in 1911. Coming in at number 9 with the score at 185-7, and his team only 11 runs ahead in their second innings, Notts lost two more wickets and were on 260-9, only 86 runs ahead of Sussex, and Alletson was then on 47. Then Alletson went into super slog mode, he utterly destroyed the Sussex bowling attack and scored what was then a record 34 runs off one over (a record which would not be beaten until Gary Sobers scored 36 off one over many years later). Of the 152 runs put on for the final wicket, Alletson scored 142 of them, and was the last man out on 189. They were all out for 412, and they set Sussex 237 to win, Sussex were saved by time in the end as they were 213-8 at the end of the final day's play.

Incidentally that was the only century which Alletson ever scored, a remarkable innings.

He was only a part-time bowler, back in those days they used to bat in really random batting orders some of the time.

Benaud ranking three Aussie innings as the best - there's objectivity for you Confused
When you win the toss - bat.
If you are in doubt, think about it - then bat. If you have very big doubts, consult a colleague - then bat.

Well i would take his word for it. He has seen more cricket than anyone on this planet i would say. Unless of course you know more than Ritchie Benaud then i guess we would all be listening to you, wouldnt we?ConfusedConfusedConfused

Tonks tonks tonks ......... Margaret Thatcher was one of the world's greatest living leaders, but no-one takes a word the ageing bitter bint says seriously anymore.  The point is probably lost on you, but I'll make it anyway.

Now, nowhere did I suggest (1) that I knew more about cricket than Benaud or (2) that he isn't well placed to cast judgement, but if those three innings are his best of all time (and a link to the primary source would be appreciated) then the old campaigner may have entered 'Thatcher-state'.

W.G, its actually in a magazine article that i have so i cannot supply the link. I guess i didn't even need to throw that in as at the end of the day it is my opinion that Mark Waugh's innings is the best i have seen. Mind you  i have to agree with you that Ritchie has been losing it a bit!

Interestingly a google of 'Benaud greatest innings opinion' returns HVVS Laxman's knock of 167 at Sydney against Australia in January 2000 as "probably the finest I have ever seen".

he batted for almost 11 hours to save the test for England, the last 4.5 hours of which he was joined by Jack Russel.

don't get me wrong: I hate Atherton. it's my duty as a South African to hate him with all the passion Donald did in that series. but **** that was the most belligerent knock I have ever seen.

How about New Zealand batsmen Bert Sutcliffe's 385 for Otago against Canterbury in 1952. He scored 385 out of a total of 500 as Otago won by an innings. Sutcliffe scored almost more runs in that innings than Canterbury in both innings combined scored in the match.

I am afraid neither of Haydens really do it for me, if you want to talk about a great innings, Dean Jones in india, not sure exact year, 80's somthing. He ended up in hospital from dehydration, I think he scored 210.

That was an amazing innings for sure - apparently it was so hot drinks had to be taken every 20 minutes. It's also the infamous one where Jones was so ill he told Allan Border he couldn't continue and had to retire hurt, only for his skipper to chide him with "alright, if that's how you feel, let's get a REAL Australian out here".

May not be the greatest innings ever, but certainly an innings of note:
1994, SA vs NZ ODI series in South Africa.
Dave Callaghan had just returned to the cricketing arena after having recovered from a struggle with testicular cancer. He opened the innings for SA, and went on to make 169*, and bowled a career best of 3/34 in the same match. Was truly an inspiration to all cancer patients that it can be beaten.
