I think that Ponting's innings was an easy one. A small stadium on a batting track with no pressure. Gibbs had much more pressure, but Richards innings was out the world. Second greatest ODI innings in my view. |

The greatest innings I saw would be Javed Miandad's against India when he hit a six in the last ball. They showed the match so many times that month, I nearly memorised every ball. Lance Klusener's great knock against the Aussies in the WC '99 semi-final. There have been so many, I need to time to recall all of them. Ganguly's first ball duck. Never knew he could he could stay out in the middle for so long. |

How are we rating this innings? By strike rate? By situation? By opposition?

Michael Bevan, against the West Indies, 4 on the last ball to win the match. He got like 78* or something.
Also against NZ, when Bevan got a ton and guided Australia to an unimaginable win against NZ, seriously we were down and dusted.

That 78* off 120 odd balls was fantastic and it really showed the good and bad of this sport. Roger Harper claimed a caught and bowled off bEVAN ONLY FOR THE REPLAY TO PROVE bEVAN WAS RIGHT IN STANDING HIS GROUND. tHE BALL BOUNCED WELL SHORT OF HARPER WHO CLAIMED THE CATCH. bAD SHOWMANSHIP BY BOTH FOR bEVAN TO DISAGREE AND STAND HIS GROUND AND FOR hARPER TO CLAIM IT. tHE SAME TWO SHOWED WHY THIS GAME IS GREAT WHEN hARPER WAS HIT STRIGHT BACK OVER HIS HEAD FOR FOUR BY bEVVAN OFF THE LAST BALL. rATHER THAN BE UPSET AND SULK, hARPER RAISED HIS HAND AND GAVE A CONGRATULATORY HIGH FIVE TO bEVAN SHOWING THE WAY THIS GAME SHOULD BE PLAYED.

A man who never looked like he was really trying at all. A sign of pure genius. Gee I wish I was old enough to have seen David Gower!!!!

Gower was my favourite player when I was a youngster; just a joy to watch and made the game look so easy when in touch. By the same token he was very frustrating with the number of times he got out to lazy wafts outside his off stump, but where genius is concerned you take the rough with the smooth.

Would you prefer to watch the grace and elegance of one of the above mentioned or brute power of Symonds, jayasaria, Richards? |

I wouldn't say the first two deserve to be in a category with IVA Richards, who was much more than brute force anyway.

I'd go with Saeed Anwar's 194 which was simply an outstanding inning or Javed Miandad's 116* against India in the 1986 Sharjah Cup Final which came under IMMENSE pressure.

That's whu I rated Hashan Tillekaratne's 100 ball 100 against WI in 1993 as the best. Chasing a mammoth 333 with all those West Indian quickies aroud. SL manages 330 and lost the game by 3 runs. |

That was a brilliant knock and to make it even more exciting he batted at number 6 and gave the West Indies the fright of their lives.

Batting Base points The batting base points are given for runs scored. 2. Speed of Scoring Index The strike rate of the batsmen and how it compares to the overall run-rate of the innings. 3. Percentage of Score Index This reflects the percentage of team runs scored by the batsman. 4. Bowling Quality Index The bowling quality index is based on the quality of bowlers who have bowled in the innings. Only bowlers who have bowled at least 15% of the total overs are considered so as to make sure that the fifth bowler does not lower the Index determination adversely. 5. Not out Index This is a low rated parameter, with bonus points being awarded for unbeaten innings under 200 runs. The points awarded diminishes as the score increases. This index has a lower importance compared to Tests. 6. Point of Entry Index This index reflects the entry point and distinguishes between 5 for 1, 27 for 2, 35 for 3 etc. 7. Wickets falling while at crease Index This index reflect the number of wickets seen through by the batsman. An opening batsman, carrying his bat through, gets the highest value. 8. State of play Index Was the batsman's team setting or chasing a target? 9. Match Status Index This is a complex index, which reflects the status of the match. The highest value is given to a successful and close chase (Miandad's 116*). 10. Match Importance Index What was the importance of the match (World Cup finals receive the most points, matches against ICC associate-member countries the fewest)? 11. Result Index This index is based on the player's contribution to the match result. The match should be a win or a tie for points to be allocated. 12. Overs Index Was the match rain-affected? Was it a 50, 55 or 60 over match? In addition, the ratings calculated is downsized proportionately if the innings is less than 100. |

This doesn't really count because it was in a test match but i think i lot of us would agree that today's innings. Gilchrist 102 Not out off 59 balls 172.88 strike rate. I will remember that innings for a long time.

Anwar's 194 was in a One Day match..
Gilchrist's innings today was vintage Gilly. Absolute power. |

I guess it was more valuable because his innings caused his team to win the match because of that innings. It may not have been a better innings but it was more valuable!
