I have just started putting alot of time and effort into some fast bowling. No idea what speed i'm bowling at but its not slow. Hoping to build on that and add in all the variations to prove that someone slightly less then 6ft is capable of it in England/Australia. Just out of interest how tall is Shane Bond, he is far from slow.

shane bond is 6ft+, Kerm u may think u bowl quick but then u see a pro quick bowl, then u kno wot quick is. being tall as a qucik bowler has lots of advantages, u get more carry, u get more movement off the seam, ur yorkers are harder to play because the length is harder to read. but there have been many good short fast bowlers. darren gough is only 5.10 and so was malcolm marshall. if u are short you tend to skid the ball so pitch the ball up and swing it. smaller fast bowlers tend to have to be quicker to be succesful to try and rush batsman. im not tall but when i run in and try and hit the pitch hard i get very good carry and only bowl at 70mph.

Of course, the general conclusion I have come to however is that if
your short, in that case really short, you have to rely on good
technique and a slingy action.

When you win the toss - bat.
If you are in doubt, think about it - then bat. If you have very big doubts, consult a colleague - then bat. |

If you're short, you should become a batsman and make good use of your 'levers' to get into position quickly when facing the bowler. You'd want a bowler to have longer arms than a batsman.

it's better to be small as a spin bowler because there will be more you can do with flight etc...
As a pacer, it's definite advantage to be tall (6ft+). Not only do you get more bounce and things like that but you can also scare the batsman silly. |

good point CCC but i think that if you are tall then you can still be a succesful spinner, like anil kumble, but you will never get the same flight so must rely on bounce. RightHandBat i think what you have said is rubbish. not many people are quality batsman, but even less are very quick bowlers, so if you can bowl quick, bowl! because you have a very rare talent. small batsman do not have gd levers. tall batsman have good levers, their longer arms allow them to create a larger arc when swinging the bat and hit the ball further.

well a good length ball is the same to anyone, so they try and cut it and they have a huge chance of knicking it.

Look at Sachin Tendulkar, or Don Bradman, or Lara, or Ponting, or Gavaskar. They're not even 1.8m, so I don't believe what I've said is rubbish. A batsman and bowler have different biomechanics, or whatever the word is. You'd prefer a bowler to be taller, and have longer arms than a batsman. The Little Master Sachin is only 1.68m and he's always in position earlier than any other batsman, it's because of his short levers, and those short movements which he can use to his advantage to get into position quicker, therfore having more time when batting. |

kevin pietersen is a tall, so is andrew flintoff, so is alistair cook, so is graeme smith, kallis, gilchrist, symonds, white, hayden. small or tall doesnt really matter when your a batsman or a bowler really.

Usually those players who have brilliant technique and aren't really tall, like the ones I mentioned, those are the players who are in position earlier than anyone else and they have time to play their shots, thats what seperates good batsman from the great batsman.

kevin pietersen looks like he has all the time in world to play his shots, who else whips balls a foot outside off and hits them square on the on side?

well...KP is different isn't he...
What RHB is saying is right in that smaller batsmen have less trouble deeling with line/length but taller batsmen do tend to be able to put more power in to their shots off the front foot (height increasing velocity of bat=ball goes further). Taller batsmen also have the adv of a longer reach. Mind, it can also be a disadvantage... |

Height can be a factor in those things but what makes you great is the natural talent that you have. Tendulkar's insticts are probably quicker than others and that's why it looks as if he has the world of time to hit a ball. Height doesn't really make you a better pacer but it gives you the advantage of bounce. Marshall was small but combines speed and swing. Kumble is tall and uses his high realease to generate steepling bounce. If you use what you've got, then you will become great!
