I have been looking around and is there any real reason why a few inches of height seems to vitally important to fast bowling, been looking around player profiles and almost all of the international fast bowlers are 6ft+, is this because of an angle thing or just the fact being taller gives more body strength ?

Yup thats pretty much it, they hit the pitch harder.... also a yorker form a taller man is harder to get under/smash at the death since its coming down at a steeper angle (or something like that) |

yeah quite true, tall bowlers BANG it down into the pitch, giving it bounce and even a bit more movement.
personally, i dont think they have to try as hard, cos they arent throwing the ball horizontally but more downwards =P |

Guess I will have to work extra hard to prove this not entirely correct then =P not that i'm actually all that short just not quite the 6ft+ all the internationals are.

Arguably the best and the fastest bowler of the world at his time Malcolm Marshal was never a tall man and he had an awsome rising delivery, though he never bowled too many yorkers. Though it really helps being tall but its not essential, some how in modern cricket most fast bowlers are tall, but still I wont take much away from sreesanth may be the shortest of indian quicks for being fast and effective! It's not, Warne and Murali are small, it would come in handy if the
batsman was eager to sweep you though but apart from that it's probably
a disadvantage considering there's only one decent tall spin bowler.

Their bouncers could also be deadly coming at a great height.

being tall gtes you bounce, and gets you pace aswell in my opinion. The perfect height is Glen mcgraths. I remmeber seeing in an article how a 5'4 indian player was getting speeds of 83 mp/h! now thats crazy. It also depends on the action too. Lasith Malinga is 5'10 and gets 90mp/h. |

Tall bowlers are so lethal on bouncy tracks. Batsmen are never in when facing a pacy guy like harmy or flintoff on a bouncy track, with their height.

i think you should try the malinga action in the orthodox position. Instead of side arm you should bowl strait down but keep the sling like action. I think you will gain more speed than you wouldbowling orthodox. This way you will gain the same accuracy and more speed

well i think being tall doenst helkp spin that much. the ball will go straight down, and you will have to bowl it flat, or toss it up and bowl slow to make it loop.
stick to the pace mate ;) |

I remember seeing Malcolm Marshall rip out Gavaskar's off stump in the (bi?)centennial test at Lords - He was serious quick and normal size too. He did skid it on though which made his short deliveries difficult to play.

Being a tall spinner can have some advantages, if people try and sweep you they have problems as the ball bounces a little more then usual and gets top edges.

Yes being a tall spinner can have some advantages, but mostly disadvantages. Being a tall spinner may get you bounce, but it will make it hard for it to dip low, instead it will bouncer normally if you know what I mean. It is easier to read a tall spinner as the ball takes longer for it to pitch on the ground, and the batmen has time to read the variation of the ball before it pitches on tio the ground. (exception for ANil kumble bcuz hes still great even though he is tall) |

Being tall can also intimidate batsman more than a bowler that is shorter

It is not just the bounce, with a fast bowler when they are bowling full, the ball stays higehr in the air and can gain more movement in the air. Being tall also means you do not have to be as fast because you get the bounce, therefore being tall you do not need to use as much as strength and strain yourself.

I have a few theories on how being a little short could help with pace bowling but i'll leave them in my head untill I try some.

Anil Kumble bolws faster than normal spin bowlers, maybe thats necessary because of his height, we should ask him!

Tall fast bowlers can get wicked lateal movement of the seam because they bang it on the deck. E.g Freddie - his iinswingers are big ! |

They can often get more reverse swing because the ball dteriorates faster because they hit the deck harder.

The bit about McGrath being the perfect height: That si ridiculous. That's like saying you should have Shane Warne's hair because he is the best in the world. No matter what height you are, you could take 500 test wickets if you are good enough. After all, I doubt if anyone will ever have Muralis action even though he's fantastic. |
