South Africa has officially pulled out of the Champions Trophy. It happened on the very day when the ICC cheif i a press conference expressed his satisfaction over the security aarrangements. So what is more likely to happen? CT shifted somewhere else? Or Aus, Eng and NZL following SAF? I foresee CT being shifted somewhere else with Pakistan pulling out.

India have backed Pakistan saying they'll boycott the event if it's moved. Expect England and NZ to follow suit and if the event takes place it'll be 3rd rate instead of just 2nd.

it would never have been top rated to me anyways. I am less concerned about the quality of it. But if it gets moved, the repurcussions (excuse me for the spelling) would be dangerous. South Africa's pull out is a bit surprising to me as they have successfully toured pak before and in much more troubled days than today. Australia will surely follow suit. Sad day here in pakistan I tell you. I have got dozens of text and email messages in the past half hour and fans here are extremely disappointed

It should have been scrapped months ago, it's a waste of a tournament and certainly has caused more trouble than it's worth. It was never going to be held in Pakistan.

i was expecting this to happen, but i must admit that RSA were the least likely team to pull out among the four apprehensive nations. keeping the highly unstable political and safety situation in PAK, i wouldn't blame the CSA for their decision, after all once gone, life cannot come back.
i'm sure the tournament will not be shifted as the PCB now have the backing of the BCCI, and both the nations have made it very clear that they'll pull out if the tourney is moved out of PAK. (and for me it's a delight to see the PCB and the BCCI being together!!!)
i'd like to see the tourney rescheduled to a later date and see if the situation improves in PAK, but certainly in the interest of cricket in PAK and the PAK ckt fans the tournament should not be shifted out of the country, moreover with PAK being one of the co-hosts of WC 2011, it is vital that this tournament stays in the country.

i'm sorry to say this but this "2nd rate waste of a tournament" is far more important for other nations (excluding ENG and AUS) and a lot more interesting than the 5-0 or 4-1 thrashing that AUS dish out to ENG every alternate year.
if any thing needs to be scrapped it should be the length and the frequency of The Ashes, and not the tournamnet which involves top 8 teams in the world competing with each other.

So you want more ODI cricket? Thats all India and Pakistan seem inerested in, CT is nothing more than a money raiser and as I said before - a waste of time.

it's not about raising money from the spectators point of view 143, it's quite obvious that we want to see all the top nations battle it out against each other atleast once in two years and then ofcourse the big world cup as this gives us much more entertainment than say a bilateral series which very often is a one sided affair. |

This event is just a money maker in between World Cups, and there's many people who see it for what it is.
Now that the BCCI has said it wants the tournament in Pakistan, it will be held there because the ICC is scared of upsetting the biggest money spinning country.
Expect England, NZ and AUS to pull out as well because it doesn't matter if people say it's safe in Pakistan and that the security measures are good, the problem is that people are biased and these types of security measures wouldn't be needed if it was safe.
Scrap the Champions Trophy and let the World Cup be the only ODI tournament featuring all the major nations. Then the BCCI will have a slot to put their T20 circus into.
Then we have just 2 world tournaments. 1 for ODI and 1 for T20.
Is it so much to ask for to get rid of some of this ODI cricket???
Hell, we may actually see a few more out and out pace bowlers if we do. Edited by The Tyke - 23 August 2008 at 1:37am |

well finally it appears as if it's all up to the PCB now, ICC themselves will not shift the venue, and without 4 of the 8 nations the event cannot go on, so either the PCB needs to step aside by itself and agree to holding the event elsewhere or the tournament for this year gets scrapped. i think the PCB won't get anything if the trophy gets cancelled so it'll be better if they allow for a shift and host the next edition in 2010. hopefully the situation in the country will be a lot stable by then.

Perhaps they should try to be a bit understanding of the situation and stop taking it as some sort of personal insult, if half the countries don't feel safe playing in Pakistan then it's a pretty major issue. Players aren't complaining about Pakistani people, they are worried about terrorist attacks in Pakistan. So unless all Pakistan people are terrorists they should stop whinging and accept it won't be played there, you can't say on one hand that cricket should come 1st then cry foul when a simple change of country could allow the cricket to go on.

well i don't know how true is this but one of the indian news channels (star news) claims that the champions trophy is likely to be shifted to SLN. now i don't know wheather it is the PCB who are stepping aside, or the ICC is making the move.
i don't think it's about personal insult or anything as such 143, the major concern of the PCB is the future of cricket in PAK, they'll surely be worried about pull outs in the future, like the series against AUS next year (wch is already a rescheduled one) and perhaps even the WC 2011. i think they are desperate to host this event to prove once and for all that PAK is as safe for cricket as any other nation. NZC to announce tomorrow (25th) if its going or not. Seems a little ridiculous to announce it then, because it may have been canned by then anyway.

the tournament has been postponed to october 2009, the ICC had no other option really, although this is a fair enough decision, it's still a huge dissapointment for plenty of cricket fans like me who were very eager to see some quality cricket being played. what this also means is that the entire month of september will be without international cricket and guess what PAK's next cricket assignment will now be in JAN 09, against their new found friends IND
even before the CT, PAK will have to schedule the ODI series against AUS and if that can go well i guess their problems will be solved.

NZ will have just come off a series against SL, in SL so we should be used to the general pitch type, which works in our favour. Then guess what, we tour there in the December 2 months later |

well, hopefully you'll be touring there NZ_Fast, coz as of now nothing can be certain about cricket in PAK, which really is a pity and the worst part is that there is not a damn thing PCB can do about it.
thankfully for pakistan they have plenty of cricket next year not just at home but also away, they can be sure of hosting IND, and playing in the ICC world T20 in ENG, and they also have away tours of SLN and AUS. the home series' are against AUS, NZL and the CT which will all be subject to security issues.
quite surprisingly, this year they didn't had even a single away series!!!

Implies that Australia wont be touring Pakistan for the scheduled bi lateral series in 2009? It is easy for you guys to absorb that. But here, we Pakistan cricket fans are deprived of quality cricket at home. We hardly had any good cricket last year and this year is going to be even worse.
Ideally though, I would have wanted CT to be shifted to some other place and Pakistan to boycott the series. Fans here are seriously disappointed. I am no ODI fan but many here in our country are. And I do beleive, being an ODI fan is no sin or something to be ashamed of. People badly wanted the bigger teams to come. What worries me most is that we wont be having any quality cricket here any time soon Edited by zuhair_abbasi - 25 August 2008 at 5:52am |

Better to cancel the event than play it without the world's two best
one day sides. Postponing until next year means Australia and
England will play nonstop for the entire summer . I foresee both sides
sending understrength squads because of fatigue.

I actually dont see that happening Sledge. I dont see them coming to pak. This will be tested and confirmed when Australias turn to tour pakistan in 2009 comes. They wont tour. ICC has just delayed. Well, I understand the tournament was a waste, but the majority here loves that format and they wanted the big teams home

We are not having any elections next year mate. Not till 2013. Our politics has long been like this, but this should not have any impact on the cricket.

Poor decision this in my book really. It was always on the cards that many of the teams were never going to tour Pakistan so the tournament should have been schedule to take place in Sri Lanka.
Next year will mean a hassle for the likes of Australia as they will finish in England in mid September and has to take on India in October I'm sure, or November.
Now, we'll have two major tournaments come 2011 and I think that's plain useless. That would mean not much series competition being involved. Or would they still carry on the next champions trophy (the one after 2009) in 2010 as I think they are scheduled for every 2 years? Edited by spin wizard - 25 August 2008 at 2:35pm |
