The first of these matches is halfway through, and England have rattled up 370 for 7 in their 50 overs. Most notable is Craig Kieswetter's score of 143 at the top of the order, all but guaranteeing him an opener's slot for the first ODI.

He's made so few runs on his chances so far it is hard to see them sticking with them when they have the choice of another South African instead

Keisweeter cut his teeth at the same school as Gibbs - Bishops. That he was dropped 4 times detracts somewhat , but there's no doubt that he's brought some much needed oomph to the top of the order. His ball striking is fantastic and I see him playing as a specialist batsman and Denly will have to return to the ranks. Exciting times ahead and if Stephen Moore makes runs quickly from the start of the county season , what chances that 4 of the top 5 of England were all South African bred ?

Michael Lumb will probably be in at least one of the limited overs sides before this year is out too

Doubtless that is the connection, zuhair.
There are plenty more South African-born players we can pick yet - Greg Smith, Chris Meaker, Jacques Rudolph for example! I'm sure there are more. |

He might have to wait another year. Let's not forget we could pick both Morgan and Joyce to at least ensure a non-English team. Boyd Rankin is on the Performance Programme too. Throw in a couple of promising Scotsmen (Berrington, Goudie, perhaps) and voilá!
Claude Henderson is now a British citizen as well. |

Oh well, I think these things are a good step in helping to eliminate racism in that more different kind of people are being found closer together, which can only do the world some good. This is the beauty of sports, it pulls people from all over together.
I'm not saying you should just pick someone for that reason but more saying that it still have its advantages.

Well that was a thriller! A real chance for Bangladesh to put one over on England for the first time , but they reckoned without the ice cool Morgan ! He's transformed the English side from plodders to , well ...er , walkers now! :) Tremendous knock , his ability to find the fence or clear it is terrific , I hope he rubs off on the others.
Kieswetter looked a complete plonker though - he faced two balls , played the same stroke to both and the result of those strokes was identical except the first one didn't get caught. I've no problem with a positive approach , but engaging the brain and settling down might be a good start to the innings. Unlucky Bangladesh , well done Morgan and Prior - fine effort. Oh one last thing - I've been told it's a sporting gesture to applaud when someone makes a hundred - try it next time you Bangladeshi supporters - you just showed yourselves up as a bunch of sore losers. I think there was a section of crowd that applauded the effort - but yes, the overall response was disappointing - reminded me of a Kolkatta crowd of yesteryears.
I think it won't be long before Morgan is seen in whites for England - he is too good a player to miss test cricket. |

Morgan himself hadn't realised he had got to 100, maybe it was the same for the crowd

I got to admit, I didn't see Morgan as this good a player when I first saw him but lately he's played superb. His strokes are very clean and goes about his business in hardly any hurry but yet he can still sky-rocket his scoring rate when needed. He's added much more quality to what was otherwise a poor ODI team along with the winless Windies. Yeah, Graeme Swann too has been huge for England.

Ever since the first time I saw Morgan, he was doing well but I agree with SW, I never expected so much from him. And I think Pietersen really needs to sort out his batting. I'm not sure if I already posted that and it was deleted. If it was, then well I guess I just wasn't too sure.

KP cant and wont change his batting style matey - he is might effective with the way he bats and there is no reason why he should change it.

The slow left armers are getting to KP and it's difficult to understand why. He's been successful against all forms of bowling (like all quality batsmen) and surely it's only a matter of time before he sorts himself out. That he got out to a part-timer must have been particularly galling - I expect him to score big in the upcoming test.
Other observations - well Trott came back strongly after a poor finish to the South African series and that ton could wells ecure the vacant opening birth alongside Cook. Carberry might have blown the one chance to impress unless the English bowlers can get through the Bangladeshis very quickly this morning. Tredwell did himself no harm at all , although two right handed off spinners surely won't make the trip to Australia later this year. But well done to him , he should make his test debut on Friday. Good news ahead of the test is that both Onions and Broad bowled in the nets and look likely to start on Friday. Is it the end of the road for Sidebottom ? I think it might well be - he's a liability nowadays , sad but true , his body has finally given out on him. Edited by Sledger - 09 March 2010 at 5:14am |

What's wrong with Alastair Cook? Why on earth did he bowl and what happened to his figures 5-0-111-0!!

Declaration bowling, chaps - England wanted to bat so offered Bangladesh some easy runs. Cook and Carberry were basically bowling slow, loopy off-breaks which were being hammered to all parts.

Agree but still is a pretty horrible bowling analysis JP - must be top on the list of conceding 100 runs this early

It works both ways - I'm pretty sure Cook has a first-class century (or a half-century) when he took advantage of some tasty bowling a few years back.
At least this match isn't first-class, so no-one's records are really affected. |

I've seen that before in county cricket , someone (JP will know who!) scored a ton off 20-odd balls! Because every ball was a slow full toss , the powers that be decided that the record for fastest county championship century would not stand.
What I took to be significant was the promotion in the batting order of Bresnan and Tredwell . That suggested to me that they both will start , come Friday. Edited by Sledger - 10 March 2010 at 7:30am |

The most recent case was a county game between Leic and Essex where the skippers agreed a run chase on the final day of a meaningless end of season game. Off the fearsome bowling of Paul Nixon and Darren Robinson, Cook made 66 off 32 balls and Mark Pettini 114 off 29.
I agree with Sledge's thoughts regarding Bresnan and Tredwell being given batting time. Finn appears to have jumped ahead of Plunkett and Wright for the 3rd seamer's berth, assuming Broad makes it: if not a heftier re-think might be needed to balance the batting a touch. |

He's been well thought of for a while but seemed to stagnate a little last year, so it is encouraging that his work on the winter has evidently helped him kick on
