Now this topic doesn't concern Gough's brilliant bowling and reasoning for him to be playing for england (which he should be ). It concerns his batting position after 6 overs. When Essex lose a wicket in the first 6 overs Darren Gough is sent in at number 3. This has yielded mixed results.

Can anyone shed any light or reasoning behind this!?

So he can have a big swing and try to take advantage of the fielding restrictions is one explanation.

To pander to the man's gigantic ego would be another.

Maybe Clobs , but when batting 2nd it means the old man can leave and get tucked up into bed early too!

Yeah they send in a pinch hitter, to try and smack it and get quick runs. When it comes off it's a good idead, but surely in twenty twenty, all batsman just go out to smash it?

yeah but you wont convince me that darren gough can score quicker then any specialist batsmen. If he can, the Essex have a horrifying top order - which isn't true.

Even the most defensive of batsmen can hit 6s, im sure dravid can! just he has the mental strength to know that it's risky and shouldn't be tried often.

The thing is though, Gough can slog as good as any top order batsmen, but can't really nudge the singles when the field goes out.

So they use him in the first 6 as an extra number three, he slogs, goes out better batsman comes in and finishes it off.

SImple, apart from when Goughie gets a duck.

Yeah, it seems pointless really.

Especially as he's now said he's going out there to build an innings, not just pinch hit.

So he just slows up the scoring rate in the first 6

I would understand more if he really did come in and swipe at everything untill he got out cheaply. If he got 18 of 3 balls and got out then fine. But he doesn't, he stays there too long to be a pinch hitter.

He did quite well last night v Sussex, hit 25 off about 20 balls, the real hero though was Ronnie Irani with 100 not out.

If you describe Gough as a good batsman , just what will you call players like Ponting , Dravid , Inzamam , Pietersen . Yousef , Kallis , Hussey......

.....must be plenty of pretty impressive superlatives!!

That's the job he is sent in to do. They want him to get boundaries. Even though I have seen him bat for Essex in number 3 a few times (especially as Sky always play Essex matches!) and most of the runs he scores are edges that go to third man or shots that go into the air and land just where there is no fielders. He is quite amusing to watch as a batsman.

Having looked into it again I found that in his last series of ODI's "the bestest one day bowla eva" took a whopping TWO wickets whilst being carted round the park at almost 6.5 an over - I am sure that wasn't his fault either....

Plunkett is young and will improve , Gough is old , slow and a liability.

Gough is still consistant for Essex. Plunkett is a liability for England....although he will improve.

D-Day for The Dazzler today as England name their provisional 30 man squad for the ICC Trophy. Obviously , if Gough is left out of this list then he can spend a lot more time on his dancing!

We should run a sweep on how long it takes Sky commentators tomorrow to say "he loves the big occasion" when Gough is bowling.

I'll give it about 15 seconds...

Too many kent games all of which have been a bore! Darren Gough will not batt/slog as easily as he has done in County cricket, when he plays International cricket!
