Anyone here a hockey fan? I mean field hockey. Nearly all the test playing teams have decent enough hockey teams

Jonty Rhodes was a decent player apparently!
Field hockey is quite strong in Australia, the Kookaburras are a top side and the women's team has achieved gold a few times in the Olympics and Commonwealth Games too. I hear it's the national sport of India and extremely popular in Pakistan. You're right, quite a few cricket nations play quite well. Pakistan, India, South Africa, Netherlands (not that great a cricket nation!), New Zealand, Australia, etc |

Jonty Rhodes missed the Barcelona Olympics by a whisker! South Africa have a pretty decent team too. English team is on the rise again - they once were a power house in the game. NZL team is also quite good. Hockey is also the national game of Pakistan mate - and love it. sadly, just like cricket, there has not been any international hockey in Pakistan ever since the SRL team attack.

Yep and I think Jonty was selected for Atlanta too Zuhair! It's too hard these days to commit to two sports, they used in the past when these sport weren't professional. Botham played a LOT of football.
Ellyse Perry, the young Australian women's all rounder also plays for the national women's side in football too! |

Thought this might as well be merged into its own thread rather than get lost among the footballers.
I've played hockey since I was about 11 (had a few years out of the game during and after university) but I did once play against current England international Simon Mantell in a game for my school. Didn't get near him, mind. |

Good news for India-Pakistan hockey lovers. India most likely to break the impasse and tour pakistan later this year.
Not an avid follower of the game, but an India-Pakistan dual will in all likelihood get me hooked in. I've believe India has been getting the better off their next-door rivals in their last few face-offs. |

Yes Indian hockey is on the rise and it would be one fascinating series. Hockey is widely followed in Pakistan and the series will receive massive audience. Last time we played a bilateral series with India - we beat them 4-1 in the 5 match series. Bring it on I say.

I know about the sports, the objective of the game but know nothing about which team or player is the best etc. Nonetheless, it is sports so all is well.

So the Azlan Shah cup has started - with major teams participating. Pakistan comprehensively beat the New Zealand 4-2. England played brilliant hockey in their win over the Malaysians. India would be disappointed to have lost a close game to Korea.
Today's big game England v India. I expect India to win 2-1. |

I played a little back at primary school, never followed the sport though, but did ice hockey.
They both seem quite fun, and would love to play either sometime

Not at all matey. Korea is by far the superior Asian team - they are ranked 5th in the world whereas the Indians are 10th.

England beat Pakistan 3-2, what a thriller that was. India did pretty well to play a draw versus the Champions Australia. Pakistan play Australia today and I can't see Pakistan winning. Looks like it is going to be an England- Australia final

Was a thrilling match - Pakistan exceeded expectations. Was a well fought game and Australia had the last laugh. Pakistan hockey is surely on the rise and I am absolutely thrilled about it!! Next in line is an India Pakistan bilateral series this year - I am looking forwards.
