I'm not doubting the ability of their all rounders and keeper Sledge.
What I mean is that if the 3 specialists fail then all the hopes fall on their shoulders to make the score as well as the pressure of bowling.
I'd have been tempted to have the extra batsman as a Plan B. But then again this is the South African selectors we're talking about. They believe in Plan A only, as is evident by their choice to lack a spinner or 2.

That's been the South African approach since readmission in
1991. You're dead right , SA have a single battle plan when in
the field - there are no emergency contingencies.

very good opening match. gayle and gibbs played very well. crowd was superb. I have only problem with camera work. I think camera man had a problem to see the ball.

I noticed that too and that's quite unusual for this part of the world - they're normally top class.
The other irritating aspect of the television coverage was the lack of updates on the batsmen's scores. I kept wondering just how many Gibbs had after he'd passed 50. Anyone else have the samegripe ? |

On the plus side, first indications are that they have engaged a far higher quality of commentator than the C-listers that showed up at the World Cup

I didn't have to worry about commentary or camera angles while watching the game live. What a match though! The atmosphere in the stadium was mind-blowing.
Pity about the bowling though. Both SA and Windies gave away extras like they didn't care. And the fielding by the Windies was a real tragedy. The tournament looks set to be a real scorcher though. I'll be back at the Wanderers on Monday again. Don't know who'll be playing yet though. |

. Ok Samhache....maybe I was too harsh in the past about Gayle. But I still strongly believe that he is a hitter.....and not so much a classy batsman. He does NOT have much foot movement at all. He just hits the ball hard and it goes because he is so strong. However, it was an AMAZING innings I will admit. Sadly I did not see it because I was in school. Let's hope he repeats his performance next match for the windies sake!

Chris gayle, what an absolute superb innings. First lad on planet earth to score a ton in a 20/20 match.
Ah mean, Gayle he hit some smally six, some bigger six as well, and some monster sixes as well. He crack one 101M, oh man that really fantastic.
SA may have won but who cares Gayle did something special and is main fact is I saw it LIVE!!

Yes fellas, Gayle played the best knock I have ever seen in a 2020 game! Such clean hitting and he hit some real monster blows on the SA bowlers. That was such a lovely innings and it's a shame he had to end up on the losing side. I hope that's something for some of the no-brainers out there who say some people don't win enough match for their side. Gayle knock was out of the top drawer but because of poor fielding and bowling, the Windies lost so I hope that makes some of them keep their mouth quiet!
Smith is a real gritty player and that was real guts to stay out there and play on. Gibbs played some fantastic strokes too but the Windies bowling of gifting wides like crazy and dropping the 2 man who made all the runs was the main difference between the sides. I liked the hostility Powell bowled with and Edwards bowling was terrific other than the wides he bowled.
I have to slam Sarwan's captaincy for that match too! Why did he bowl Dwayne Smith after a horrendous first over??? Why wasn't Gayle used??? (I don't know if Gayle wasn't fit to bowl) Why did he take Edwards out of the attack when he was on fire to Gibbs who was the danger man at that time??? It was simple, Edwards should have been used to peg back the runs and make them try a shot too many against the other bowlers!!
Overall, Windies was poor other than Gayle and Edwards, none of the sides bowled enough short ball in my view - they were causing problems fellas - and SA batting attack looks well set!! Edited by spin wizard - 12 September 2007 at 9:33pm |

Some may say that SA only have 3 specialist batsmen in the side, but if you look at the domestic Pro20 competition, you will find that the squad is full of names that have dominated that scene. Absolutely murderous sloggers like Van der Wath and Albie Morkel, not to mention the capable all-rounders like Vernon Philander, and Morne Morkel who can slog a few too. I think the only doubt in terms of batting may be Makhaya.
Also, SA's bowling may seem one-dimensional without a world-class spinner, but I doubt it's gonna hurt them much with the batting prowess that they have. |

successful teams in T20 cricket have a mixture of bowling at their disposal - that doesn't necessarily mean spinners, but it does mean a range of options from outright strike bowlers down to dibbly dobbers who wobble it around at 70mph. We saw last night Australia's quick men suffering as the batsmen were glad of the pace on the ball, and a good batting side should be able to do the same against South Africa with it's group of similar bowlers, which doesn't require the batsmen to change or rethink strategies as they would do when a spinner or whatever is brought into the action.

So the West Indies have compiled 164 against Bangledesh - Chris Gayle going from the sublime to the ridiculous by bagging a 3 ball duck here, and the Windies will be grateful for Dwayne Smith's mad assault at the end blitzing 29 from 7 deliveries. Hugely impressive figures from Syed Rasal - 4-1-10-1, again supporting the theory that dribbly seamers are more effective than pace bowlers at this game.

Well done to Bangladesh! You totally outplayed the Windies today.
West Indies makes the first exit of the tournament. Time to select a new captain. |

I don't think they have many other options do they? I also wouldn't like 20-20 form to decide any players future, it's a game designed purely for entertainment.

The same could have been said about the 50 over game a few years back. Most players are still learning to adapt technically as well as mentally. And there's been talk of having teams play more 20/20 matches and less 50 over matches |

A few years back?
There will be talk of more while ever it turns over the $$$, after all Macdonalds is all over the world now, people want fast, they hate waiting.
How many players, if given the choice of only being able to play one version of the game, would chose 20-20 over test cricket?
