The commentators here on radio are saying that England should have declared overnight the other night and declared about 50/60 runs behind Pakistan and given themselves enough time to bowl out pakistan ,and in the event of not bowling them out and going for the win, then having the faith on that Road of a pitch,to bat out the last day or few sessions that they would have had to do...Does anyone agree that England should have been trying to win the series and gambled on maybe losing this test for the chance of winning and securing the series next test, which they can only tie now. This is presumming they last the overs today, which they should on that flat track.
Not saying they are right or wrong but the cricket comentators here reckon if England want to be world number 1 they have to back themselves to win thses close tests,,,Maybe easy to say from behind a microphone, but what do others feel ,should they have had a crack by declaring and giving themselves time and backing themselves to bowl out Pak and then chase down the runs ,or settle on drawing the series even though the ranking indicates they are the better side??????

I don't agree John. It was important that England got as close to Pakistan's 1st innings total as possible. After that , give it everything in trying to bowl them out for a gettable total.
Hindsight is wonderful , but I don't think the comments are fair. Remember everyday overs have been lost to bad light - that's what comes of playing cricket in winter. Let's not forget Pakistan have played well and haven't collapsed like the Pakistan of old - it's been a good contest. .......then there's that bloody wicket!!!

Yea, and England have collapsed yet again in their second inning but thanks to Pieterson and Flintoff that they have drawn the match.
Pakistan may have collapsed in this series but they have always come back quite strongy. Take today for example, they were at 183 for 6 and managed to get to 268 for 9 declared. Then Rana and Shoaib got early wickets and had England in trouble. At the end England managed a draw. |

Pete, that was about the generall concensous here from radio callers, the general thread was why should England give Pakistan a chance to set a total and dictate the game, but Dean Jones was adament that England had to have belief in themselves,to be fair to him he wasnt saying it in hindsight he said it on day 4 start that it looks headed for a draw but if england decalre 100 behind,or i think he said 50/60 and let Pakisatn set a total, but, BUT BLOODY, BUT,that was all fine as long as they bowled Pakistan out cheaply as on the other hand they could have batted and set an impossible total and england would have been on a wallopping to nothing wouldnt they? Thats Dean Jones though ,very controversial and always gets big differences in talkback on any subject,,today it was west indies should be with bangl, kenya,Zimbab,in a second division and winner of that group plays some or bottom of the top group,as he says they and the others are forcing people to go away from cricket and not draw people to cricket?????west indies supporters are ringing up in arms hahahaha, gonna kill him,,,,man,,,hahaha

It would take a bold captain to do it, wasn't Warne advocating Australia doing a similar thing at the Oval? I don't think Vaughan wanted to take the risk, and with hindsight it's probably a good thing with the way our middle order went missing. And as for his two division idea, has he been visiting this forum recently - looks like he's nicked the basis of my sim!! West Indies are poor right now, but not that poor. |

Deano always has something to say mate!! I'd much rather listen to him than some of these non-entities like Bob Willis , Tony Grieg and even Ian Botham whose endless stream of platitudes drives me to distraction! How many times in a broadcast can you get away with "great shot!" "no foot movement there!" "that got what it deserved" "4 as soon as it left the bat" etc etc etc etc etc etc
I feel like a good rant this morning!!!

No Disagree barmy, with jones you will always get a truthful(HIS VIEW) opinion, and m8 i have heard him say there are about 4 to 5 duds in west indies who wouldnt play if they had anything better, also said Inziman is a ogar, and a spoilt kid,now this is on TV,come on ,wouldnt you rather someone giving something like that with passion it invokes than someone saying ,top shot, and blah blah blah,,,,but barmy i agree with Mathews, although he is opinionated,i dont like his opinions much. I think on sbs you only got the 2 in the breaks but not on commentary. But anyway to each there own and i can fully understand people who dont think that he is your cuppa tea,Just out of curiousty ,who are your fav commentators.dont dare say darren lehmann
