Should Justin Kemp continue playing for the Proteas or should he be dropped from the squad?
I for one believe that he is simply Shahid Afridi on a lower scale. Hitting big sixes and scoring super-quick runs once in every twenty matches does not warrant a spot in the side. His bowling is pretty lacklustre too.
Smith: Please drop Kemp from the side.

He was effective against England a couple of years back, but latterly SA's tactics have changed it looks to me. Previously they used to look to keep wickets intact so they could launch Kemp in the final 10 overs, but now they go hard at it right from the off so it may well be he feels under pressure when there is already a tempo established

I completely disagree to the fact that he is like Shahid Afridi .He has played some match winning innings the one being his 100 against India lately .Otherwise I wll agree wth Clobs .

That's exactly what I mean by "playing like Afridi". He has his occasional match-winning innings, but they don't come too often. Just like Afridi.
Remember Afridi's recent match-winning innings against SA?

You need to make that decision and stick with it. If you are happy for that match wining performance every now and then good luck to you and he will serve his purpose. Personally, their line up is strong enough and with Pollock and especially Boucher, they do not need another hitter down there who's bowling is suspect. For the contribution of late i would prefer some kid with potential being nursed through to see if he blossoms

Judge the player not by their stats, but by their opposition.

He's way too inconsistent. He's failed far more times than he's succeeded, and he's trying too hard to be a batsman, not a pinch-hitter, which is why he's there in the first place.
SA have plenty more batsmen who can deliver on a regular basis. They only put Kemp into the squad to play the role Klusener once played. But I don't see him getting quickfire 50's in successive matches the way Klusener used to.

It's all well and good saying leave him out , but who would you replace
him with? The squad they've taken hasn't got another low order
biffer , which suggests to me that his place isn't under threat.
He's capable of destoying any attack and his temperament is sound - he could well win a match from a precarious position in this world cup. |

He certainly could, but it's looking less likely these days.
If he's not doing so well with the bat, we could always take him out and put a specialist bowler in there to liven up the so-called "depth" that the squad is lacking. Robin Petersen perhaps would fit in nicely, and may contribute far more than Kemp has. I mean we currently have batting all the way down to Hall at #9, so the batting isn't in that much jeopardy. (middle-order collapses aside)

With SA playing in Guyana , Petersen could well be the answer. Hall has
performed nicely and won't get the chop , so Kemp is the one likely to
make way.
Every article I've read about the Guyana strip makes me shiver Mojo - if the pitch is as bad as being reported the matches there could be farcical. SA are to play three games there aren't they? If that's right they're at a serious disadvantage. |

Well, we've been able to claw ourselves out of tough situations before. Even with serious disadvantages. And if Smith and AB keep batting the way they have been so far, nothing's beyond reach for them.
by the way, I didn't mean that they should drop Hall... Not a chance of that! But they can afford to drop Kemp because we've got batting all the way down to Hall, and the team can do without Kemp's roll-of-the-dice batting.
Drop Kemp, choose Petersen. We might finally be able to clean up the tail with our bowlers. Smith's spin-bowling isn't really making an impression. Edited by Mojo - 27 March 2007 at 10:16am |
