A fairly self-explanatory topic, but I thought I'd kick it off with some of my views.
I think the most overrated cricketer going around at the moment is Mitchell Johnson. He lives off the hype of one good performance a series, and then fails to maintain any pressure for many games at a time. I also think his batting for has been atrocious and he has gone from being the best no. 8 in the world, to a regular tail ender. Anyone else you can think of? |

Harbhajan - Nothing more than a containing spinner nowadays. His average is poor for a guy who plays a lot on turning wickets in India after the batting order piles on the runs. He is decent enough at T20s but ODIs he is no longer effective and I think he is long past his prime in Tests. He has been dropped so I guess selectors are finally beginning to recognise how his form has dipped but he has been overrated for a long time in my eyes.
Also, a lot of the keeper-batsmen are very overrated. McCullum, Boucher, Haddin. They all can do the job behind the stumps and I suppose if you just want a keeper to bat a little bit then they are all fine. Compared, however, to their contemporaries in Prior and Dhoni, they are pretty poor. It may be down to the real scarcity of quality wicket-keepers who can also bat properly in their respective countries but they are all overrrated. |

Harbhajan was on my mind when I made the thread - I was hoping he'd be 2nd on the list and thankfully you're on the ball. He's tried hard at becoming an all rounder but has forgotten focusing on his bowling.
I'd definitely add Prasanna Jayawardene to that list, they tout him as the best gloveman going around and the number of stumpings he missed against the Aussies in the last series was extremely unsatisfactory. Maybe there is a trend on the whole keeper/batsman thing - I think Dinesh Ramdin was was overrated for a long, long time by the Windies and remember when England were playing Geraint Jones? Raina and Yuvraj are also right up there on the overrated list and shouldn't be playing test cricket. |

I agree with Mitchell Johnson, most overrated yes, Raina is another one for me, I mean I really do not rate him much, he succeeds only on flat wickets and that too in ODI's he is not much of a class player. I rate Yuvi, I think he is much better than Raina although he hasn't really made the most of his talent in Tests. I rate Harbhajan too although I don't like him at all, but I think he has done enough over the years to justify the hype around him.

Definitely think there's a trend with the keeper-batsmen Mikey. I agree with those other keepers you mentioned. Sangakkara was also overrated as a Test batsman while being a keeper - he only averaged 40 in Tests with the gloves on. He averages 72 playing as a pure batsman so he's actually underrated as a pure batsman in Tests, which says something given that he is held in fairly high esteem as a classical batsman.
Did anyone actually rate Raina and Yuvraj in Tests though? Don't think they were ever rated highly. Maybe when they first came on the scene but as their deficiencies became exposed, almost everyone barring the selectors didn't rate them at all. Also, Steve Smith is sort of overrated. His leg-spin is nothing special and very hittable and his batting leaves a lot to be desired yet he is frequently touted as a really talented all-rounder. |

Now then, now then! Just leave Mitchell alone, he's a great laugh..............................................AT
He gives the 'Barmy Army' plenty to sing about.

Agreed with BP, Steve Smith barely gets a bowl and bats at 7. I haven't quite understood his purpose in the side. I'm sure he has talent, but do we ever get to see it?
