Some people, undoubtedly, are blessed with many skills! Some cricketers excel in other sports, some excel in more than one dimension within cricket and others have done well in business or the academic field.
I'll have a go at a few. Ricky Ponting and Greg Blewett are known for basically being professional quality golfers and from what I understand Nathan Hauritz is also quite good (probably should have pursued golf over cricket if you ask me!). Stuart Clark studied law while playing cricket for Australia and I know Sangakkara did the same. Also, there have been quite a few accomplished cricketers who were also physiotherapists, Martin Love springs to mind. A.B. de Villiers I hear excelled in tennis, rugby and golf.... he's not just a top batsman, but a dynamic fieldsman AND wicketkeeper. Any others? |

C.B. Fry was captain of England at cricket, played football for England, represented the Barbariabns at rugby, and
became the joint-holder of the world long-jump record. He was also a scholar, novelist and teacher, not to mention that according to legend, he declined an invitation to become King of Albania.

I have read such stories! Pure insanity! What a fulfilling life!
Well that's definitely the best example of a multi talented cricketer. I can't remember the guys name, but there was a fast bowler from NZ who played ODI cricket and who also played for the All Blacks. This was quite recent... his name is at the tip of my tongue, just can't remember. |

One name that I mentioned in the other thread is Jonty Rhodes - played hockey at international level and was selected twice to play in the Olympics - but never played.

Man This guy C.B.Fry doesn't sound human. He was a multi-talent human-being not merely a multi-talented cricketer. Respect!!!
Anil Kumble And Javagal Srinath were Qualified Engineers I hear. Yuvraj was a talent skater as a kid and had won many accolades and prizes in them, until his father threw them away and asked him to focus on cricket. |

I'm a multi talented Cricketer as well. I play Cricket, can type on the keyboard at lightening speed (60 Words per minute on average) and can do Accounting and Auditing as well as webpage design and going deep down into the webpage and doctoring the codes. I also drive as wel, and quite good too. Sometimes I am told to take up race car driving but hey, those speeds will scare the living daylight out of me.

Pretty decent topic! Got quite a few posts for my first thread. Nice to see some good contributions, picked up some top names so far.
It's nice to put a personality, outside of cricket (a positive spin, not the negative media rubbish), on these players. Some of the guys we look up to or really enjoy watching. C.B Fry Jeff Wilson Jonty Rhodes Ponting Stuart Clark AD de Villiers Yuvraj A couple of Indian engineers ![]() Anyone else? I know VVS was going to study medicine, Chaminda Vaas was going to be a Catholic Priest, Stephen Waugh excelled in soccer at a young age; Warne was a budding Aussie rules player; Brett Lee is a budding musician; my mate went to university with Brad Hogg who was taking a Commerce degree at Curtin Uni in Perth! I suppose these examples are pretty average, I mean... lets find some TRULY multi talented folks!! Looks like the crop of cricketers that are top class also excelled in other areas. What does that say about us? Cricket is an intelligent sport maybe? Reflects well on us ![]() Edited by Mikey - 29 April 2011 at 6:15pm |

Playing Cricket can train some of your senses very well. For instance, being a batsman against fast bowlers will help you develop very fast instincts. Cricketers are generally more well built in the upper body than footballers

Justin Vaughan played for the kiwis during 90s was a Doctor.
Sanjay Manjarekar had a music album out with a big Indian music label where he re-sung some classics. Vinod Kambli tried his luck in acting unsuccessfully so cant say he was multi-talented. Navjot singh sidhu and Md. Azharuddin have been elected as member of parliament and are currently serving their terms, again cant say if winning an election due to the popularity they have earned in the game people are crazy about would make them multi-talented, although Sidhu has a very successful career as an orator, show judge on small screen and is offered millions just to blabber out the verbal diarrhea he gets on the first chance he is provided to speak a word and is more famous for his English. Hansie Cronje i heard was equally good in rugby as he was in cricket at one time and his once team mate represented South Africa at some level as a Javelin thrower, his bowling action also looked like he's taking a stride to throw javelin as he used to run to bowl ....any guesses yet,he was Fanie de villiers. Lara had some skills with football where an earlier master with bat Viv Richards actually played football for his country. the list could go on an on..... |

Ted Dexter could have become a professional golfer , he was that good. Herschelle Gibbs was international class at athletics (his Dad was 100yard record holder in SA) , rugby and football! Many of my SA pals saw Gibbs and said he was a fantastic fly half and would definitely have been a Springbok superstar. Herschelle himself said he preferred to play football to all of the other activities but his father convinced him to take up cricket - mainly because he could play for a far greater length of time.

Numerous cricketers have played football professionally here - most notably Denis Compton, who played for Arsenal and the unofficial England team during the war, plus the likes of Ian Botham and Arnie Sidebottom.

This is the 'Quote Unquote' on the home page of cricinfo:
'The way you hit the ball, you're wasting your time playing cricket.' Nine-time golf Major winner Gary Player believes that former Australia captain Ricky Ponting is plying his wares in the wrong profession From what I have read and seen, Ponting is a seriously good golfer. Could play professionally, I mean, many players on tour are much older than he and Ponting obviously has the competitive edge. Will be interesting to see if he plays golf in his retirement or plays IPL! Or both! (Warne plays IPL and plays poker ).I hear Darren Gough is going to run for the House of Commons in Britain, or something to that effect. Is this true also? Apparently he's a fair dancer too! |

I think Gough was invited to put himself forward to stand for parliament but declined. Both Gough and Mark Ramprakash won the Strictly Come Dancing (I think that is what it is called) TV series, the latter apparently having been very good indeed at it.

If only Ramps could must more than 2 test tons! I'm sure he'd scrap his dancing medal for a few more contributions at test level. Seriously what a waste!
With regard to Gough, is he a serious candidate, or was it just an idea floating around? I know over here in Australia, Stephen Waugh was tipped to take over former Prime Minister John Howard's seat (which was obviously a Federal lower house seat! A big deal I must say). It didn't suffice, however former tennis star John Alexander actually ran for that seat and won and is now in the House of Representatives at Federal Level. Edited by Mikey - 04 May 2011 at 3:05pm |
