You can't judge a player just by his stats. Yes. But stats definetly gives us few details about performances.
I was thinking of a new stats for bowlers. Currently they project the average and strike rate. One of the things ignored with this is the quality of the batsman they have dismissed. A wicket of Viv Richards by giving away 40 runs is much more worthy and requires more skill than getting 3 wickets of Holding, Garner and Roberts for 20.
How about having another element of stats which sums up the batting average of all the batsmen dismissed by the bowler and dividing by the number of wickets.
If you dismiss Richards twice, the parameter would be 50.23+50.23/2 = 50.23.
If you have dismissed Holding and Garner, it would be 13.78+12.44/2 = 13.11.
We know batsman's average itself may not reflect everything, but atleast it gives us a fair idea if he has got 80% victims as tail enders.
Any thoughts?

Lesser the bowling average implies better the bowler. In short bowling average means runs conceeded per wicket.

So your new method would really confuse people Kiran.

If your new parameter is defined as "Average of Averages of dismissed batsman" , then it would make sense, but again it won't give a correct picture. You can't penalise great bowlers when they dismiss a tailender, Isn't it Kiran?

EDIT:Then think of a scenario where quality spinner comes only after fall of early wickets. They would never get good statistics (as per you method). Many times I have seen Daniel Vettori bowling only after fall of 5-6 wickets in NZ pitches.

Don't underestimate me that much Raj Wink. I know about the bowling average.

I was talking about a new stat all-together leaving bowling average as it is. You are right about someone coming after 5 wickets are down and getting the remaining 5. It is exactly the scenario I was thinking. Bowlers who does that more often could be sometimes overrated by just looking at their average.

It would be interesting to get this stats for any two bowlers and see how it may look like. No other better option than Warne and Murali Smile

Did a quick avg for five bowlers (3 spinners and 2 fast bowlers) of the same era.

Wasim Akram - 26.54
Waqar Younis - 27.87
Muraltharan - 28.56
Shane Warne - 29.43
Anil Kumble - 30.23

Surprisingly, the fast bowlers has lesser number compared to the spinners. Probably they were used to finish the tail more than the spinners. Among the three spinners, Kumble has the highest number probably because, India lacked 2 top quality fast bowlers and he had to get the top order batsman more often than not.

I know Kiran that you knew very well about bowling average.I wasn't doubting your cricket knoweledge.

I just wrote it again as I wanted to bring out the how much the new higher average (as suggested) would really confuse with the existing one which is exact opposite.

Spinners of the 60's and 70's.
EAS Prasanna - 27.86
BS Bedi - 28.84
Underwood - 31.49.
These are excellent stats considering the fact that, the average of top order batsman in those days generally used to be in 40's.
