My Name is Patrick, I live in the USA When watching directv last year, they had a free preview of cricket from india. That got me watching. I knew nothing about the sport other than the name. Now I know a little more, but not a whole lot, hope to learn here, I'm sure I will, I sent away for a cricket dictionary and will call directv this morning to order the cricket ticket package. It's a little expensive but cheaper than trying to go overseas to watch cricket. I have some questions: In cricket, does everyone on the team get a turn to bat? and I saw a guy hit the wickets once and stuff went flying off them, did he score for his team? I did not get to see if he did as someone called me and took my attention away. Is the ball in cricket made from leather? That should help me out for now. Thanks.

Hey Pmac, great to see some interest from guys in the states. You guys could put some amazing cricket teams on the park if you got some good baseball players to give the game a try. To try and answer some of your questions, yes, a cricket ball is made of leather. Also, there are several different versions of the game, with test match cricket being played over 5 days, with two innings available to each side within the alloted 5 days, one day cricket, where each team bats for 50 overs each before an innings changover, and the team with the highest score winning the match. The latest and greatest T20, which consists of 20 overs per side, with the highest score winning the match. Depending on the match being played will dictate whether each player gets an opportunity to bat. In the shortened forms of the game, the players listed to bat lower in the order, (usually the specialist bowlers) may not get an opportunity to bat if the top order performs well and scores a lot of runs. During a test match, most of the time each player will bat at least once, as there is plenty of time that allows teams to try and post big scores and teams will use all of there batsmen to do this. I did try and keep this as simple as possible. It can start to get confusing if you are new to the game. The question about the wickets, and "stuff" going flying everywhere is a hard one to answer. We would need to know who hit the wickets, and why the "stuff" or bails, went flying everywhere. Did the bowler hit the stumps with the ball he bowled? Did the the wicketkeeper try and stump a batsmen who was out of his ground? Or did the batsmen hit the stumps with his bat? This last one is very unlikely, but can happen from time to time. I hope this helps, and post any more questions you do have.

PMac, Cricket is a highly complex game for newbies to learn. If you watch it often, you learn it a lot. Someone can't give you a typed up explanation of how it goes because there are loads of factors towards the game.

Hi, Thanks for all of the information! Very useful, as for the stuff coming off the wickets, as best I can remember, a guy hit the wickets with a ball. He threw it at close range and hit them, thus the stuff came flying off. I took the dive today and got the cricket ticket. I am getting rid of that willow cricket subscription, not happy with that. Again, thatnks for the useful information. Pat |

I watched the rest of a match tonight between Ireland and Bangladesh. What type of cricket is this? I am guessing the T-20 as you called it.

That would be a One-Day International - each side had 50 overs (although both were bowled out before they had 50 overs).

Pat , you're watching the World Cup !! It's the biggest competition in one day cricket - all the top countries are desparate to win the event. It runs for 6 weeks and the final will be played in Mumbai. Go to the current matches thread and read all about it.
Welcome to cricketworld , you'll find plenty of folks here very happy to answer any cricket related questions. ![]() Edited by Sledger - 28 February 2011 at 5:15am |

I am still watching the India Vs. England match now on my DVR. I have been looking up different stufff on the web everytime I hear something that I do not understand. Still trying to get a handle on the Wickers and Overs thing, Sort have got the gist of it, but I guess I have to remember, this is totally new to me, I would not expect someone from another country to come here to the states and watch a football game and know what is going on, I am enjoying watching it alot though. I even went on ebay and bought an ireland cricket hat from a 2009 series they had. I live in New Hampshire in the USA. Pat

Right now my mind is like a sponge when it comes to cricket. Sent away for a cricket dictionary, Watching the game as someone said they might be the best way for me to get a handle on it, but I have discovered something new that is fun to watch!! I enjoy watching and hearing the crown come to life when something happens. It shows that people are people. A lot of Americans live with ther head in the sand and think that people are what they see on CNN and have no fun in their lives by watching and cheering for a sport. I am trying to bring others on board to the cricket game. And I will be throwing more questions your way as time goes on. I know this is the "Superbowl/Playoff's" of cricket, but is this called T20 Cricket? Someone said there are a lot of different versions of cricket. Thanks, Pat

T20 Cricket is Cricket were the most overs that can be bowled during a team innings (you'll know innings from base ball) is 20, if you don't lose all you wickets by then (similar to baseball, like 3 men out, in cricket its 10). In T20, each team have 1 innings per game. Whoever scores the most runs win.
It's the same in ODI Cricket, which stands for One Day International Cricket. Basically because it takes a whole daytime (morning to evening although there are day/night games to) to complete (usually 8 hours). The ODI Cricket is 50 overs and this is the one that is currently playing World Wide. It's the Cricket World cup, just like the football world cup.
Test Cricket is the other version of international cricket, it is played over 5 days and have 2 innings per team. That's just the basics. Edited by spin wizard - 28 February 2011 at 11:50pm |

When I was 8 years old, I only asked one question to my uncle, what is an Over, He smiled and said 6 balls make an over, that was that, I understood the entire game and became a fan.
Here are the basics Mac. Two teams play against each other, depending upon the Toss one team bats first and one team bats second. The team bowling/fielding tries to take wickets, and stop runs while the team batting tries to save their wickets and score runs. The team making more runs at the end of the time period is the winner. The time period in a T20 game is 20 overs for each side (if the lose 10 wickets before that then it's over right there) The time period in a One day International game is 50 overs for each side (again if they lose 10 wickets before that then it is over right there) The time period for a test match is 5 days (90 overs per day) and both teams have 2 innings (20 wickets) to play, there is no limit to how many overs a team plays, it all depends on when they lose 10 wickets in each innings, or of they wish they can declare their innings (even before losing 10 wickets). Those were the basics, hope by watching the game you'd know ow runs are scored, how wickets are taken, etc... |

One thing I like about Cricket, is that it keeps you really occupied. Anything you think that will cause you to stress about, forget it, just go and watch some Cricket!

It started last year when Directv had a month long cricket preview of the india premiere league, when I first put it on, I got hooked. People ask me why? I guess I found it pretty cool seeing people supporting their teams pretty much the way we support ours over here. It was interesting to listen to the announcers and how they deliver their take on the game and some of the ways they describe it. I also found the game to be interesting, trying to figure out just what was going on. Remember, I had only heard of cricket, had never seen it being played. I work at a hospital and one of the doctors overheard me talking about watching the match on TV. He is from india and ever since then, he and I talk about cricket and the ICC. I was also pretty sick when that was on, I was out of work for a few weeks and watching cricket helped take my mind off things. I also changed a lot of things to get better, Stopped drinking and lost 70 pounds and it has been over a year. I sort of associate cricket with a new life, so to speak. Today Directv put another dish on my roof which enables me to get the 24x7 willow cricket channel. "Cricket has another Supporter" Have a great day!
