That's the day's big news story.

Osama bin Laden, the world's most wanted man, is dead, US president Barack Obama has announced.

The man who was the inspiration for countless acts of terror from the September 11 outrage to the July 7 London bombings was killed in a US operation in Pakistan.

He was holed up not in the mountains of Afghanistan but in a two-storey house a stone's throw from a Pakistani army base in Abbottabad, about 50 miles from the capital Islamabad.

President Obama said: "A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability.

"No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian causalities. After a firefight they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body."

David Cameron welcomed the development, saying it would "bring great relief to people across the world". He said: "It is a great success that he has been found and will no longer be able to pursue his campaign of global terror."

Jubilant crowds flocked to the White House and to Ground Zero in New York where the twin towers of the World Trade Centre stood until they were destroyed by two hijacked jets on September 11, 2001.

Relatives of al Qaida victims welcomed the news. Nigel Thompson, who worked as a stockbroker with Cantor Fitzgerald in the World Trade Centre, died at the age of 33.

His father Norman, from Sheffield, said: "I'm pleased, definitely. It doesn't bring our son back - we've lost him. People talk of closure. There's no such thing as closure because we have it every day. It's one of those difficult things. It would bring justice, definitely, but certainly no closure. It's an every day trial for us."

Amid the general relief there were warnings of a possible backlash from bin Laden's supporters. John Gearson, Reader in Terrorism Studies and Director of the Centre for Defence Studies at King's College London, said: "There will be concerns that there could be some sort of retaliation, that al Qaida may well want to demonstrate that they are still strong and still in the game."

Any thoughts on this guys?

I am also very interested to hear how this is being reported in Pakistan in particular, maybe zuhair can fill us in on this?

Yeh this one has been blasted all over the news, only Justin Bieber getting 'egged' has got more air time .

But seriously, let's try and not get too political with this issue and keep it nice and civilised. The feeling in Australia is that it really makes no difference, I take it most people would also harbour the same thoughts.

Definitely, would like to see Zuhair's views on this since he's right in the thick of things over in Pakistan. Are the journalists going rampant over there? What's the thoughts from the general, moderate, middle class of Pakistan?

A man because of whom almost every muslim across the world was looked upon as a terrorist is finally dead. A terrorist has no religion and I hope this is the first major step in eradicating terrorism from this world.

from a cricketing point of view, I hope this goes a long way in eliminating terrorism from Pakistan and hopefully we will see cricket return to Pakistan in near future, This must be such a big relief for all innocent Pakistani's and hopefully they will live a lot more peacefully from now on.

Fox News – December 26, 2001

Usama bin Laden has died a peaceful death due to an untreated lung complication, the Pakistan Observer reported, citing a Taliban leader who allegedly attended the funeral of the Al Qaeda leader.

“The Coalition troops are engaged in a mad search operation but they would never be able to fulfill their cherished goal of getting Usama alive or dead,” the source said.

Bin Laden, according to the source, was suffering from a serious lung complication and succumbed to the disease in mid-December, in the vicinity of the Tora Bora mountains. The source claimed that bin Laden was laid to rest honorably in his last abode and his grave was made as per his Wahabi belief.

About 30 close associates of bin Laden in Al Qaeda, including his most trusted and personal bodyguards, his family members and some “Taliban friends,” attended the funeral rites. A volley of bullets was also fired to pay final tribute to the “great leader.”

The Taliban source who claims to have seen bin Laden’s face before burial said “he looked pale … but calm, relaxed and confident.”

Asked whether bin Laden had any feelings of remorse before death, the source vehemently said “no.” Instead, he said, bin Laden was proud that he succeeded in his mission of igniting awareness amongst Muslims about hegemonistic designs and conspiracies of “pagans” against Islam. Bin Laden, he said, held the view that the sacrifice of a few hundred people in Afghanistan was nothing, as those who laid their lives in creating an atmosphere of resistance will be adequately rewarded by Almighty Allah.

When asked where bin Laden was buried, the source said, “I am sure that like other places in Tora Bora, that particular place too must have vanished.

I have a few views on this.  My mind is somewhat like Flipper, I'm a bit skeptical about if it is really Bin Laden they found.  Another thing is, if it really is Bin Laden, then there will surely be retaliation.  They mightn't do it right away but it has to be at the back of the defenses of the respective countries mind.

And Sam has a good point too, many Muslims have been wrongly labelled due to these terrorist and its a fact.  For instance, by the time a local here spots a Muslim, they throw the terrorist joke (you can't blame them if anytime you hear of a terrorist you hear they are Muslims).

This is a suspicious thing here though, knowing the way people operate, I think they'd more kill the bodyguards etc and keep the prized possession alive for interrogation for further information.  Either that or one of Bin Laden men did as he use to instruct his men years ago that goes something like this, "if they come near me, shoot me instead of letting them kill me".

What a huge loss to humanity. A sad day for man-kind. I for one will be walking around with a black band around my arm NOT.

So Usama bin laden finally bites the dust. He had that one coming and I say with no remorse whatsoever that he got what he deserved. You reap what you sow ( para-phrase that Mr Laden!!).
My view on this is that of justice being done and a hint of caution too, for fear of retaliation, sad but that become of the world we live in.

I've read a lot of contradicting reports on this episodes effect/affect on the Qaeda. while a few believe that it could be blow them apart, others believe that they've grown a lot stronger and larger in the past ten years and are beyond this one man. Which one is true I don't know. All I knnow is the such misplaced, blunt, bogus and violent ideologies must not prevail.

Many all over the world are rejoicing esp in the United States. Guess the veil of despondency that had curtained them since 9/11 may have been lifted to a certain extend. But success lies not in the killing of this man but the demise of such ideologies. Peace!!!

Pssst... Just why on earth did Laden and his associates decide to zero in on a location just 800m away from the Pakistan military camp as his safe haven mansion I'll never understand.

I figure this is how it(the decision) went.

Laden aide : Osama we've mapped many places as possible hideouts. There's this place very secluded normal resident area. Far away from Islamabad or any other major cities...

Laden : Hmmm.. What my other options.

Laden's aide : Eh..well there's this place not very far from Islamabad in Abbottabad very close to a military camp.. but don't worry we got other options...

Laden : No, No thats perfert. and make sure you build huge walls with barbwires on the top so that no one would suspect any thing
I distrust a camel.. and anyone else who can go a week without a drink.

Just imagine the same thing happened - but it was the Pakistani Army doing the operation and not the US army.  Who on earth would have believed the story that Pakistan army  killed him and then threw him in the open sea. Nonsense.  There was no  way on earth he would hide in a large compound just a few hundred yards away form the National Military Academy.

It is a farce. The US wanted a reason to prolong the stay in the region. It is as simple that they want to stay here longer and Pakistan is their next target.

And Sam, this wont ease Pakistan's troubles - it will only worsen them. America will now more openly operate in Pakistan for reasons well documented. And none of us actually know that it was Osama behind the 9/11 attacks - it may well have been America itself. It was the US itself who aided Osama during the USSR war - and loaded him with all the arms and ammunition. Now they call him the biggest terrorist when they (US) themselves have killed millions in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. Huh. The reaction here in Pakistan is mixed - but hardly anyone believes the story that the Americans came here and killed Osama in the city area. There are no takers of this story.

And Sam, it would not help the Muslim either -  would not call it a step towards eradicating a terrorist - because the terrorist in my view is some other country. Just my view though - you may all differ.

And this surely would not being cricket back to Pakistan. Al Qaeda was never a Pakistan phenomenon - it does not operate form or in Pakistan. We have the Talibans not the Al Qaeda. Pakistani problems will continue as long as the US stays in the region and I do not see them leaving the region  anytime soon - so no more cricket I am afraid.

Was waiting anxiously for your views Zuhair and you have made terrific points.  I know Flipper and I will agree to you, I don't believe it either, seems non-sense to me.

I have heard the story about the USA probably being involved in the 9/11 attack but that aside, terrific post.  Shukria!

What a safe place he decided for a hideout , so near to the military camp , Americans were mislead searching in some lonely mountains, all the while he was in a safe custom built mansion. It's anybody's guess who gave them security and why he was there all the time. Anyways everything is in black and white for world, It always was. Good that it was not a joint operation else he would have sneaked somewhere else.

Well, the folks in the Caribbean always use to say that the war in Iraq was all about oil.  Caribbean people don't buy stories so easily.  Many of them hear don't believe this Bin Laden is dead story either.

That is the strength of the propaganda folks. America's aim is to get access to the Central Asia for which Pakistan is the gateway through Afghanistan. Afghanistan is already in their control, all what they need now is to further weaken Pakistan for which they will find more reasons in the future. Another reason why the US wants to stay here is China's growing power - they would never want that to happen that soon - which is why they will keep supporting India to keep in check China's progress. It is all part of a great game in my view.

Listen mate, Pakistan Army is a joke. They are puppets of the Americans and the entire Pakistan nation hates its army. Americans have enough presence in Pakistan to know about Osama's whereabouts - there was no way he was hiding in the city area without anyone knowing that.

I don't know what exactly do you mean by black and white here. America's next target is to pressurize Pakistan to give away its nuclear assets. And the Indian media has already started cribbing over it - fearing that Pakistan can now use its nuclear weapons on India. What a joke.

Haha what a joke by typical Indian media.  We have lost 30,000 innocent people in blasts and 5000 army personnels but we are still confused that who is killing us actually.  Still, whole world is saying that we are providing hideouts to alqiada(or what ever they are). what a joke

Good Post Amal.

Well I certainly do not have good knowledge on politics but the only reason I say it is good that Osama is dead is because he himself through various videos has claimed the responsibility of various terrorist attacks and if he has killed even one innocent soul in the name of religion or whatever, he deserves to be hanged just for that.

I'm not a big fan of the USA either and even I think that the war on Iraq was purely because of Oil.

I cannot comment much on America's plan on Pakistan or Asian countries because as I said I do not have good knowledge on this, but I certainly do not believe that PAK were assisting Osama in hiding there, As Amal has rightly pointed out PAK have suffered a lot and a lot  because of terrorism and it is very hard to believe that they are providing hideouts to the terrorist organizations.

Anyways, I hope and pray that all countries stay safe from terrorist attacks, the sooner we get rid of all these terrorists the better it is for the world. Lets hope for a better tomorrow, lets hope this world becomes a much better and safer place to live in.

Ameen. But Sam, I'm not seeing any bright future for Pakistan. After the Killing of Osama (if the news is right) alqaida will show anger by doing blasts in big cities of Pakistan, as they did after laal Musjid incident and USA and some other countries are also showing their anger on Pakistan. I seriously don't know what will be our future

Sam those videos are just put together by the U.S to scare the American public in general, thankfully most are waking up to this but there are many brain washed in the world who fall for it hook line and sinker, dumb is too smaller word for it. The FBI has always said that he was never wanted for 911 because they had no proof. Those vids never looked anything like him anyway.

Obama has been a lame duck as expected, and was about to go down in history as the worst ever next to Bush 2, He needed this staged nonsense to regain popularity in my opinion.

Yes I can see the power of propaganda, Pakistani general innocent public does not even have an idea of what their military and govt are doing all these years. They know ignorance is bliss and they very well know how to  make stories that divert attention from real problems on hand from general public.

Biggest ever joke on this forum is about blaming Indian media for their self inflicted misery and mess, come on get over it. India sees no reason to get into a slanging match with Pakistan at a time when the neighbouring country is clearly suffering huge embarrassment with so many uncomfortable questions that entire world is asking.Just denial won't work anymore.

Now regarding 911 or recent OBL hunt down speculations, well not even my my two cents for it. There are lot of consipiracy theories about those and we will have a thousand more stories.Yes anyone can photoshop and create thousands of conspiracy theories.Yes even 7 year old kid can.
It was true or staged or semi staged (I know you are gonna attack me, do it , then I will take advantage and clean up the brewing mess), I don't care a bit. One thing I can say is Americans are damn intelligent as they always have been , they know how to get things done. There is an age old beautiful saying in Hindi "Jab seedi unglie se ghee na nikle , tho ungli teedi kanri padthi hai" , which means when you can't take out butter from a straight finger, you got to crook your finger.

The trick is not to fall for it , the ground realities about the terrorism, its problems , how they are made , how they are braniswashed to the point that they believe that what they are doing in right and where it is brewing up is crystal clear. Left untreated will spread like a cancer.

I won't spend more time and energy here...you can educate an ignorant , but not brain washed and ill informed.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Yashwant-backs-Abbottabad-like-strike-by-India/articleshow/8183300.cms - true that Indian media takes no stock in this!!!

You have hit the nail on the head mate - left untreated is already spreading like a cancer - ground realities on terrorism clearly tell America is the biggest terrorist on the planet and we should all wok towards eradicating it - right?

Yes , I always hit the nail on the head, but sorry America is not a terrorist nation they are infact eliminating the terrorism that is brewing up in the world. It is a different aspects that they only consider 9/11 attack as major one and rest of the terrorist attack on other countries is meaningless for them. They don't keep quite like other nations and suffer, they have a tit for tat policy in place , they know how to get things done against terrorists, violent non-state actors, extremists who always wage a proxy war and kill innocent people and never come forward. The moment they are hunted down , they try to gather sympathy as it is very easy in the world to get it. They kill so many innocent people which never gets noticed.

The article that you brought , former Indian foreign minister is absolutely right in saying that evil guys like OBL and DI should be eliminated whever they are, which ever country they are as soon as possible to make the world a better place - Right ? If the governments where these terrorists hide can't eliminate them , then do you wait for ages before they die of natural death before producting 1000 such anti social elements , or before they kill thousands of innocent lives?  How long can anyone wait against them.

I know one thing for sure , good always wins over the bad , evil will eventually die out on its own in long run.Infact they kill one another and die out. Thousands of years of history suggests that evil intentions and people never win. They might have upper hand momentarily, but eventually it is the good that will previal over the bad.

How many more lives before the elimination of bad is the quesiton?.

Ask Obama for the answer. America has history - from Nagasaki Herosehma to Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and now Pakistan - how many more lives before the elimination is the question indeed.

What does a man do when mosquito sits his  body to suck the blood? Will the man happily allow mosquito to suck blood or just smash it ?

Smash the mosquito and everyone who looks like a mosquito or lives nearby. But I learnt in my childhood - there is no point banging the head on the wall.

Yes without a doubt. In my childhood I used to believe that everyone can be educated about what is right and what is wrong and entire world can live in love and harmony. As the grew up , I understood that people lose logic and fail to understand or accept the real truth , selectively assume and imagine things, believe in only what they want to believe, forget the thousands of years of history , learn nothing from it and become complete morons and say "hey 1+1 is 3", unfortunately we can't explain that 1+1 accounts to 2 to someone who fundamentally learnt that "1+1" is 3.

This is the precise reason why the terrorists are to be finished as soon as possible, before their poison engulfs many. They poison so many minds so much that those who do the wrong deeds never realise what they have become and what they are doing to themselves.

Listen guys, The terrorists are not good neither are the Americans any angels or "saviors" of the world. everyone does a lot of things for their own benefit and terrorists say they are doing it for people of their religion while Americans say they are doing it for their people and "to save the world", we need not waste our time in talking about these people because they are not worth spending time up on. Bottom line is both Terrorists and Americans are killing innocent people for which they will get punished on the day of Judgement and that will be a very very bad punishment.

As for relations between India and Pakistan, well they will continue to blame each other for ever, continue to fight for ever, I do not even care about what these politicians say, I consider all of them to be corrupt and they speak only for their benefit and to get some votes. Instead of wasting our time on them Lets enjoy the game we love the most... Cricket!
