Thought this topic may create some interesting discussions! My tip for player of the tournament is Ricky Ponting. In sparkling form before he had his rest so hopefuly he can come out even stronger!!! Your opinions???

I agree with Gayle but Bond will probably break down during the cup at some stage!

Bond will break down? Let's hope not.

I'd keep my eye on Sangakkara if I were you, he's about to rock the cricket world.
Good one Graham!

Haha I could see that comment had a little undertone to it. I'd say minor injuries are a possibility but they will probably monitor him with care and play him in games they need to. For example he may not play Kenya in the pool match.

Good one Graham!

He is such a dangerous player and if the rest of his side perorm well enough and get to the final(s) he may very well be a good chance!

I expect a senior player to be the one that will matter in winning or losing of a side, as has been the case in previous cups, like Miandad and Imran for pakistan,Lyoid and richards for windies, Steve waugh for ausies, Arvinda desilva and ranatunga for lankans, Kapil & Amarnath for india, macdermot once for Ausies.
So the eyes will be on Sachin, Jayasuria, Lara, Ponting, Inzi, Pollock, vettori, Flemming  to do somthing for their teams to end their careers on a high note. A few players will establish themselves as big players like KP, Sangakara, Dhoni, Tait, Abe devilliars, Dilshan, Bravo,Taylor( Ross),  Tailor(gerome) just to name a few.

Sachin Tendulkar for player of the tournament. He'll be scoring runs in this WC like he was in the 2003 WC.
"His classical hits down the ground, met with a checked drive, were Tendulkar at his best. It was though he had a new lease of life." - Sachin Tendulkar's return to cricket with a 91-Ball century.

I think anyone who under estimates Tendulkar will do so at their own perril. Although maybe not in as good form at last cup, he can always be dangerous, particularly in this tournament. Good call mate!

Very true. Tendulkar will always be a force to reckon with. He'll be a strong contender, along with Ponting and Sanga as mentioned before. Lara will want to be in with a chance as well.

However, I feel that a very likely candidate will be Kevin Pietersen. If England manage to make it past the Super 8 stage, then I'm sure he will end the tournament with the most runs.

If this is more a bowlers tournament than a batsman's, then my money will be on Shaun Pollock who is unstoppable in his current form.
And despite what people may think of Lasith Malinga, I think the amount of swing that this man can generate in the caribbean will be the key to Sri Lanka's success. More so than Murali. (note: this is only an opinion)

Totally agree Mojo. I think if it is a bowlers tournament, and if all goes to plan, i believe it could be the Pollock/McGrath show. P.S Love the disclaimer!!!!Wink

I think that Collingwood/Pietersen will be the players to light this one on fire. Their team might not win the tournament, but they'll pull of some super performances.

True, Collingwood was in outstanding form in the CB series! Pieterson is always dangerous but maybe lacking fitness after his injury. Again, one of those blokes we can not under estimate!

It all depends who is more spectaculer. I think Nathan Bracken will take the most wckets, have the best average, strike rate and economy rate but will as usual hardly raise a mention. I think the boy Gilchrist or my smoky is an nder achiever I desperately hope ignites his team.....Craig Mcmillian

I hope your right Alfie!!! It would be nice for Lara to finish in style, but i think there are so many other players that are in great form where as Lara hasnt been in good ODI form for a while. I will be keeping a close eye on him as a determined Lara can accomplish anything!!! Pariticularly against Australia!)

Somehow with the look of things in the warm up matches, it appears as more teams are getting all out batting first, and bowlers have been on the top. So we may well be seeing a bowler or two among the players of the tournament, provided we see a drastic change in the pitches for the world cup matches!

Add Vaas as well. They all do the same thing. How much we are missing Heath Streak! The fourth of this unique quartret of line and length bowlers!

This season, in 16 one dayers, Jacques Kallis has taken 18 wickets at an average of 19 and scored 550 runs at an average of 50. If he performs at that standard over 11 matches he will score about 400 runs and take about 13 wickets, which is similar to the performance that earned Lance Klusener player of the tournament in 1999.
My pick is Kallis, and if not, I pick one of Shane Bond, Shaun Pollock, Ricky Ponting or sentimental home favourite Brian Lara to take it away.
JH Kallis is the only player in history to have 8000 runs, 200 wickets and 100 catches in BOTH forms of the game. Only Sobers (tests) and Jayasuriya (one dayers) have achieved half that feat.

Yeah I agree with Superbokkie. If Kallis bowls enough overs then he could do what Klusener did in 1999.

Kallis's bowling is back to its best. He bowled quite a few balls in the 142-152 Kph mark against Pakistan and India

You're Right Tonks, it would be great to see Lara get player of the tournament. If not him, i would like to see gilchrist smash a few, hopefully not against england thoughWink.

So far we have mentioned Pontig, jaysaria, Gayle, Lara, McMillian, Kallis, Gilchrist, Tendulker, Vaas, McGrath, Pollock. We have left out so many other game breakers. This is why this cup has been met with such anticipation. Whether the pitches allow 35+ scores regularly or 150+ is competitive the players who will retire, emerge or fade away are sure to make this the best yet. By the way, my honest tip is Boucher.
