    Posted: 19 July 2006 at 9:55am

When I was bowling in my last match on the weekend I accidently got a ball to reverse swing.  The batsman had now idea and I got him plum lbw.  Problem is I don't remember what I did to get the ball to reverse.
Any tips or ideas on how to hold the ball, what side to rough up, wrist and seam position, where to pitch it would be greatly appreciated.

Two main things Ossie , keep the ball DRY and bowl it full. AS for the technical stuff , wait for a posting from a real bowler!

I bowl mainly outswingers and leg cutters so should I keep pitching it on off stump if goes either way I'm covered?

When the ball becomes more older and worn it's gonna start swinging in the opposite direction to where it would usually swing no great change in the bowling grip. This happen very late in the delivery. Not every single bowler can do reverse swing the ball needs to be going above 80mph there make it move in the air. Sarfraz Nawaz made it and he did it perfectly now you can see all good bowlers obtainting reverse swing. You probably had an old ball but what you did was not a fluke . If your bowling is like you can probably do it regularly. It's all about the balls deterioration my coach told me it turns the opposite way so you dont do anything differently for ex. a outswinger will become an inswinger and oppositely an inswinger into an outswinger.

That's playing it safe , I guess , but the finest exponents of reverse do it deliberately! Watch last year's Ashes series and watch Simon Jones , he got it to go almost at will.

Got to say you've cheered me up mate ! A young lad reversing the ball in Australia - that's got to be encouraging for Freddy and company.

I'll drop him a line and tell him the good news!

I was bowling in the 35th over, but how early can it start.  I'm not nearly 80mph but it definatley reversed because I was holding the ball for an outswinger but it swung back in.

35th over that's about excatly when the reverse swing starts. Some people get it in 15-25. About the speed if you're not 80mph or anywhere around there. Then probably why it reverse swung; the ball was old main reason 35th over is ideal for the ball to start to reverse swing. Does your team have bowlers who bang the ball hard on the pitch? As I said before it's all about the deteroation of the ball. The ball must have been very worn.

I'm not sure about mph but I bowl about 120-125kpm, what is that in mph?  I normally bowl first change and start my spell in about the 14-16 over I was at least 5-6 overs into my spell when it happened.  We have a couple of very fast opening bowlers who do hit the deck hard and ussually get 6-7 overs each before I come on.

Thats around 77mph. So all the factors add up you can do reverse swing but remember its all about the deteroation of the ball. This link has great tips on how to reverse swing and some key factors of why the ball reverse swings.

Is there a limited pace on reverse swing. I'm sure its possible for even a medium pacer to get SOME reverse swing even if it's not to the extent of a much faster bowler obviously. I would swear i saw collingwood getting abit of late inswing with an old ball against pakistan.

yeah , anyone can get reverse swing. Dwayne smith is a fine exponent of reverse swing for a medium pacer.
