Noticed that on cricinfo prediction game - in the star wars league - all teams except one or two do have one player in common and that is Watson.

What dream teams will you guys pick or have picked?

I have picked the following:
Amla
Kamran Akmal (wk)
Kohli
Jayawardene
Trott

It won't be wise to leave out Shakib, Zuhair. For the initial stages it is better to pick some Kenya players as well because they play 2 games very quickly. Odoyo is a good pick, so is Tikolo.

My team for the initial part is somewhat different but overall I'll most;y have the following players:

Tamim
Hashim
Kohli
Younus
Watson
Shakib
Kallis
Sangakkara
Gul
Malinga
Morne

I'll keep some players from minnow teams (when some of these players are not playing) at all times to be able to maintain the budget.

Zuhair, at the moment, Watson is one of the best openers, why is he batting so late?  Ofcourse, if that's a fantasy game, that's ok but if that's a best team you'd pick, then Watson should open or don't play.

I think the top 8 teams will qualify for the QFs. Every team would have seen and learnt from the previous two WCs and will take the minows seriously.

Teams like SA, Srilanka who play every game seriously (even if they are qualified for QFs) has more chances of topping the groups. Keeping that in mind, my prediction (in order) would be:

Group A-
Srilanka
Australia
Pakistan
NewZealand

Group B-
South Africa
India
England
West Indies

From Qf stage, it is a matter of one game and anything can happen.
Sri - WI - Srilanka has more chances
Aus-Eng - Australia has more chances (unless England intentionally didn't take it seriously in recent series)
Pak-Ind - India has more chances
Nz-SA - SA has more chances

The South Africans will be there or thereabouts and I fancy Kallis to make plenty of runs.  Dale Steyn will blast out plenty of top order batsmen and Morkel will do alright as well.  If there are doubts about SA it's that they don't seem to know what their best XI is and it's the big debating point in the pub.   I see Kallis doing so well with the bat because they have so many bowling options - he won't bowl more than a couple of overs in any one match I think.   Of course on the downside , they can still play too negatively and lose matches that a more aggressive approach would win - they might yet again prove to be their own worst enemy.
India , Sri Lanka , Pakistan and England (naturally!) are my favourites and in that order - Australia won't be winning this one and won't contest the semifinals either!

Yes Sledger, I don't think Australia stand a chance in this one, not reaching the finals anyway.  India were hot yesterday, the batting is so powerful and dangerous.  With them in their backyard and that their spinners seem to be in form, the bowling looks much better now.

Winners : South Africa or England.
I  think the burden of expectation is going to pull India out. most likely in the QFs, have an uncomfortable feeling it could be against Pakistan.

No mention of Australia?
Interesting?

Watch how many bad umpiring decisions the Aussies get? Very few, I bet (because umpires always seem to give Oz batsmen the benefit of the doubt?). If few decisions against them, they could do better and better as they go on!

India - will be "done" by bad umpiring decisions at critical points / critical players! Also, their bowling is not up to scratch!

South Africa - they are the form team in all departments. Amla always plays well against India, subcontinental countries.

Key factor will be umpires ie. which part of the world they are from in the critical match-ups, eg. India vs South Africa; if umpires from Oz / England / Pakistan, then India will be lucky to get 50-50 decisions or 50% of decisions!!

Vote4peace, the expectations won't be the reason why India would go, if anything, their bowling is what will let them down.  On any decent pitch, India would be making 300+ scores.  For Netherland's sake, they better hope the meet a decent bowling pitch.

personally, I think it's very hard to predict who will win. it's turning out to be a very interesting world cup though. No doubt India will definitely be favourites. The team I like is not playing good cricket at all so.....:S

Okay ppl knock out stage is bout to commence which means prediction time!!!

1st Quarter Final - Pakistan v West Indies         - Winner : Pakistan
2nd Quarter Final - India v Australia                   - Winner : India
3rd Quarter Final - New Zealand v South Africa  - Winner : South Africa
4th Quarter Final - Sri Lanka v England              - Winner : England

which could mean the SF line-up would be :
South Africa vs England
India vs Pakistan

Now this is real prediction time!!! I don't think England are beating the Lankans on thier home soil. So that is where I differ. Saf and Pak should be through. India Australia match would be a good one too - it won't be a close one - it will be a hammering - for either of the team. India need more than 10 overs of Zaheer Khan if they are to win three knock out games and I don't see that happening.

I interviewed Rashid Latif at the start of the World Cup (for the newspaper I work for), and he tipped Pakistan and South Africa for the finals. May well be right!!

I'd go with exactly the same predictions as that of V4P... I would want to see ENG win against lanka just because ENG have entertained us a lot and they haven't made th SF's since 92, SLN have had a good run in last two WC's making the Finals in 07 and SF's in 03.

Ind-Aus will be a thriller if they prepare a good batting wicket, if they prepare a "turner" it could go either way, it could even back fire on India.

That would be my predections:

1st Quarter Final - Pakistan v West Indies         - Winner : Pakistan
2nd Quarter Final - India v Australia                   - Winner : Australia
3rd Quarter Final - New Zealand v South Africa  - Winner : South Africa
4th Quarter Final - Sri Lanka v England              - Winner : Sri Lanka

I dont think Australia will repeat the mistakes which they did again Pakistan. We might see some aggression from them in the remaining matches.

It has been the Aravinda's, the Warne's, the Wasim's, the Waugh's and the Pontings's who have made a mark at the big stage, players who rise to the occasion and have that ability to perform under pressure are the ones who become legends.

The stage has come when the not-so-good players will be separated from the legends.

I'll try to predict one player from each team who can make the difference if they are to win the WC,  let me see how close I get by the time we end. You all can try the same.

Pakistan - Umer Gul
South Africa - AB Devillers
Srilanka - M Muralidaran
India - Gautam Gambhir
Australia - Michael Clarke
England - Eoin Morgan
New Zealand - Jesse Ryder
West Indies - Chris Gayle

Ricky Ponting, by the way, is already a legend.

It will have to be Zaheer Khan if India do manage to win it. India's well documented problem is their bowling and Zaheer will have to stand tall and perform single handedly, which is why India has the rarest of chances to go the distance. That is my two cents.

I think Harbhajan too will have to play a Big role along with Zaheer if India is to go far. He's such a dangerous bowler if he's in the groove. But consistency has been his problem.

And I'm not sure of Clarke being Australia's man for the occasion. My money's still on Ponting.
