while the forum remains inactive let me tell you this series is going to charge me up, this is going to be a neck to neck battel between two of the best sides in the world. Clearly RSA seem to have a better line up but their mental block against the Aussies continues to haunt them.

While I hope RSA win the series and I'm confident they will do it, I also hope to see one of my all time favt cricketers Ricky Ponting in action and score a lot of runs this series!

RSA getting slaughtered by a Clarke/Hussey special. Australia has a very decent middle order, with Wade also just coming off a test ton against the Windies and Ponting in sublime domestic form (yes, I do realise he scored a duck - but those things happen). To see Cowan make a ton from the opening position was refreshing. Doesn't drive much, so I'm not sure why they didn't bowl fuller to him (although his forward defence is very tight to be fair), and he's a real grinder. He's a quality guy to have around the team and hope he continues to do well. With Watson to come back, the top order will look better with Cowan and Watson there, while Warner really needs to find some more consistency.

Wow, if only the second day would not have been washed out , Aussies would have been in great great chance to win this one.

With 37 runs on the board and 90 overs to go , it is very difficult for Aussies to get a positive result now,but I do hope they play positive 30 overs at 6 runs per over and get 180+37 runs already and get to 220 and just give it a shot. Who knows , one good spell and they might still get a result despite losing one full day.

Absolutely Mikey, Watson is a very crucial player, he is one player who moulds into any format seamlessly.

I know I am making a tall claim , but his statistics  over last few years don't lie, well records over a period of time don't lie, I have not seen any player who fits in perfectly in Test or ODI or T20s that too instantaneously, initially when he started to have a purple patch , I thought maybe we are over exaggerating it but always knew he had quality, the only question being his fitness and form, but from 2008 he has been a real deal allrounder Thumbs UpThumbs Up

One among Starc/Cummins needs to play, but the issue is whom they will drop? Hilfy, Siddle and Pattinson haven't done bad either.

In my opinion, maybe only one batting spot they need to sort it out and maybe add one extra spinner to squad, all in all  ominous signs for all those who play Australia in 2013.... beware India and England.

Some great points you have made there Raj. One thing I must say though, is that SAF missed the trick by playing Kleinveldt, who is both out of his depth and overweight. I haven't seen such an impotent spell of bowling from a South African in a long time. He never threatened to take a wicket, wasn't bowling at more than medium pace and was bowling a lot of no balls - terrible selection, and if he is SAF's 4th best fit fast bowler, then the stocks must be low. Imran Tahir should have played, Australia don't play leg spin that well (Kaneria and Kumble have both done well in Australia) and he would have provided good variation. Kallis is adequate enough to be the 4th fast bowler, but he also looked a little bit cooked after his long innings.

Australia's goal for the future is to find 2 or 3 decent batsmen to come into the side, and to really back Lyon in this format. Khawaja is test standard, his technique is very good and he has the ability to make big scores. He will come into the side soon, while Nic Maddinson, Burns and Doonan are the other 3 young domestic batsmen to look out for. There is some talent around, unfortunately the wickets in Australian domestic cricket are results orientated and hence why there are A LOT of fast bowlers with awesome numbers in the domestic game (Trent Copeland is a good example, and he's only medium pace).

I have never understood the logic behind playing 4 fast bowlers on what they reckon a seamer friendly wicket, if it really is a seamer friendly wicket then most certainly your best 3 bowlers must be able to bundle out the opposition easily and in this case RSA had arguably the best 3 fast bowlers in the world in Steyn, Morne and Philander... and then they also had Kallis, one of the best allrounders of all time.

Tahir should have played, as Mikey has said Aussies aren't particularly good against quality leg spinners, RSA have definitely missed a trick.

I don't read too much into this performance though, RSA are still the side with better and more reliable resources, you'd bet on Hashim and Kallis getting hundreds again but you never know about Cowan, all in all Clarke remains Australia's main man... and then Steyn and Morne won't have two bad games in a row.

Someone called Joe said : "I think everyone is forgetting that in years gone by umpires called every no-ball as it happened and the bowler had a chance to correct. These days a bowler can be over the line fractionally a lot of deliveries, but they only find out if a wicket falls. I'd like to ask why the four no-balls that have taken wickets were not called 'live' by the umpires?" Fair point, and it makes you wonder how many no-balls that don't take a wicket are not being called.

To be frank , this is what I told when DRS came, sometimes Umpires will be influenced by the number of reviews left in hand by a team and may/may not give it out/not out thinking that anyway team can review it, but we find that when decisions are close where DRS can't conclude it exactly, the final decision goes back to what Umpire had initially decided ... which again might not be what Umpire thought, and one team will lose a review which they should not have in first place while the other team gets benefited not only with the decision but also with an extra review in hand.

DRS no doubt is a good addition , but the technology behind it at times is way off mark, some of the rules like just more than 50% or ball when see on TV looks foolish, even if the technology becomes good enough to use in future, the number of times (Strike down/Upheld ) looks more of a chance and strategy by captain when asking for it.

From fist day itself I have been saying, if you want to bring DRS , just bring it with unlimited number of referrals at discretion of on field umpires ... just like run out referrals, let Umpire have a call and check with some super fast technology aid available and make a decision.

For example , when I see something live at close decisions, it looks out/not out, but the moment reply is shown on TV, I can make 95% correct decisions .... this hardly takes time, why not just give that tool   (a Simple Replay) to Umpire, let him use it whenever in need, his performance can be monitored and will be accountable also.

It's my personal opinion, but somehow I feel that umpires these days are not that attentive as they used to be, because at the back of their mind they always know the fact that there are some reviews left and teams can review it, here comes the problem ( not a technology problem here) ... Captain might be unsure to review it because one of the many reasons, just to name a few ... captain might want to save some reviews for future or maybe captain feels the bowler is not a good judge when it comes to reviews.

SA will consider that they are lucky enough to escape this with a draw.

However it should be noted that if Day 2 was not washed out, maybe SA would have approached the second innings in a much different mindset  ( here they were just trying to draw this out , as they did not have any realistic chance of winning and in process were at a worrisome 166/5).

Australia take bunch of positives with them to Adelaide as opposed to SA who have some headaches ahead of Adelaide clash. Faf du plessis is a good player, but the pressure to grab a spot in test line up isn't easy, sometimes it gets better of any quality player, sometimes the player gets a great debut if they stay positive and not think too much about grabbing vacant place.

On the Aussies bowling line up, Hilfy is a must for Aussies in future Ashes tour, considering the future series in line, I guess Aussie think tank wants to him in side in-spite of having great young options who in a way suit Australian conditions better than him. However in Perth (3rd test) I guess it is a better idea to rest him & Lyon and give Starc & Cummins a chance.

Cummins is injured... again.

There are a lot of good fast bowling options, I'd personally chooses the fastest bowler, look to get a bowler who can have a real impact. I like the look of Coulter-Nile.

The idea of checking for a no-ball time and again only when the batsmen is out is absolutely ridiculous, and the number of times the umpires are doing this is disgraceful. As Sanjay Manjrekar once said on air "it just kills the moment", it really does, I can understand this happening once in a while but these days I see it happening every time.

Happy with the way this test has ended, RSA have had a fairly bad 2nd innings and it's good that a bad performance is out of the way, hoping for a better wicket at Adelaide.

Many have been talking about Virat Kohli and Hashim Amla and how they are the two best batsmen in the world today, but we have to say Michael Clarke is in unbelievable form since quite some time, a brilliant double hundred here, his third of the year!!! well done Michael Clarke!

Clarke and Sangakkara are the best two batsmen at the moment, Kohli, Amla and Kallis come next. Need to look at current numbers, a 200, 250 and a 300 (2 of these not out) against top sides for Clarke has not been matched by anyone else.

The thing is Mikey that these days every time you see Hashim Amla or Virat Kohli go out there to bat you'd expect them to get a hundred, such has been their consistency, I'm talking about both ODI's and Tests, clarke hasn't done that well in ODI's as much as he has done in test matches. But anyways I agree, Clarke, Hashim and Virat all of them are pretty much at par at the moment. I won't cpunt Sanga in the same tier, I don't know, I really don't think he has been that consistent.

Not sure if you're being serious about Sanga... He just one player of the year for good reason.

Those 5 I mentioned are in the best nick, not sure why you're not counting Kallis though.

Yes Sam but i guess than the same situation is for Kohli too he has done nothing in Test so solo on Odi's cant be good enough that is why -

Amla/Kallis for me are the top 2 players i would want to see they pick in any team and really Kallis is not a single player he is 2in1 be it 1 over match or 100 still Kallis would be good enough. Honestly people say there wont be another Bradman but really if anyone can get half of what Kallis has done he should be given a special award -

Why SA played a 4 prong attack is way beyond me, seeing that you have Kallis in your side?? Why do big experience men make such errors?? Tahir hasn't really ran through sides as yet but still worth the play when you have 3 top pacers + a very quality fast bowling all rounder.

I also agree with Mikey, I tried to see what the hype about Kleinveldt was but I couldn't see it.  There is another SA seamer but I can't remember his name, he recently played for them (can't remember which format) and he was hitting the deck extremely hard and bowling very fast from a simple run up.  Is he injured or something??

And Aussies middle order good indeed with Clarke and Hussey there.  Hussey is one of my favourite players, doesn't have much apparent reason and has been prolific in all formats for most of his Int. career.  I think his consistency is on par or even better than some greats.  Hussey rarely scores big centuries and to still maintain a 50+ average tells of his consistency.  Top player.

in regards to best batsman around, you can't look past Hashim Amla.  He just does it too easily.  The guy scores at a run a ball in ODI's with little effort.

I really don't know what special Sanga has done, I do watch SLN cricket but may be I just didn't notice, I really was surprised when he got the player of the year award, I know he is good but I haven't noticed him as much as I have noticed Hashim, Kohli and Clarke. As for Kallis, he is always there, a true legend.

Spinny if you are talking about Merchant De Lange, then he is injured. I really like the way Spinny makes his comments, "why do big experience men make such mistakes" seriously sometimes even i feel when an ordinary person like me cannot see any logic in the decision (of playing 5 seamers), how do they make such mistakes

and yes mystery, I agree Kohli hasn't set things on fire in test matches, but honestly looking at his form and the class he has, he will make it big even at test level.

I only see 2 reason behind playing Kleinveldt - First due to his batting powers as Tahir is a true 11 and 2nd is that Steyn and Morkel can be really expensive and from Tahir you always expect him to go over 4 with wickets or without it plus Kalis was not 100% and actually they were rating Duminy as a better spin option as he is much more accurate plus he is a very decent spinner he is more than a part timer so they were not completely wrong but the problem is Kleinveldt is very ordinary. Duminy might not be big star but still without him in the side it really affect the balance even with Tahir.
Yes Sam Kohli is without any doubt the next big star of Indian cricket.

They can pick a 4th seamer, but he needs to be quality. Kleinveldt was barely hitting 130kph at times, looks so out of shape and was bowling a lot of no balls. I don't know if it was nerves or that he simply is not good enough. Philander and Morkel can both bat, so have them at 8 and 9 - SA has good batting depth in their top 7, especially with AB keeping rather than a keeper-batsman.

Also Sam, you're living under a rock if you haven't seen Kumar in tests lately and adjudged him to be right up there! In his last three tests against Pakistan he scored 192, 199no and 74! C'mon Sam, where are you hiding!?

Why are you directly comparing him to Amla? I never said he was performing better than Amla, all I said was that he is in the top 5 and you can't mention top batsmen without mentioning him. You'd especially mention him before Kohli...

No Mikey, that's because you said he is ahead of Amla, Kohli and Kallis and that is why I was a bit surprised. I initially said Clarke, Kohli and Amla are about at par with each other but didn't mention Sanga, again Kohli's test credentials are yet to be proven.

Right at this moment, as in very, very recent performances, I rate Sanga and Clarke. IN terms of the last 12 months I dare say Amla is no.1.

while Sanga, Clarke, Cook and all look naturally gifted what impresses me about Hashim is his sheer determination and the concentration with which he plays. RSA have this luxury now of Hashim Amla, he is one man who seems to perform for them no matter what the situation and conditions.

Australia are back and back in a BIG way !!!   It's been a long time since I've seen an attack dismantled throughout 2 and a half sessions !  That the attack is South Africa's makes todays effort all the more extraordinary.  Steyn was okay without really threatening , Kallis was excellent before breaking down , but Morkel and Tahir got the hammering of their careers!
At the close of play Australia had taken the total to 482-5 when Hussey was out to Steyn 0 a run rate of 5.5 per over!!   This was achieved after floundering at 55-3 !   That wicket of Ponting was a serious error by the visitors because it brought the magician that is Michael Clarke to the wicket.  He must be seeing that ball like a football becuase he caned all bowlers from ball one , recording his 4TH double century of the year - something that's NEVER been done in test cricket before !!  His strokeplay was out of the top drawer and I have to say he's now approaching one of the classiest batsman I've evr seen - truly brilliant!  Strokes all around the wicket , my personal favourite being his inside out drive through the covers - a thing of real beauty.    Not to be outdone , Warner and Hussey also completed their centuries in double quick time too - it really was a slaughter out there!    The pitch is a belter and I'm not saying SA are dead and buried yet , but it's looking like 700 and Kallis won't bowl again. Even Steyn went off with a pulled hamstring , but did come back in the afternoon.   Clarke is still there and a triple century cannot be discounted.  Tahir won't sleep tonight and Morkel will toss and turn as well!
I'llbe up at 2am tomorrow - watching Clarke bat is as good as it gets - imagine if they'd made him captain 3 years ago , England wouldn't have won 2 Ashes series !!

Normally it hurts me only when Pakistan gets thrashed but today, and RSA are one of my most favorite teams, it did hurt to see them get dismantled like this, all the while I was thinking let Hashim and Kallis come out there to bat and they will make you suffer for two days in the field, and I mean it, I think Kallis, Hashim, AB and Smith will take this as a challenge and fire back at the Aussies, their ego's must have been hit today, this is a proud team and nobody gives them such a thrashing, they will fire back hard.

as much as it hurt watching RSA get thrashed, it was a pleasure to see Michael Clarke in that sort of form, absolutely majestic, congratulations to Clarke on his 4th double ton in a calender year, fabulous, mind blowing, amazing, brilliant... I'm just lost for words!!! what a cricketer!!! Clap

Honestly Sam no matter how good you are its always difficult to comeback in the game while 700 runs in on the board plus i really don't think its a flat pitch if you bowl well you will get rewards. I am sure once Australia comes on to bowl it will look a very different pitch.

Anyone 400 for Clarke?

RSA are a tough team mystery, the No.1 team in the world and believe me they'll stay there for a long time. Good fightback by the proteas, Smith leading the way although their best batsmen Hashim had a rare failure, there is plenty of batting to come still, we could well be looking at another draw. The pace at which the Aussies scored their runs have left enough time in the game though.

At 55-3 Aus were reeling, then two big partnership take them to 481 for 4, experts say this could be a run fest at both the ends.

Then Aus collapse from 482 to 550 on the same pitch Smile. SA start very good with 138 runs partnership, everything looks good , but again Aus claws back with 270 for 7, then comes Du Plessis and Kallis resuce act to avoid follow on and give some respectability to the score.

Aus in second dig again tottering at 103 with half the side gone. A Handy lead of 273.

So what does all these indicate --> Play well and win , some hardly understand.
Race to No 1 again ... started!

This match has really come alive, there are 2 days still left so most definately we will have a result now, all depends on how well Clarke and Hussey play for the Aussies and Amla, Kallis and AB bat in RSA's second innings, with all due respect to the other players I think these 5 will hold the key.
