Aussies set 430 to win for SA. Pattinson and Hilfy were having fun of SA bowling attack, Clarke should have extended it.

With 140 overs to go,it's bit of carrot for SA to go for victory. History says it is very very difficult, but not impossible, esp when there are players like Kallis (even though injured) and Amala in the side.

I want Aussies to win this one here and get back to No 1 ranking.

Tahir's tally of 10 matches and 26 wickets, forget wickets he has been mighty ineffective.I think time is running out for him. Paul Harris has 103 wickets from 37 matches.

Will Botha get a chance again ?  I fear SA have a problem , they don't have a quality spinner.

Tough task for RSA, although AB and Faf are there and Kallis to come it looks way too difficult a task to bat out the entire day tomorrow, RSA have played poorly though, they'll have to win at Perth to hang on to that No.1 ranking, and they will be going there without Kallis.

Not at all impressed by Jacques Rudolph, he has been very ineffective, Duminy and Kallis' injuries mean they may stick with him for Perth too, I think Ashwell Prince should have been in the squad at least, or may be Colin Ingram.

What a fine test match this was - rivetting from start to finish. I didn't expect SA to bat the day out , that they did says a lot for de Villiers , du Plessis and Kallis.   Faf deserves a huge ovation for his hundred on debut and under such pressure.  The pitch played pretty nicely , only the odd ball keeping low and no massive turn , but that doesn't detract from some seriously good batting.   The 1st session was always going to be critical and that they batted through it without losing a wicket must have given the South Africans a lot of hope that they could secure the draw.
Australia will feel they've missed out here , but Clarke's positivity (and fabulous knock) will mean they'll still be going for broke in Perth.  No Kallis will be a blow and Rudolph looks shaky , so they'll be concerned.   They must think of bringing  a keeper in and allowing de Villiers to bat at 5 - in fact with the squad they've got , I don't think they've any other option.   de Villiers' average has plummetted since taking over the gloves - that should be enough for Kirsten to act.
Let's hope for good weather and a typically quick Perth pitch - if that happens I think it'll be a classic and one I don't expect to end in a draw.
Well done SA , unlucky Oz - great match !

I'm not feeling well today so I can't write much, will just say well done RSA, this is why they are the No.1 side in the world and this is why I think they'll stay there for a long time!!! Thumbs Up

RSA was second time lucky to escape with a draw, but I guess they should run out of luck soon. No doubts that SA played well t showed a great resilience, but Australia truly deserve to win this series.

Great knock by Faf, he is a good player, we saw that in initial stages of IPL, dead rubber T20 WC and now in a test when he replaced Duminey, he has come up with special knocks. However there was no weight of expectation on him, no doubt it was true test of character (this test match) but if he can do this consistently when he becomes a permanent member under the weight of expectations, then he will be great asset for SA.

Lyon took a great catch to see Smith's back, now SA 206 for 2 in second innings with a lead of 268. Amla blazing all guns right from the start. This is just Day 2 and 12 overs to go.

3 full days to go, this could go anywhere. I want Aussies to win the match and series, coz they were by far the better side in this tour (I like SA,but this series Aussies played better,so want them to win). I don't mind even if they chase down a world record score in fourth innings (I guess that record is currently held by WI,still I don't mind if Aussies achieve it).

At 3rd day Innings break (Aus getting ready to bat)

Indeed SA set them a world record score to chase down, rightly so coz with 2 days to go , one good partnership could have backfired them.

So now AUS need the magic 632 to win the game, very difficult to achieve but stranger things have happened when there are absolutely no hopes , example SA's chase of 430 odd in J'burg. Moreover last time SA set such a total, experts mocked at them , but that match came real close for an upset.

AUS have nothing to lose here, I am sure they would try to go for it. If Warner fires, if Watson fires , they could really set it up.Pitch looks good though.

by the way saw a funny quote/stat by someone "Only the third time in the history of Test cricket that all 10 wickets have fallen to the same first name, after those two pals of mine, Jim and Anil"

Good solid display by RSA once again, as Dale Steyn said before the 3rd test, "The Aussies have thrown everything they had at us but they still can't beat us". It was a matter of time befor ethe proteas perform to their abilities, Hashim and AB leading the way, would expect the bowlers to do the job tomorrow!

South Africa confirm their status as the best side on the planet with a fine win in the final test. Behind the 8 ball in the 1st two tests , they sent Australia packing in quick time to win by a huge margin of over 300 runs.  Amla and a returning to devasting form , de Villiers scored big hundreds 2nd time around to leave Australia reeling.  No dream conclusion to his career for Ricky Ponting as he failed yet again with all the SA bowlers contributing to the big win.
So SA go unbeaten throughout 2012 - and all away from home - fantastic effort and they'll take some beating on current form.
Not all doom and gloom for Australia - Clarke's form has been extraordinary and the bowling is coming on leaps and bounds. 10 tests against England next year will show exactly where they are.

anyways, great to see RSA win, Hashim and AB among the runs and the bowlers doing their job as always. RSA will be very difficult to beat, although I hope Pakistan do the impossible next year that too away from home!!! Cool

One change that I feel is necessary in the RSA line up is that of a regular wicketkeeper in place of Deal Elgar or whoever that 5th batsmen is. AB is way too overburdened by the job of wicket keeping, I'm surprised Kirsten is using him as a WK in the longer form.

Firstly, I'd like to congratulate the Proteas on a series win. To win a series in Austarlia is never easy and this series certainly was hard fought. In the end, it was South Africa who won the crucial moments.

Having said that, this tour also highlighted a few areas of concern. The main concern is the bowling which was pretty ordinary in the first two tests. I know the wickets were flat and Clarke and Hussey batted really well but this attack, particularly that of the pacemen is supposed to be the best in the world. In my view, the true test of how good a bowling attack is, is how they perform on batting friendly tracks. At the very least, they should be able to control the run rate, something which did not happen in Adelaide in particular. The only bowler who was consistent throughout the series was Morkel, although Steyn and Philander did bowl superbly at Perth. To say Tahir was terrible would be an understatement which was such a pity given that he was initially supposed to be South Africa's answer to an attacking spin bowler. Robbie P bowled well in his only test, but there is still some way to go.

The batting generally was good. du Plessis played one of the best match saving innings you will ever see, particularly from a debutatant. Amla continued his good form from England and de Villiers played a vital role in saving the test in Adelaide and the victory in Perth not forgetting his contribution as a wicket-keeper. The only concerns would be that of the number six position, with both Rudolph and Elgar hardly contributing, but with the return of Duminy the batting lineup looks strong.
