superb stuff, congratulations to South Africa on becoming the new No.1 test team in the world, they get to what they were destined for, how else can you explain a team with the top two batsmen in the world Hashim and AB, top two bowlers in the world Steyn and Morne, the best all rounder in the world Kallis, and perhaps the best captain in the world Smith, not be the No.1 team in the world!!!
Well done RSA, their date with destiny today! and this will be a long long stay at the top, can't see any team challenging them in near future, not even my beloved Pakistan, although I'd LOVE to see them take the fight to the proteas next year in their own den.

Congratulations South Africa, Congratulations Captain Smith and Coach Kristen and undoubtedly HASHIM AMLA as a batsman peak of SA team and major credit goes to the bowlers
South Africa have been the better team in every department and I was very impressed, more so than I thought I would be. They have given England an exemplary lesson in how to play Test cricket well. They will be hard to knock off their perch
After so many years hard work, finally the South African reached the top of the world. Really they are deserved for it. Well done South Africa, Keep it up.

England are hurt and will go all out to prove their detractors wrong, unfortunately for India, England have sufficient time to iron out the loopholes, work on form and sort other issues before they tour. As I have always maintained that ENG had played good in sub-continent and just that they could not end up on the winning side.Indians should be wary of their improved ability against spin, should not have even a hint of overconfidence about home conditions,Indians should put their heads down and go for the kill, otherwise ENG might well level the series or maybe even beat India.
On SA, they tour Australia this year end, One slip up and Aussies could well give a hard reality check and bring them to ground.Aussies may have some issues with the batting as of now, however Hilfy, Pattinson and Cummins can be a menacing attack. Moreover from SA's point of view, Tahir has been just an ordinay bowler (atleast so far) and if Brilliant Vernon Philander does not like the conditions down under ... they could well hand over the mace to Australia.

Looks like Andy Flower wants to find an excuse and is diverting the attention, I am damn sure if he was playing now he would sure line up to play IPL. I have no doubts about it.

"I find it very hard to blame any player for wanting to play in the IPL, because of the attractions," said the Zimbabwean, once officially the world's number one batsman. "Certainly if I was playing I'd want to play in it." Anyway he is coach and needs to give some excuse for the debacle and divert the media attention. So he is doing his best. I feel that he is sensing that his job at hand might be at stake. Few more such series loss could well be an end to his association with England coaching. I think as long as Team England stays united through to the end of the match, they are still in with a chance of pulling this off. KP the one truly great batsman England has had in the last 50+ years, is no factor

well a lot has happened over the last few days, RSA become the first team to hold the No.1 Ranking across all formats of cricket!!! Congratulations to this wonderful team!
![]() Hashim Amla scoring a 150, continuing his amazing run of form. Andrew Strauss announcing his retirement from professional cricket, very surprising decision that because I didn't expected it, ENG will have to deal with far too many changes in their team now, KP is gone, Strauss is gone, Freddie was long gone... I'm not too sure if they have youngsters who are good enough to fill in for these wonderful players.

Very surprising performance here by ENG, they beat RSA twice now and lead the ODI's 2-1.
I must say I was surprised, not that ENG aren't good or anything, they are a wonderful side, just that the ease with which they won against a very powerful South African side is something I was not at all expecting. Hoping for a 2-2 result though! Go RSA!!!

I think the record of SA being No 1 in all three format for a day or two now looks like a big joke. I guess ranking change make sense when the series is over. In Test matches I suppose they do not change mid series, then why it is calculated in this case. Anyway in my book, 1 or 2 day #1 in all three format is as good as it never happened. I am sure a deserving team will get that soon and stay there for atleast 6 months which I think could be SA,ENG or IND. If AUS can find a decent spinner and a new batting star, they could well be in contention.
For future, in tests it will be either SA,ENG and IND to get there and stay there for long long time. Many would laugh after ENG's and IND's recent records/debacles, but future does not depend on past, while I see lot of quality in these two teams despite recent poor records. India's new test line up needs some time, while they already show a great signs (Infact I had been telling right from WC2011, that RD and VVS should have retired , anyway its never too late), it's never easy to replace guys like RD and VVS at one shot , and they did it with a style. PAK have played well in recent times, but their approach maybe more to draw the series and attack with Ajmal. They lack quality batsman at test level in foreign pitches. They can manage in sub-continent, if they try to score quickly they will lose wicket, batting that slow won't win many matches. SL on the other hand is a two man force with Jaya and Sanga, Dilshan isn't consistent, their youngsters give some promise but they need two solid batsman. They have lost a magician in Murali and can't quite figure out their strategy.
Can't say anything about WI and NZ , god only knows when they play and what is their winning and losing pattern. Can't figure out why they lose, they all have good players. Coming back to ODI's, ENG's ODI performance, I have already posted about it.They have been great in this format and they truly deserve that spot for sure till Jan 11th as per rankings. |

As someone who's been watching England for the last 50 years I'll have to disagree! The early years of Geoffrey Boycott , the flamboyance of Ted Dexter , the grace of Colin Cowdrey , elegance of David Gower , power of Graham Gooch to name but 5 - they were all class acts against some of the world's ever greatest bowlers. In recent years quality bowlers are few and far between , especially quicks. Pietersen is an excellent player whose persistant squabbles with all and sundry reflects badly upon him. I, for one have had enough and won't lose any sleep if he doesn't play another international game in any format. |

It was strange watching England in England and I got to think maybe I was a jinx ! In fairness , SA outplayed England , expecially with the bat and 2-0 was a fair reflection of the series. More's the pity there wasn't 2 more tests , but I couldn't see England winning 2 to get parity and hold onto to the number 1 spot. Hashim Amla just gets better , he reminded me of Zaheer Abbass in his pomp - so much time and effortless boundary hitting all around the ground - probably the best batsman in world cricket today.
Gary Kirsten , with help from Allan Donald have achieved much in such a short time. The side has such self-belief and can hold onto top spot for some eyars to come - well done SA. The one dayers have been entertaining , but not as much as the last day of the final test! SA haven't batted that well , England have fielded like schoolboys and yet lead 2-1. It's be no surprise to me to see SA belt England tomorrow to level the series - I think their intensity fell away after such a great victory in that last test match. |

I think realistically, had there been 2 more Tests, England wouldn't have lost at Lords but settled for the draw quite comfortably |

First of all It's absolutely wonderful to have you back sledge!!! The forums were dead without you, I hope with the WT20 around we'll see some of our old posters back, don't know why Spinny and Mikey don't come online these days, two of our regular posters since years.
Just talking about RSA's ODI side, I think Like Pakistan they are also suffering from the lack of Big Hitters in their line up, these days they are way too much dependent on Hashim and AB, and Hashim isn't exactly a big hitter, so the pressure on AB is even more these days, lead the side, keep wickets, accelerate the scoring rate and don't get out! which is perhaps why he isn't firing more often. They would love to have Jacques Kallis back and also Love if Graeme Smith can regain his old form. Just one thing on ENG, and on the other thread Sledge spoke about the challenge they'll face in India, all I'd say is that in Finn they have got a bowler who is brilliant in all conditions, and Finn will be ENG's trump card this Indian winter, the more I see him bowl the more I'm impressed.

In my view SA are doing too much changing to their lineup. In my view they should just keep a fix batting order instead of left right thing and AB should bat at 3 no matter what the situation is.
Smith Amla AB Plessis Elgar Duminy Levi Petersen Steyn Morkel Tahir Wayne is really the worst under 19 player i have seen in long long time! |

There was an A team tour recently going on mystery and Parnell was unplayable on that tour, he was picking up wickets for fun, may be that is why they trust more in his abilities, he is a very fine batsman too.
I think once Kallis is back, RSA will find things much easir, he is two players in one that man Kallis!

Cook wants KP issue resolved soon, within weeks. A great sign and a true need from a man who will need to carry the burden captaincy.A great news, I simply love the way he bats, he is special.
I am being greedy here, I hope ECB takes time to solve the issue , while KP gets some rest till England tour or India is over, I definitely don't want to see KP in India against India

Hashim Amla, the man in my profile pic, has become the fastest batsmen to score 3000 runs in the history of ODI cricket, good 12 innings faster than Viv Richards.
I haven't seen Sir Don Bradman, but I have seen Hashim! 2-2 a drawn series then, and RSA close right in on ENG again for that No.1 spot.

RSA thrash ENG in the first T20, I must say ENG going into the WT20 without KP is a huge... huge set back for them, it is like not playing half of your side, what a disappointment for fans.
RSA not playing Hashim for the T20 was a complete surprise for me, I think he must play. ... and can anyone PLEASE tell me if there is some competition between Bopara and Rohit Sharma for "I can do worse than you" award... and why do ENG pick him in each and every game they play??? as I said in the case of Rohit also, sometimes, even if you think he is talented, it's good to just drop him so that he may come back stronger... like this he is going nowhere.

Sam like i have said before Nohit is totally useless you rest him or drop him nothing matters he is just a IPL player and Bopara too is very ordinary. Having talent is one thing but what makes a player really special is hard work just like Kohli.

Old Trafford today and England can't bat as badly as they did in the 1st match. It looks like the KP issue won't be resolved before they fly off to Sri Lanka on Thursday. No central contract either - we could well have seen the last of Pietersen in an England shirt.

True Sledge, the recent development where KP has asked to probe on the parody feeder and suspecting Jimmy and Swann, has for sure closed the door for a while. This could lead to a cascading effect of another player being penalized or reprimanded or even suspended, maybe time will heal this, and they all get back to playing together.
What has happened is unfortunate, which shouldn't have happened in first place, basically a man management and difference of opinion. Now as all the little episode unfolds, it does not look like it was only KP who was at fault. There are others who need a bit of stick. However I don't see any reason why all these players can't play together when things are sorted out and players have accepted and apologized for their mistakes.

My biggest concern with the KP fiasco is him bad talking his fello country players with those from another nation, that's absolutely sick, you don't deserve to be part of the same team. I can understand you playing for yorkshire and calling one your england buddy at Glamorgan and say hey, this guy don't deserve to play but to rat out your own country men?? Hell no, he deserves what he got!
Now, back to cricket, Hashim Amla is ah boss. All this man simply does is just times the ball effortlessly and keeps such a good strike rate.

I think the most disappointing aspect from last night's game was the form of the captain Stuart Broad, his pace is well down on what it once was and is clearly getting slower. He was, by a country mile, the most expensive bowler on show last night and has sadly become too predictable at all forms of the game. No one at Sky of course mentioned this, as usual. Clearly Broad has a problem somewhere and this will be detrement to the team, I feel moving forward to the world cup. For me, he's the weak link in this team. It was nice to see Luke Wright back in the squad with 'The England Essex coaches of Flower and Gouch' finally bringing down the axe on Bopara, a player not cut out for international cricket in my opinion. How many chances did he get? more than anyone over the last two years. Wright had one over and went for four runs and took a wicket, something Broad could never hope to achieve at this present moment in time. In fact when Broad took the ball for the final over I felt physically sick and knew he would go for plenty.

So England levelled the series in another rain affected match. Just 11 overs a side but some fearsome hitting by Buttler - 35 off just 10 balls! He took 32 off a single over bowled by Parnell , the 2nd highest ever in a T20 match. SA finished 29 runs back and were never really in the contest.
So they're flying to Sri Lanka today - modern day cricketers get very little down time ! |

Apparently Cook is keen to have KP back in the side, ENG have delayed announcing their squad for the WT20, which means it must have something to do with KP's inclusion.
On yesterday's game disappointed that RSA lost, but both ENG and NZL have shown surprising results in the last 3 days, meaning the WT20 is going to be close like hell!!! very difficult to call!
