Decent Pakistani ex-pat community in the UAE and they're playing in the 3 main cities - Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Makes sense to play in the UAE, but the crowds are disappointing. Tuesday is a working day in the UAE, so that probably explains the low turn out.

Great stuff from Junaid. It is heartening every time I see a young Pakistan fast bowler performing against all odds. Who needs the Aamirs and Asifs.

Good to see another left armer come in. Amir was the no,2 after Wasim, so hopefully Junaid can fill those shoes and do a good job. Pakistan need to make 300+, they've been gifted a great start to the test. SL making the same mistakes they did against OZ.

I actually liked the decision of Misbah to bowl first, I straightaway thought of it as a positive move, however I was very upset over Junaid playing ahead of Wahab, but now I'm delighted that Junaid has played ahead of Wahab!!!
Absoluetly delighted, overjoyed and what not with the first day's play, super stuff by the Green Machine, this is why I thought Pakistan will do well, it's their bowling and Sri Lanka, well it's all about Sanga and Mahela, they do not anyone else guys. Pakistan need to be focused though, should not get carried away, this is far from over, there won't be any threat of rain in the desert so they should look to score well, a good 1st innings lead is important and then need to bowl well again which won't be as easy.

The big mistake was to drop Samaraweera he deserve to be in the side just 1 bad match and he gets dropped really this wont take SL anywhere they must understand that they are not India or Australia they cant waste good players and expect to get a replacement. Junaid is very accurate which is a big plus for any young bowler even if he does not take wickets he atleast does not go for runs.

Sorry for the flippant responses to what were serious comments fellas - I'm just rather happy today as I'm likely to be a Grandfather within a few hours
![]() But back to the cricket ! I thought the pitch quite lively , going through nicely with a touch of green as well - well done to the curator ! That must be the liveliest pitch we've seen in that part of the world. Having said that , it has to be exploited and Junaid's lengths and pace were a treat to see - he's got talent! Pakistan need to dig in today , maybe a lead of just about a hundred might be enough to win this one. Or maybe the pitch will flatten out and still give us a draw ? I'm not familiar with pitch wearing in this part of the world , but seem to remember tons of runs interspersed with the odd wicket to keep the umpires awake! |

Will take that back any day Sledge!! Nothing delights me more than Pakistan performing in a test match against god oppositions.
On the match itself, the pitch was flat but it offered help whoever was ready to bend the back and hit the deck. A lead of 150 is what I am hoping for and I know our men are capable of achieving that. Hafeez is in the form of his life - Azhar Youus and Misbah form a formidable middle order and they can all bat long periods. The pitch will deteriorate on day 4 as it did the last time Pakistan played tests here - but it won't be anything like we see on day 4 and 5 in India or Sri Lanka.

Congrats Sledger - just make sure not to keep him/her around you when you swearing at England's performances.
Well done Pakistan but Sri Lanka has a tendency to end up drawing games like these. This pitch will be a belter to bat on tomorrow and I wouldn't put it past Sangakkara, Jayawardena and Dilshan to exploit it.

Congratulations Pete, wish you and your family the very best. Healthy, Wealthy and Wise!
Back to the cricket, Pakistan have ground out a 62 run lead after day 2 and that's not bad. They're batting very slow, but they were offered the right to bat slow when they got SL out for such a low score. The batsmen are playing within their limitations, you can't expect Umar and Ali to make their runs at 5 an over and keep their wickets intact - they are both limited batsmen and are playing within those limitations and that to me is better than them throwing their wickets away. Misbah and Younus are still to come in and both of them will be eager to make runs, the latter was in fine form in Zimbabwe. I'm not so sure about Shafiq or Akmal, haven't seen either of them bat before to be honest. Again, I must commend Junaid Khan on a wonderful first day bowling performance. He has neither the speed or shape of Aamir, who was just an absolute gem, but he's done a fine job. I suppose Wahab Riaz was not picked because they did not want to play 2 left armers. Australia has picked Johnson and Bollinger in the same side before and I didn't think it was a bad move at all. India have done the same with Nehra and Zaheer as well. Anyway, I think Ajmal may be able to do some magic on day 5 and gift Pakistan the win. |

Congrats Sledge!!!
Pakistan firmly in control of the situation, SLN just don't have the bowlers, a good lead here, hopefully bat the entire day and then have 2 days to bowl srilanka out (obviously in much less than 2 days), this should normally be a win from here on for Pakistan. Congratulations to Taufeeq Umer on his century, the current pakistani team has several "slow" players which actually puts them in very good shape for test matches, it is not often that you se just 1 wicket fall in the entire day, esp when 10 have fallen a day before, so I must say good job Pakistani batsmen!

Yes Sam it should be a easy win for Pakistan and good to see Umer finally doing well he was struggling before this match now he got his form back i hope he goes on to make 200 and just 1 wicket lost in entire day is a unique thing for Pakistan team hope they keep doing unique things in the future too

A little girl fellas !! Both are fine
but I do feel older already !!As for the cricket , Pakistan are really putting their foot on the throat and squeezing thelife out of this Sri Lankan outfit. It might be toothless bowling , but the clinical way they are batting has to be admired. Obviously they're looking to bat once and give themselves enough time to get through the Lankans again. The pitch looks a belter which goes some way to show just how well Junaid bowled - the lad has talent and will do serious damage to any side on a track with some help. |

There are no easy wins Mystery - Pakistan cannot afford to take the foot off the gas. They will have to keep the intensity up. Remember the pitch ain't cracking too soon - SRL do have the batting to bat it out - Pak needs to ensure they end the first innings on a high to take the momentum when they come out to bowl. It has been a while we won the first test of a series against any serious opposition.

Taufeeq has played a marathon innings - showing great powers of concentration for what has been, in all fairness, a pretty boring day of test cricket. Sri Lanka has virtually no way of winning this match and it's a matter of trying to salvage some pride and perhaps a draw. I'm guessing Pakistan will look to extend the lead to around 350 and give themselves 5 sessions to get the Lankans out. Misbah's stroke making, indicate he wants the score rate to tick a little bit faster. There's every chance Sanga or Jaya could make a 200 and save the game with such flat conditions. Although I highly doubt that and the Lankans look quite deflated and tired now.
Pakistan loves playing against Sri Lanka! They always seem to make big scores against them, I remember Younis snapping up 300 against them 2 years back. |

In fact all the 150 plus scores in the past three years have come against Sri Lanka. I think Misbah would want to have a crack in the final session today for 7-8 overs at least and walk away with a wicket in the bag. They lead by 240 by ea - they can add another quick 60 and put the Lankans in for a few overs.

wonderful knock by Taufeeq Umer, earlier I never rated him (perhaps blinded by the love for Salman Butt) but today I am so happy for him, well done Taufeeq, it is so nice to see a pakistani score a Double Hundred, after Yousuf went, I thought no one could may be except Younus but today it really was a pleasure to see that knock.
PAK have SLN one down, but that was a bit lucky, now it won't be easy but I would expect PAK to do better than SL with the ball and on day 4 and 5, hopefully the track will have something fpr Ajmal. come on Pakistan, desperately need a win!!!

Yes a awesome knock by Taufeeq Umer and now Pakistan should win this but as Zuhair said it wont be too easy by the way umpiring in this match was very ordinary this is why UDRS is a must.

For the Lankans to get out of this Sangakarra and Jayawardene will need big hundreds. Apparently it's stinking hot there today , so it's a real test of the stamina of the Pakistani attack. Still , they must be favourites to win this one and I'll be watching Junaid to see if he can get anything out of what looked yesterday , like a flat , flat deck.
