Today I got hit for plenty because of my pace, I was wondering how to stop the runs if your yorker isn't coming out right.

bad advice monty, If he bowls yorkers the batsman can't hit him for runs but If he does get it wrong then all batsman will say "thank you very much, lullipop". So Ali Malik try to get it right next time around.

Practice is the key. The more you do, the better you will become.

If your yorker isn't coming out right, and its just something like your having 'one of those days' then obviously you need to change your plan. Mix up your deliveries, slip in some slower balls, a faster ball, vary your length so the batsmen doesn't know where the ball is going. That should get you through if your having a bad day. And like the previous poster said, practice! If you don't practice it you cant expect it to work in games.
edit: You really answered your own question though, you said you were getting hit because of your pace, so the obvious thing to do is slow it down a bit, let the batsmen be forced into creating the pace of the ball himself. Edited by NZ_Fast - 30 September 2007 at 6:13am |

Nathan Bracken is a good example of this. Like the previous posters practice is the key. Put a hula-hoop, in the postion where you would like to bowl and try and to aim inside this area. If that doesn't work, work on your variations, cutters, slower balls etc.

i recon u should be using your pace agaist the batter. if your yorker isn't coming out right the the soloution is not to bowl it.
if you can bown a good and consistent line, vary your length, bowl slower balls and cutters the batsman will have no clue. also at your pace if you can swing it around you will be an extreemly difficult bowler to hit. you were probably getting hit because you were bowling fast but not in the right areas. work on your line, length, slower balls, cutters and try and get some swing youll have no end of wickets. |

If you're struggling with yorkers try bowling at a tin can at the base of the stumps. If it's not working in amatch then you'll need to mix up your pace and the length you bowl.

Don't slow down your pace!! If you can't land a ball in the area like Mcgrath, Pollock, Asif, Bracken etc, you definitely need pace. Practice at your full pace and you'll get better. Don't practice to get accuracy at a slow pace then try to bowl accurately at a fast pace - you'll just be wasting up training sessions!!

Since you say you are quick, you should use your pace as a weapon. Infact try to generate an extra yard of pace. A knee high full toss fired at great pace is very difficult to hit. Any mistimed hit can also give you a wicket. Also makes the batsman wary that you might bowl the next one down his throat (Lee on Tendulkar). Also mix your yorkers with bouncers. As a pace bowler, you should be the one dominating the batsman. Aggression is an essential trait for a quick. So next time, dont think of just stopping runs, think of stopping the batsman himself. Runs will stop automatically. |

Rahul49's got a point.
But if you are as quick as you claim, and your attempted yorkers are getting hit all around, then either you arent quick enough, or the batsman has a quick eye. In either case, read the batsman's shots. Most batsmen, especially sloggers, just pull, even if the ball is on a length or fuller. No point bowling a yorker at these kinds, if you arent getting it right. Vary your length and pace. Develop not one, but two types of slower balls. Keep them guessing. And practice your yorkers at nets, and dont use them in matches unless you are confident about it. I remember reading an Akram tip that the key to bowling a good yorker, is to aim for the bails. I never tried it, since i'm a spinner. Worth a shot though. Edited by Punch - 14 March 2008 at 4:12am |
