arms and chest - do push ups atleast 20 a day but have a rest day from it in the week.

abs - sit ups , jogging and a lot of sideways movement can help.

legs - jogging and squats also take a break as well from all and make sure to eat and drink fluids.

For more speed you probably just want to practice sprints, for longer spells just go for a long but steady run, I do a good few miles a day and my fittness is pretty good, as for why your arm would hurt throwing the ball to the boundary i'm not sure but I occasionally get that sort of pain if I bowl without warming up.

A cool and quick run up will make you gain speed! Also a fast arm action would help a lot too! Be warned though, that if you are a big fella, don't ever try to come into the crease quick or you would damage yourself. Ever wonder why Freddie don't run up very quick and don't make a big jump. Also, strengthening the arms would help.

Jogging as training should keep you going for longer spells. You also need strong thigh muscles so try doing squats!

When I use to go for trails with the national team, we use to warm down by playing hand football in simpler terms. You set up 2 small goals, and you use your arms to pass and score the ball. This is a team warm down but as a single person, just make a few light jogs around the park and stretch the muscles out after.

If you want to strengthen the forearms, then hammer-grip (neutral grip, not underhand) dumbell curls will help. Also grippers (get some from a bodybuilding or fitness supplier, not the weak girly ones in the shops) will do it, or you can get a weighted barbell across your knees and twist it up with an overhand grip, and also with an underhand grip let it roll down to your fingertips and then pull it back up.

All of these will work your forearms. Any gripping action will do it (forearm muscles will often give out before the muscles being worked when doing heavy rows or shrugs, for instance), and if you don't want to go down to the gym or buy any grippers, get a towel, roll it up and grab it with both hands and try to twist it as much as you can. That's all you really need if your forearms aren't getting enough excercise from the rest of your workout.

Well why not? You may as well take advantage of naturally high levels of testosterone and growth hormone while you've got them. The best time to get protein is as soon as possible after a workout, at least within the first hour. Before I started using protein powder shakes I used to eat a tin of tuna afterwards. I soon started to see the difference.

Well I would suggest that at 14 most people are developed enough to take up weight training, but if the gyms are no under 18s, either you shell out for some weights etc to train at home or find somewhere that does allow teens, if you wanted to lift. However, something like a pull-up bar that fits into a doorframe is a cheap and versatile way of working out the upper body and arms, which is a good, cheap alternative. Pull ups will help your grip strength and those forearms, too.

How do you mean, you can't do push ups properly? Is it a lack of upper body strength, or what? Just keep your body rigid and flex your elbows to lower and raise yourself. Your hands want to be a little wider than shoulder width apart.

between the ages of 14-19 is the best time to go to the gym, its when your body is developing, I used to play rugby and I spent alot of time in the gym during my teens and I have ended up with a really strong body for my size, could stand to loose a little weight mind but thats the effect of too much beer more then anything.

Dont think there is an age cap on working out, as long as you dont over-do it.

If your trying to bulk up then look at your diet as well, lots of fibre will help alot.

Yeah, if you want to bulk up, you have to eat. Exercise don't make you get bigger on it's own!!

Diet is crucial. To grow muscles you need a) a calorific surplus - you can't gain weight, fat or muscle, with less energy going into your body than you are using and b) muscles are made of protein, so get plenty of it into you. Meat, fish, milk, cheese, beans, nuts. Don't overdo it on the fat but you do need fats for healthy joints and I just read in Flex magazine that cholesterol is the precursor to testosterone. This is the reason that atheletes who have diets high in saturated fat put on a lot of muscle, through the anabolic effects of testosterone. You, as a teenager, should have high levels of testosterone and growth hormone in yout body anyway which should make it easy for you to bulk up with lean muscle if you excercise. And the best time to eat is as soon after a workout as possible, if you want to add muscle. Within the hour, and sooner if possible, get some protein and carbs down your neck.

Rest is another crucial factor. Your body takes time to recover and grow. You need to get enough sleep and also take days off. Work out an hour at a time no more than 3 days a week, I'd suggest. Serious bodybuilders and those that have been training a while can and do train more often but beginners often make the mistake of overtraining which will only run you down and even burn off muscle and weaken you, not help grow it.

Pushups, situps, tricep dips between a couple of chairs, these will all help your muscles grow and there's not a lot of point using weights if your upper body strength isn't enough to do about 10 pushups. Try doing them every other day until you can do at least ten pushups before you need to worry about the gym.

Resistance training will not stunt your growth or weaken your bones. There's an article about teenage bodybuilding in this month's Flex magazine, I think, if you were interested.

you might also try www.muscletalk.co.uk if you want tips and advice on routines, diets and anything else you might want to know about weight training.

thanks rambo your post was a great help! By the way i do eat
a lot! of protein i have 5 glases of milk a day and a banana milkshake as well but i still don't have that much bulk and am on the skinnier side. I guess its in my genes as both my mother and grandmother were both thin and my grandmother only but on weight when she neared her 50s! My mum only but on weight because of 'baby fat'
and is still a bit thin. I'm gonna have a look at that
website u mentioned.

cheers

Milk is pretty good to drink but there's only about 3.5g of protein per 100ml. So if you drink a liter of milk, that's still only 35g of protein. A bodybuilder will eat at least 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight per day. I used to drink the stuff by the pint when I was a kid, still do, but you need more than that to put some flesh on your bones.

Tinned tuna is a really good, cheap source of protein. You can buy a 185g tin of tuna in brine for 28p at the supermaket. That gives 30g of protein and virtually zero fat and carbs. I saw an increase in muscle size in my thighs and tricpes within a couple of weeks of starting to eat a tin right after every workout.

Glad I've helped, anyway.
