SAF and SL contest seems to be very intresting...SAF is in form (despite the loss to Aussies, where they put up a resonable fight). SL is red-hot and i am sure nobody want to face em right now. But here we go again...SAF reverse the curse!!!

I''m expeting a SA, Aus, SRL, NZL semi-final with a hopefully AUS-SA final if they don't play in the semi-final(would want SA winning by 1 run then). Want SA to win the cup as they were always my 2nd favourite team and almost favourites since India performed so badly.

Great pity that the weather seems to be playing a more important
role as this tournament progresses. What are the chances that the team
that finishes 5th will have been eliminated because they shared the
points with Ireland and maybe Bangladesh? The extra day for each
match is some comfort , but doesn't guarantee that matches will be
completed.
The Windies wouldn't be devastated if it rains all day in Antigua today , but the Aussies and their fans certainly would! Nice to see a big ground too - it plays into the hands of sides like the Aussies , they have so many batsmen who are quick between the wickets. Fine effort again by Hayden - he's in a rich vein of form , although Sarwan went from hero (Ponting run out) to zero after that missed catch on the boundary. It never fails to amaze me how what would be a waist high catch on the fence sails over the fielder's head because he's 10 yards infield! As mentioned by others in this thread , Samuels has a suspect action and really should have been reported. As far as I'm aware , that hasn't happened. 322 is more than competitive , to have a chance Gayle and Chanderpaul need to give them a century start at the very least and that still might not be enough. Lara is crucial , he must bat higher and take it to the world champions. Lastly , and I don't like harping on a about it , but just where are the fans?? When the hosts play the champs the ground should be packed to the rafters - it looks like a marketing mistake , the ticket prices just are out of reach for the average local , sad that. If the horrible weather persists today and tomorrow I think the South Africans will happily settle for a point - they are running scared of Murali - the local papers are panicking already! |

Should be a cracker of a game tonight if Chris Gayle and Chanderpaul fire at the top of the order and get the Windies off to a flying start, but then of course Australia winning in the end. xD

they did say in commentary that in terms of ticket sales the match was all but a sell out, though you are right about the large empty spaces. They did speculate that maybe people had bought seats but then took occupation on the grass bank instead. |

I can't believe the price of tickets, its an absolute nitemare that they don't have big crowds.
The cricket WC is meant to be the most prestigious of one-day cricket and the ICC make the prices of tickets out of reach for the average consumer...
What is WRONG with the ICC!!? Big crowds = atmosphere, more money in the long-run and entertainment for not only those watching at the ground but television viewers too.

I'm with you all the way Bondy , but when has sound commonsense
ever influenced the ICC? Today I read that the top man running
the WC says that the semis and final are sold out and he's happy with
the crowds so far.
I'm no marketing man , but I could've sold out the 2 semis and the final by standing on a quiet street corner here in Cape Town - not much savvy needed to do that! That he's happy with the attendances is disconcerting . In a cricket mad part of the world the masses are priced out of the showpiece , that's a disgrace. |

I'm majoring in marketing and the principle behind it is numbers. Not only is it disappointing from a fans perspective, but from a marketing perspective its ludicrous. Firstly, bringing people to the games at a lower price means that although there making less for each ticket they have consumers who will pay a premium for drinks, food, ect. I wonder how the people at the top get there sometimes. On another note. The loss of Vincent is HUGE for NZ. Not because Marshall will be playing (because he won't) if Taylor is, but because he was the key to our opening partnership. For once the pressure was off Fleming to score freely with Vincent ticking the score over at the other end. I feel sorry for the guy. Finally gets his opportunity to shine on the world stage and its shot down by Bond who ironically has had a horror run with injuries himself...as we all know! |

Spot on as usual Sledge!! SA and Ireland are in for the worst. Rain is always a threat in Guyana even in the heart of the Dry Season. It's always a great batting track over there......
Aussie will benefit a lot from the fact that they are in Antigue were conditions are very good for batting. All the teams now have an advantage over SA, SRI and Ireland.

Well, I know see a lot of persons questioning Samuels action. I remember some months back I clearly said it that he chucks big time. I am just surprised he hasn't been reported as yet. It's mainly all his balls and not his quicker ones.

Spin he probably has not been reported yet because he has not gotten that much wickets yet...LOL. I mean if he was making a great impact with the ball then you may have gotten the complaints....but what's the use of reporting an illegal action when it's not effective anyway...I mean since it's not affecting you why bother to waste your time and report something like that.... |

Yep 143 , the new rules are that he can only be reported after play has ended - what a cop out that is!
Anyway , SL win the toss and elect to bat on a dry looking pitch. No-one knows how this wicket is going to play , but even SA have drafted in Petersen , replacing Prince , so it looks like a great track for the Lankans! Expect 30 overs of spin from the Lankans fellas , they just have to be favourites . Smith and company must be hacked off - a grassless pitch and they've three games to play here! |

No surprise there really! Guyana is always a beauty to bat on! The short stuff from the proteas won't work on these surfaces!

Brand new stadium , brand new track SW - who knows how it'll play.
Tharanga gone for 12 and SL are 13-1 , caught by Kemp at 1st slip off Ntini. That'll give the South Africans a lift , all they need is Pollock to stop being carted to all parts of the Caribbean! |

There is a lad back here and he says all the track in Guyana plays the same. They are flat and grassless - makes you toil all day long. He was speaking from his experience with the Windward Island U-19 side so......
From what I heard, this one looks like a sub continent track.

West Indies are playing appaulingly, they are capable of doing a lot more than they are currently, it's a terrible batting performance, I've actually turned the TV off I'm so annoyed at their scoring rate. Sri Lanka look to have made a decent start against the South Africans and we could be in for a good game here.

Has Langeveldt come to the party or what? I am not sure if he is taking the pace off the ball now and then or if the pitch is just making the ball stop on the batsman a bit. Jayasuriya and Jayawardene both played their shots way too early. didn't read the pace of the ball.

I've worked it out that to qualify for the semi-finals England will need to win at least 4 of their 6 Super Eight games (including 2 against teams which have carried points forward) and hope that luck goes their way in the other matches.
It seems that the best way for England to qualify is by beating Bangladesh, Ireland, Sri Lanka and the West Indies (all of which are fairly achievable) and hope that the Sri Lankans and West Indians can only beat Bangladesh and Ireland and then win one of them wins the game they play each other in.
Then providing New Zealand, South Africa and Australia only take points off each other and all beat England, Sri Lanka, the West Indies, Bangladesh and Ireland then England hvae a chance of making it through, 3 wins in the Super Eight stage won't be enough unless Bangladesh and Ireland can both upset Sri Lanka or the West Indies.
If this does happen then it would leave the table like this:
Australia: 14 points
South Africa: 12/10 points
New Zealand 12/10 points
England: 8 points
Sri Lanka: 6/8 points
West Indies: 6/8 points
Bangladesh: 0/2 points
Ireland: 0/2 points
The only possible drawback could be net run rate, but West Indies current performance could help us if they beat Sri Lanka, but if Australia, South Africa and New Zealand play to their current form then it will be difficult to see them getting beaten by the next 3, this way would be our best hope, although it will be a bonus if England can beat South Africa as it would be taking points off them too.
But at the moment, this seems to be the best way of qualification.
For those who found my explanation very complicated then I've given the results to the possible way of England's qualification in all the matches involving England, Sri Lanka and the West Indies below:
Tue: Australia v West Indies March 27 Antigua - Australia
Wed: South Africa v Sri Lanka March 28 Guyana - South Africa Thu: West Indies v New Zealand March 29 Antigua - New Zealand Fri: England v Ireland March 30 Guyana - England Sun: West Indies v Sri Lanka April 1 Guyana - Either Wed: England v Sri Lanka April 4 Antigua - England Sun: Australia v England April 8 Antigua - Either Tue: West Indies v South Africa April 10 Grenada - South Africa Wed: Bangladesh v England April 11 Barbados - England Thu: New Zealand v Sri Lanka April 12 Grenada - New Zealand Mon: Australia v Sri Lanka April 16 Grenada - Australia
Tue: England v South Africa April 17 Barbados - Either Wed: Sri Lanka v Ireland April 18 Grenada - Sri Lanka Thu: Bangladesh v West Indies April 19 Barbados - West Indies Sat: England v West Indies April 21 Barbados - England |
