Hammond, you're really being severe on the Australia side. Australia winning in 2007 had nothing alone to do with Glenn McGrath. Nathan Bracken was probably more economical than him in that tournament. Brag Hogg was oustanding for Australia too in ODI's for the last few years he played. McGrath, Bracken, Hogg and Lee formed an excellent ODI bowling attack (although Tait filled in for Lee in the WC and has his success due to McGrath and especially Bracken stiffling the batsmen).
Also, don't forget what Hayden did in the WC against SA or what Gilly did in the finals. Sri Lanka was already the loser after that Gilchrist assault. As much as I didn't like it at that time, Australia was definitely the power house in Cricket.
Hayden, Gilchrist, Ponting, Clarke, Symonds, Hussey, Hogg, Lee, Bracken, McGrath - why would it surprise anyone that they won with this line up? Only another team with everyone in form would have consistently defeated this Australian team.

Australia are 83-4 after being put in by Strauss. All the top order failed against some impressive bowling by Shazhad and Tremlett. England seem to have taken their foot off the gas , Australia were 33-4 !! Tredwell's bowling now in partnership with Trott , the latter who can's even be classed as a part-timer ! Marsh , in for Mike Hussey is on 23 and White 30. These two are dangerous and are quite capable of taking Australia to a more than decent total.

Pretty good recovery that by Marsh and company. they have posted , so now they have some score to defend at least. Would be a good chase - wont be easy looking at the pitch.

Yes , fine effort by Marsh and Bollinger to get to 230. What's laughable and shows how disorganised the Aussie selectors are is Marsh doesn't make their world cup 15 ! The lad's always looked comfortable on the international stage and is the obvious replacement for Mike Hussey . if he doesn't recover. You can expect the Aussie press to give them hell in tomorrow's papers.

That "shot" by Smith was absolutely diabolical - for that "shot" he should be shot !

And he has played that shot often - even in test matches. He is just an over-hyped character. They would be better off playing the likes of Marsh or Ferguson instead because Smith hardly bowls - and when he does it is mostly crap.

I don't rate him either zuhair , it's alright being unorthodox if you're successful with it. To me Smith always looks like getting out and his legspin is ordinary at best.
Back to the game and it's interesting after Bollinger got Strauss and Pietersen in successive balls - Bolly is having a great game. Currently 70-3 with Bell and Trott steadying the ship. Edited by Sledger - 21 January 2011 at 8:58am |

This pair going well and with Morgan to follow I would say England hold the advantage at the moment. Clarke is not the smartest of captains, his field placings have been ordinary and this has allowed the pair to have easy runs.

No it is not. Aussies had a good game and they are anyways a much better one day side. Probably Collingwood will get the next game as they missed him today.

I told you AUS are regaining their lost form just at the right time.
Indeed leaving out Marsh and Fergusson for the WC is a mistake, I can bet on that. Hastings is in there for reasons I don't know ( I mean what has he done to earn a WC berth?) and Smith should not have been there either, he has done nothing of note so far.
This selection can cost them big time in the cup.

I stayed up and watch the whole of the Australian innings and it was a mix bag really. The pitch early up was a bit tacky so some seam movement was always going to happen now and again. Clarke deserve to be drop for getting out to such a poor delivery and an even poorer shot. Chris Tremlett was excellent and for me, he's been the man making the best use of those Australian pitch. He should have been in the world cup squad.
Shaun Marsh from the start looked in good form and the pitch, oh my, I loved it, the bounce was perfect for cross batted strokes. Shaun Marsh played both pace and spin superbly and Douggie was a bit of entertainment. Strauss probably could have called back Tremlett to try and finish him off but it wasn't to be.
When I went to sleep I thought England should win it easily because I thought the pitch eased up a lot so it is quite shocking that England lost.
Australia problem all summer is that their players have been out of form. With Watson and Marsh, you saw the difference, the team isn't short of quality (well, in Smith's case, yeah) but more so, short of form.

Aussies 3-0 up, Hmm so time for some prediction again. (Though I am not a fan of predicting ODI's, still let me try).
England to win 4 on a trot now!
Initially I worte England to win next three and decider I'm not sure , but when I make a wish , let me make compeletely in their favour.

England have been absolutely diabolical in these games, and from what I have seen they only really need to raise their performance to 'moderate' and they will be able to beat this very ordinary Aussie team.

Agreed, They are playing like a poor side, not like them at all. You would think there bowling would be more of a concern but its their batting and their mentality that is more of a concern in the series . I thought Trott played well but, but he could have and should have played a much, much bigger role, his innings should have been similar to Marsh in the second game in terms of Strike rate, and aggressiveness. Not to mention running out Strauss. Edited by abubakar52 - 23 January 2011 at 10:10pm |

I was actually at the ground and wondered why Anderson, Swann, Broad, Finn, Onions? even weren't playing.
I think the ECB couldn't given a rats arse about this series and are just giving the second and even third string bowlers a crack before the world cup, and giving the batsman a net.
Couldn't see anyone in england giving a toss even if they lose 7 zip. The WC is the important one, and this side is nothing like you will see come World Cup time.

I think the English are shot to pieces , just knackered. No Bresnan or Pietersen and the return of Collingwood didn't auger well before the start. Collingwood looks terrible and made Doherty look like Warne - I trembel at the thought of him batting on a dustbowl in India.
Anderson could be back for Wednesday , but it's the batting , not the bowling that's the problem. Brett Lee generated real pace and I was pleased for him , but I don't think India , SL or SA will be losing sleep over either of these sides at the moment. |

Hammond, Swann and Broad are probably injured, well, at least they said Swann had a knee injury and Broad probably is still recovering from the Ashes injury.

Broad was at the game running around- I heard Swann is fit and Anderson is on holiday. What does that say about the ECB priorities regarding this ODI series..

Anderson's on his way back and will be playing before this series ends - hopefully tomorrow! Hammond , although this series wasn't the priority when they arrived in Australia - it is now. No way did they go into this with a "we don't care attitude" - that's not the way this team approaches any series. They'll be going hell for leather tomorrow and just have to win to give themselves a lift. Remember , some of these guys weren't in the test side and they are desparate to turn this around.

Agreed Amal , neither side has performed solidly , it's 3-0 because England's batting has been terrible. The scoreline's right though , England deserve a fat zero !

His record as an opener is ordinary at best , tomorrow could be his last chance to secure the spot for the world cup. Then again , the pitches will be flatter in the subcontinent and he might blast it to all parts !

Broad has an abdominal strain, which won't stop him running about a bit, but certainly will stop him bowling just yet. Swann has been sent home which rather suggests he isn't fit - if they wanted to rest him I am quite sure they would just say they were resting him, much as they did with Anderson. I am sure all concerned would like to win this series, but all in all it really is a pretty inconsequential filler in between the 2 parts of the winter that do actually matter. |

fact of the matter is that AUS are still the best ODI side and they are proving that. I have been saying this since a long time and Brett Lee's performance just proves it, the old set of bowlers (Lee, Clark) should have been persisted with for some more time and may be the resutlts in test matches wouldn't have been as dissapointing. It really is great to have Brett Lee back and firing!
Clarke's form has been a huge worry and Ponting wasn't in the best of touch either, in the WC AUS will realy heavily on Watson and the Hussey brothers. Cameron White will be an interesting watch too, I do rate him very highly.
ENG are still not up to the mark in limited overs cricket, remember they narrowly won 3-2 against PAK too despite being far more superior in the test matches.
