No you're not the only one there - in fact I also think he is overrated as a captain too |

i am so tired of people calling ponting the best no. 3 in test cricket or for all cricket in that matter, he had one greeat run of series against SA and bang and after that people were calling him the best batsman of the era, well tendulkar and lara are the best batsman of the era and ponting is not in their league if one more person could join them it would be dravid who has one of the best careers and not be noticed for it, rite now i belive younis khan and sangakarra are in great form

Yup. But this year till now its Dravid.
1. He has got more votes. 2. He is the only batsman to have scroed 1000 runs this year. |

sehwag no.1 ponting's great form hasn't only been for 3 series, it's been for three years. As i said in my original post in this thread, he's averaged 66 batting at no.3, he cannot get those figures in only three series'

I've checked some stats and this is from january 2003 til now. Ponting average 71 and dravid average 70 but ponting had 16 not outs while dravid only had about 6. All in all , they are both exceptional. Ponting is better at scoring quicker but dravid is better at consistency. As simple as that. Dravid has every shot ponting has and vive versa.

not really, wait until the year is out and then count the runs, dravid has played more innings' than anyone else this calendar year thats why he has the most runs. |

Dravids career average is 58.75 while Punter's is 58.22 so there pretty even but that proves nothing you can't compare two of the greats in this modern era.Dravid is the only batsman this year to play 10 tests thats why he's leading run scorer here are some stats of both players. 2006 stats/batting Ricky Ponting 6 tests,11 innings,2 not out's,802 runs,a highest score of 143*,an average of 89.11,strike rate of 61.12,5 centuries and 2 fifties. So overall that's a great year he's having and his conversion rate from turning fifties into hundreds is simply mind boggling. Rahul Dravid 10 tests,18 innings,4 not out's,1046 runs,a highest score of 146,an average of 74.71,strike rate of 42.67,3 centuries and 7 fifties. Ricky Ponting still has 5 tests to play this year in a 5 match test series against England which I think all 5 tests are before the start of the New Year. While Dravid has 1 test series this year left against South Africa where he plays 2,3 or 4 I can't remember the fixtures. |

errrrrrrr no he doesn't! How often do you see Dravid launch a short ball over the midwicket fence or over square leg? The simple answer is , he doesn't because he's loathe to play the ball in the air. Both are class acts , but they bat in a totally different manner , which is the real beauty of the game of cricket. |

it would be interesting to see them bat together actually, i honestly don'tthink it would work. Ponting likes to get on with things a little more, and dravid doesn't turn the strike over as much, 1 of them would have to adapt a little, which is not exactly ideal.

Dravid might have played more games, but he made 1000 runs which very few bastman are capable of. Ponting still has the Ashes left. We'll se after that whose better.

No we won't! Irrespective of how successful Ponting is in The Ashes , determining who is the better player comes down to personal choice. All these "who's best" threads are purely subjective , we all have our favourites. |

Just one correction before I go further. Ponting had 12 not out while dravid had 9. Sorry about the wrong figures clapo. Anyway , the answer to yout question is ponting 17 centuries since that time and dravid 9. Potning average in 2002 was 45 odd and had 3,505 runs I think. Anyways , their record now is that dravid played 104 match while ponting played 105. Mean while , dravid have 1 more innings (176)than punter (175) and dravid have 257 more runs that ponting overall. Punter overall have 24 not outs while dravid have 22 and dravid average is 58.76 and punter own is 58.23 I think but I know its 58 Point something in the 20's. So when you compare there isn't much difference other than the fact that dravid stats in terms of average is better. |
