Topic: The Grand Cricket QuizPosted: 22 April 2007 at 6:20pm |

I've been doing some reading lately and I've found some astonishing facts in cricket history. So, I thought why not put the cricket minds on this forum to the test and see how many of you guys know your cricket. I must say I had no idea about some of the stuff that I read but if you think you are up to it then sign up here and we'll see how it goes.
Rules:
1. You have 24 hours to post the answer to the question. Post ONLY the answer. No reasons required as this may influence the answer of the people who post after you.
2. You may work in groups of two if you wish because some of these questions will be very difficult (they are to me atleast). Please put in the names of the two members working as a team when you signup in a single post. Any communication between team members must be made via PM and NOT on this thread.
3. The questions will be of different types. Some will be straight Q&A, some based on a 'Who am I?' format etc.
4. Each person (or team) that answers correctly first will be awarded 2 points and every other correct answer will receive 1 point.
Please sign up. If nothing else, it will be a good lesson in cricket history. I can start posting questions as soon as I have atleast 5 people signed up.
Points Table
slogger72n/o ----- 2 pts
ramzi -------------- 2 pts
70DS -------------- 0 pts
PietersenFan ------ 0 pts
MP12 -------------- 1 pts
joelza1990 -------- 0 pts
tonks007 ---------- 0 pts
Freddie ------------ 2 pts
W.G. --------------- 3 pts
Bennos ------------ 0 pts
EDIT:
SECOND GUESSES WILL CARRY HALF THE POINTS.
For example, if A guesses incorrectly, then B guesses incorrectly, then A second guesses correctly followed by B second guessing correctly. A will get 1 point and B will get 0.5 pts. I hope this is clear. YOU WILL BE ALLOWED A MAXIMUM OF TWO GUESSES.
Also, please use common sense. I am no cricket historian. I have a couple of sources from which I get my facts and can quote them to support my answers (if required). I have tried to keep my sources up to date (until 2006) but if certain records etc. have been set in this current year which falsifies my answer, then I apologize and the necessary adjustments will be made.
'WHO AM I?' RULES
1. A total of three clues will be provided one hour apart.
2. A correct answer:
after 1 clue - 6 points
after 2 clues - 4 points
after 3 clues - 2 points
3. The maximum of two guesses per person and second guesses carrying half the points rule still applies. Edited by scuudz - 25 April 2007 at 11:51pm |

Alright!!! So lets get started with an easy one (compared to some of the others I have in store)
Q. Who holds the record for the highest batting average in a Test series and what was the average?

I believe this record could, oddly, belong to a bowler - if memory serves me well Jason Gillespie averaged 231 in the 2006 two match series against Bangladesh largely due to his 201* scored as a night-watchman.

Apologies Scuudz but I forgot the rule about no explanation, I should have just gone with Gillespie and let everyone laugh at me, ehh?
Note to self: Just post answer in future, however daft it seems..... |

This one tricked me a little because I was fooled into thinking that it happened a long time ago because it is a history quiz. I'd say Jason Gillespie average 231

I was going to address this when I posted the answer.
Please do NOT edit your answers. You may have another go at it in another post and ask me to neglect your previous answer but do NOT edit earlier posts as I may not go back and look at all the posts again. This means I may miss your edited post.
Also, W.G. apology accepted for the reason-giving. Dont worry I will be giving a brief account of what happened when I post the answer so everyone knows what happened, when and how it happened.
You have approx. 2 hours until I post the answer.

Can I second guess on Wally Hammond's 563 as well, don't think anyone could beat that.

Hundreds of batsmen who have achieved an average of infinitely by not being out at all in a test series, of course Infinity is higher than any possible number, so technically that has to be the highest.
Otherwise my other guess will be Wally Hammond with 563.

Sorry Freddie - if you are not out your average is undefined, not infinity. Many people think dividing by 0 gives infinity, but this is not the case.

Alright folks!! That was an interesting first round with some good thoughtful answers but there was always just one correct answer to this question.
In 1932/33, Douglas Jardine took his England side down to NZ for a two match series which ended in a 0-0 draw.
Wally Hammond was at the top of his game and batted twice during the whole series (and so did England). He scored 227 in the first test and 336 not out in the second. 336 was the highest test score at the time. Therefore, his average for the series was astonishingly 563 which is still the world record.
ANSWER: WALLY HAMMOND - 563

Scuudz - in fairness to all you should score this first round in keeping with the original brief, with the revised 2nd guess rule coming in to play from this point forward - not our fault the rule was introduced after the round closed.

Fair enough. Doesnt make a big difference though because instead of getting 2 and 1 u get 1 and 0.5. No worries....I'll change it.
