Former India captain Rahul Dravid hit a dazzling century but East Zone still defeated South by 23 runs in a Deodhar Trophy match here on Friday.

Electing to bat, East Zone posted a challenging 274 for five in 50 overs. In reply, South Zone were dismissed for 251 in 48.3 overs.

Dravid was the lone bright spot for South Zone in their defeat as the middle-order batsman, who came to the crease after the fall of opener Dinesh Karthik (3), slammed 139 runs off 138 balls with 13 boundaries and a six.

Dravid and Arjun Yadav (42) held the innings together for some time with a 83-run partnership after South Zone had struggled to 89 for three.

Yadav’s dismissal proved too costly as rest of the South Zone batsmen fell cheaply to leave Dravid stranded.

The other blow for South Zone was V.V.S. Laxman’s injury which prevented him from taking to the field during batting. Laxman was injured while fielding.

For East Zone, paceman Dhiraj Goswami was the pick of the bowlers, bagging three for 42 while Ranadeb Bose chipped in with two wickets.

Earlier, captain Laxmi Ratan Shukla’s (73) scintillating half-century powered East Zone past the 270 mark.

Shukla hit five sixes in his 66-ball knock and stitched a 101-run partnership with Saurabh Tiwary (73) for the fifth wicket.

Prasanta Saha contributed 21 runs lower down the order and helped build an unbeaten 58-run sixth-wicket partnership with his captain.

R. Vinay Kumar was the most successful bowler for South Zone, claiming three wickets.

Uthappa is not from Bangalore Dips :-). He is from a place called Coorg. But he is from the same state Karnataka for which Dravid and Kumble plays.

Uthappa is from Bangalore which has produced modern greats like Kumble and Dravid. He's still young and raw and needs to work on his temperment and technique. He cant come down and hit straight over the bowlers head every time. He has got promise and needs to deliver.

I'll say this, Uthappa won't succeed as an opener. He is too aggressive for that and looks quite last if the delivery is fast and short. He'll be more suited to late in the order in ODI's but in 2020, you can have him anywhere.

Chawla is certianly a young man going places, i just hope he is given time to devalop and mature though, and isn't thrust out into the international scene on a permanent basis too early.

I feel for Yousuf Pathan, 400+ runs in the Ranji and 28 wickets this season but he was still not selected while mediocre performances from Uthappa and Sharma saw them get selected. I really dont understand the policies of the selectors. They are just so disgusting. We need proper selectors, Vengsarkar & Co. started well but now they seem to be no different than what Kiran More & Co. did.

Yousuf Pathan might be another bright chance. I just hope he is not another Afridi. Strike rate of 120 this season in first class is very high. He has actually very similar strike rate with 79 overall in first class, 112 in List A, and 194 in 2020. He is having a good season too. Kaif and Raina are batting really well too.
Powar has not been much succesful with the ball but he has just scored a century with the bat.

Pulling up an old thread but didn't want to put these things in India-Pak thread.
Gambhir is making a very strong intent on getting in place of Karthik. He has been played well making 2 centuries and a fifty in 2 matches including one century following on. Sehwag is certainly not coming into the team for a while scoring just 57 runs in 4 innings.

India have been going a lot of players who are too young. There's many better players than Ishant Sharma who never get to play because they aren't as young. That's a bad thing. Older players are definitely better with more experience. This is what Pak are enjoying now with Misbah constantly saving them.

So a quickfire centry from Tendulkar did it .Bose couldn't strike any blows after the first two .He has however completed 50 wickets this Ranji season from 8 Matches at an average of 15 or 16 .

OK so the Ranji finals are coming up in  the gap between the end of the West Indies and the starting of the SRl tour .The two teams are Bengal and Mumbai .All big guns including Ganguly(bengal) and Sachin ,Agarkar ,Zaheer  and Powar(Mumbai) are going to play .Mumbai may feel they have the advantage but Bengal's Ranadeb Bose(45 wickets from 7 Ranji matches) and Manoj Tewari ,Abishek Jhunjhunwala and Ganguly are in devastating form .

I agree. I said that many peopel ahve said that after God, Ganguly is the best off-side player. I said that I didn't think that he was that great at it and started exagerating by saying that they are completely disgusting. That's all.

I agree with you completely. I think India need to search hard to find a captain like him. He did very well as a captain and gave the team a lot of confidence. Dravid is a good captain, but i think he needs to work harder to get to the standards of Ganguly's captaincy. Like you say, "What Ganguly has done for India, no other Indian can do..."

look mates whatever you say for or against ganguly there are somethings i want to say .first there will not be another asian captain as aggressive as he was and secondly no other captain and player in india can do what ganguly has done for the team .i dont know whether you all agree with me or not but i am 100 percent sure .
