'Stump The Guru' now has a new home. Sadly, it has fallen into disuse and so is to be archived.

Read 100 pages if you really want to know why this thread is huge.

Thanks Sledge my mind at ease now. Earl of Twirl, that was the skipper on the side I represent that could have made it easier not the oppo. Which made it worse!

I was having a pint with an old SA test umpire , Syd MIllar , on
Friday Foz and I put your poser to him. He says the batsman
could be at the boundary rope and the umpire can still deem him not
out. If the umpires are in consultation and don't see the batsman
leave the crease and they inform the fielding captain that it was a
bump ball , the guy would just have to walk all the way back to the
centre again!
Old Syd stood in plenty of 1st class matches both in SA and England and knows his stuff mate!

Fozzy,
I'd say that you handled it as well as possible. The young lad obviously made things more awkward for you by beginning to go, but the umpire is there for a reason and you stuck to you guns. Well done and have a gold star!!
Shame the opposition skipper didn't speak up sooner if he thought it wasn't out!!

this actually happened in a game I umpired.
I was standing at the bowlers end when a young bat hit the ball back to the bowler who caught it. The team appealed, my first instinct was that it was a bump ball and I went to confirm this by going to talk to square leg umpire, in the meantime the bowler got the hump that the young lad didn't walk and gave him some grief. This made the young lad start to walk and he got to the edge of the square but the other bat called him back becuase I had not given a decision yet. heated discussion ensued! The other Umpire also thought it was bump ball so when I returned I spoke to the bowler and told him Both Umpires thought it was not out. He then claimed that the lad had given himself out by walking. ( I was unsure on this point as to what stage he would have given himself out as he had barely reached the edge of the square)
I resolved this by talking to the fielding captain and explaining that I and the other Umpire thought the bat was not out, however he had walked but I thought that was becuase of the pressure put on him by the bowler and not becuase he was out - in that case would the skipper be happy for him to carry on batting. He was fine with that and the game resumed, (later the skipper told me he din't think he was out either!)
My question is - When is a batsman deemed to have given himself out
and secondly Did I handle the situation correctly?
What made this worse for me was that I was the bowling sides Umpire in this 3rd X1 league match! The lads didn't hold a grudge though.

Is it going to move into the Fun & Games Section. I'll start and not waste much time. We can't afford to delay this thread anymore. Sorry Slogger.
I'll start of with an easy one: How many runs and centuries has Mohammed Yousuf made this year?
You can get the asnwers on this forum itself.

That sounds like a good idea, start again, someone posts a question and then everyone has to try and answer it
I'll start if you want.

This thread is dead guys, might as well let the MODs lock it, it's got boring.
At the very least it should lose its place at the top of the board.

It's not the first to die, what about all of the locked threads littering the forums.

No its not, it will start again later on. Leave it alone, this thread was dead, but then some people started posting so it kept going from 90.
Don't worry about it, somebody will come up with good stuff.

I think we must just leave it alone. Some newcomer will see and come up with an idea. All the sticky threads like this, World Cup 2007 and all were made my member who have now forgotten about this forum and were new.
